Chrysler LLC announced yesterday an offer that gives people who purchase or lease a new Chrysler vehicle a special charge card that only charges the customer $2.99 per gallon of gas - Chrysler will pick up the rest of the tab.
From CNN: Chrysler also announced an offer that caps the price of gasoline at $2.99 a gallon for three years for people who buy or lease new vehicles from Wednesday through June 2. The offer is based on 12,000 miles of driving per year at the vehicle's rated fuel economy.
Customers will get a card for buying gas that is linked to their own charge account, Chrysler said. The customer will be billed $2.99 a gallon, and Chrysler will pay the rest.
Actual savings depend on what happens to gas prices over the next three years, but based on the $3.61 a gallon average price reported Monday by AAA, someone buying a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, which gets an estimated 21 miles per gallon in city driving, would save $355 a year.

I almost wrote the check for that new (stripped) 6spd Jeep Green Liberty! With that added to my OEM Supplier "Affiliate" discount & Rebates, that would have been a sweet deal... like only ~$17K!  So, last month, in my region, there was a total of $2000 Rebates on the Liberty. Now, I have the option of a Gas Card, based on the Liberty's est.18mpg X 2000gallons = 36,000mi (i.e., 12Kmi/yr). So 2000 gallons, at an est. $0.70/gal savings = $1400 saved over 3 years. Big deal...  But wait! the new Rebate(s) for the Liberty for May have been dropped to $1500. So it's a possible $1400 over 3yrs vs. $1500 now. I would have been better off buying last month. Maybe the numbers work out better for some other models (Compass/Patriot...)  NICE BAIT & SWITCH, CHRYSLER! So, I guess they're trading their Auto Show Grand Entrance gimmicks for Rebate gimmicks. Well, I guess that employee did have to find a new job...  |

Being a for-profit company doesn't excuse behavior in which they are clearly trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the uninformed masses. There are those of us out here that won't fall for this kind of garbage marketing, but Chrysler knows too well that there are far more people that will think this is a good deal and don't know how to do the proper research to discover it's a scam. So Chrysler is targeting these people, preying on them. It's cheap and it's dirty. So for those of us that see it for what it is, yeah we have the right to call it out.
I, and I'm sure MarkH (whom I've argued with before on other points), have no problem with companies making money selling their products. I like making money, too. It's the dishonesty, smoke, and mirrors that pisses me off.

You are making what might be the 2nd biggest purchase of your life, yet you can't do some simple math and/or research to find out what DISCOUNT is a better deal FOR YOU.
It's not difficult. And Chrysler doesnt HAVE to give you everything you want.
I personally am getting tired of people wanting everything for nothing.

I'm arguing for all of the less-informed, those that don't know how to research, those that will go from dealership to dealership to do their "research." They think they're getting a great deal because the salesmen tell them so, but they're being swindled. See, you and I are already on a higher echelon because we visit sites such as this one. But we are a very, very tiny minority of the car buying public. We're far ahead of the curve.
It may not be difficult for you and I to do some "simple math" and research, but for many people it is because math, especially finances, is complicated and they have no idea where to begin. So they start at the dealership and "learn" from the salesmen. You and I know that's a huge mistake, but to many people that's where you go for your information. And Chrysler is preying on that with a slimy "offer" such as this gas card thing.

But do you think I'm going to jump through hoops and link my credit card to some Chrysler account to take advantage of this? Hell no. If you want to offer me a discount, just drop the price of the car. I ain't falling for this. It reminds me of those stupid "get 15% in free furniture when you purchase some other overpriced crap from us." Why not just give me 0% free furniture, but give it to me for 12% less? Because you think I'm a dolt, that's why. Apparently Chrysler thinks we're all stupid, too.

Some people who may be on the fence about buying a gas guzzler may use this as a deciding factor in there purchase. I have seen lines of cars at a gas station that has gas at about 3 cents cheaper than the station 100 feet before it. Why? To save 1 dollar they will stay on line for 30 minutes. Makes no sense, but people do it.

I will have to look into this. It's actually a good idea I think. It also makes me think that Chrysler thinks that the peak in gas prices is somewhere near that amount. Which is also a good thing.

The discount is only good towards the fuel specified for the vehicle you purchase, and there are some limitations on how much fuel you can purchase based on 12,000 miles/year driving and the EPA fuel economy rating of the vehicle purchased.

Program Description
The Let's Refuel America gas card program works when a customer purchases a new and unused Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle and selects the program in lieu of other available incentives. The customer is provided with the registration process documentation and registers providing their required personal information via the dedicated web site or toll-free 800 number. Once registered, the customer receives their gas card and separately, their Personal Identification Number (PIN) within 4 to 6 weeks of application. The customer then swipes their Let's Refuel America Gas Card at an eligible gas station, selecting up to 87 octane regular, E85 fuel or diesel fuel, and enters their PIN to begin the fueling process. After the fuel transaction occurs, the customer's personal credit card (identified in the registration process) is charged $2.99 per gallon.
