Concept/DemonstrationAnother Gladiator Hint

UAW hints that it wants to built the Gladiator in Toledo. Plus, exporting Jeeps from China?

WTOL TV out of Toledo, Ohio recently reported that other auto manufacturers may start looking at Toledo for potential new assembly plants. The reason for this is mainly due to DaimlerChrysler's innovative plan of enticing thier suppliers to build factories near the Toledo assembly plants for the Jeep brand.

The Gladiator tid-bit shows up near the end of the article:

The UAW Local 12 also wants to build a new Jeep pickup truck here in Toledo. DaimlerChrysler is reportedly looking for options to start production in 2008.

Check it out.

Exporting Jeeps From China?

Bloomberg.com is reporting that DaimlerChysler is strongly considering building vehicles in China for the export market due to the reeeaaalllly low labor costs in China (about 1/18 of their American counterparts). Will a future Jeep be built and exported from China? Not yet - it sounds like the first vehicle will be a Chrysler nameplate. Here's a snippet:

DaimlerChrysler AG, the first overseas company to make vehicles in China, plans to build Chrysler compact cars in the country to export to the U.S., taking advantage of wages one-18th those of U.S. workers.

DaimlerChrysler, the world's fifth-largest vehicle maker, is in talks with Fujian Motor Industry Group to form the venture in southeastern China, said officials from the two companies. The entry-level Chrysler model has not yet been developed, said DaimlerChrysler's China chief Ruediger Grube.

The carmaker is following Honda Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. in producing vehicles in China for export, as sales growth in the world's third-largest vehicle market slowed. Honda, Japan's third-largest carmaker, exports Fit compact cars from southern China while GM said it would make Chevrolet Aveo compact cars in Shanghai for overseas markets.

Here's the entire article.

i think that if jeeps were built in china that could be a bad thing. all car companies that wish to work in china have to enter in an agreement with the Chinese govt. and establish a joint venture. in this joint venture each party owns the technology. this means that all tech brought to the table by chryaler would also be owned by the chinese. the chinese could take this tech and use it in other joint ventures which means that any other car company could rightly use tech developed by jeep and chrysler. or the chinese govt. could combine all these technologies and sell these vehicles themselves under brands like Cherry and could hurt car sales over here and other parts of the world. this is why all of the jeeps built in china are old designs with older tech-so the chinese cannot get thier hands on the cutting edge stuff.

i know that the Partnership has been going on since the '80s.however thse jeeps produced are not cutting edge or not as cutting edge when compared with the new models. if any vehicle is to be sold in the us it is usually cutting edge and western companies do not want to use that new tech in china because they would be giving that tech away.

I have a pertinent question to add to this serious political discussion. If the Gladiator is made in China, would it be called the Gradiator? It better be built here, one of several reasons I own Jeep is that they are for the most part "American made". In a world of choices, I still have US vehicles in my garage. Now does anyone else have info on a hybrid Commander?

yes, i know, Castro could invade Miami any time and we got to get out shotgun ready.
But
the chinese communism? don't make me laugh. call it "dot communism"-their econ. policies now are more capitalistic than the U.S in the late 1800s which explains the poor worker's condition.
chinese gov do not own ALL the companies.
Not ALL the money goes to the chinese gov. otherwise no one will be investing in china
But
we all need enemies and I guess china is a convenient candidate
read 1984 and find yourself there

listen neuron and other like minded people, if you want to buy cheap cars and other goods from China all of that money does not go to the workers it goes directly to the Chinese government. the Chinese government owns all of the companies in China. the own 50% of all of the joint ventures with western companies. China is giving us problems now but they will be a bigger problem for us in the future. I would by a cheap car from any other country (if i had to) as long as the company was not owned by or located in an UN-FRIENDLY COUNTRY. as far as i am concerned China is an unfriendly country because it is communist.

i try and by coods made in the USA and other FREE nations NOT IN CHINA.

Hey 96 XJ Owner,

I mention S. Korea in my rant about unfair trade because of the way they offer their citizens tax incentives to buy Korean made products and not US imports. If the US were to offer its citizens tax incentives to buy our own products the S. Koreans would scream that "it is unfair trade practices". But it is ok when they do it.

Free trade means level playing fields. With Chine and S. Korea the fields are way off level. We as consumers can help by avoiding their products.

As an avid Jeep fan and a UAW member I will never buy a vrhicle made over seas. If they start making Jeeps over seas I will stop buying them. Jeeps won WWII and are all American. If it is made over seas it would be a sin and a slap in the face to everyone that died fighting in WWII. My grandfather would turn over in his grave, he use to tell me how a Jeep save his life in WWII.

On the topic of South Korean cars, Hyundai is in the process opening a large manufacturing plant here in the US. Most of the Hyundais for sale in N. America will be built here in the US.

Apparently the cost of production is lower here in the US, and their workers in S. Korea are constantly on strike.

I also dislike our relationship with china. i try and buy goods made in the us.and if i cannot find any i try and buy gods made in other "friendly" countries. also i would not bash the Koreans. all of the cars that are "made in Korea" are from South Korea not north Korea.the south Koreans hate the North Koreans and Chinese more than we do. they will also be our allies if s**t hits the fan (war with china and or N.Korea) so buying things from S.Korea is not the same as China. S.Korea is a free nation because of us and because of that they are our allies.

Personally, I'm sick of the abusive trade relationship between China and the US. I'm sick of seeing poorly made Chinese products flooding these shores. Additinally, the Chinese do not operate on a fair and equal trade system with their trading partners, they simply peg their currency's exchange rate at a set percentage based on the US dollar which is not fair. It should float freely within the world exchange and be permitted to fluxuate like everyone else's. However the US in their crazy quest to be politically easy does not push the issue as much as they should and this has gone on for years. Since our sad government is too afraid to make a stand I've decided that I personally won't buy Chinese (or Korean for that matter) products. I think it is up to US consumers to make a concerted effort to not support these abusive trading partners.

The Chinese:
* Don't trade fairly
* Allow workers to be drastically underpaid
* Will work children at slave wages
* Don't offer good quality products and only so-so engineering.
* Don't have to operate their businesses under the same environmental rules as we do (which costs US business a lot and is passed on to buyers)

HEY DCX, screw you if you think we would really consider a Chinese produced Jeep product! Or Chrysler name for that matter.

I too will buy a US built Toyota, Nissan or Mazda before I buy any Chinese (or Korean) built vehicle.

Oh, and DCX build the Gladiator (with 4-cyl diesel option) here in the US and I will buy one.

Before everyone starts panicing, there are no plans to produce a Jeep in China for US sale.

Doing so would require Jeep to add yet another vehicle to the lineup (one outside of what we currently know about).

The day DCX imports it's first vehicle from the People Republic of China is the last day I'll ever consider buying one of their products.

I'll buy a made in Tennessee Nissan, or a made in California Toyota before I'll buy a vehicle made by slaves in China.

Unfair trade? how much subsidies is US gov. giving to the farmers to keep the import down and therefor contributing to the poverty of central, south american, and african countries.

toyota build cars here because we have plenty of UAW workers. we cant seem to produce enough computer engineers, but u.s. has plenty of assembly line workers. it's globalization and it's here to stay. if china does not produce low end cars, they will be produced in brazil, mexico and russia. if ten years from now we are still worried about protecting UAW assembly line works, us will becomes a 2nd rate country.
so your gf was in WWII? therefore you have no problem buy jeep owned by the Germans or cars by the japanese but danmed if those chinese makes them? Does it make sense?
