Grand CherokeeGrand Cherokee Car Wash Incident - Again.
Posted by mike on 2006/6/21 5:19:00 (1471) reads

Back in March of this year, we posted this article about sudden acceleration in Grand Cherokees.

The issue surfaced again this week with another incident in Ohio, when a car wash employee was injured when a Grand Cherokee suddenly went forward in a car wash.

The article goes on to describe how the Jeep traveled 75 feet before it was brought under control. The most telling quote from the article is this:

Hiltman said her employee, while shaken up by the incident, has returned to work. "We're not doing any more Jeeps,'' she said. "And our new policy is for every vehicle to be put into 'park' before it gets turned on."

So, it wasn't their policy to put every vehicle in park before turning it on? Hmmm...

Have you ever noticed that this only happens at car washes? What do they do at car washes but take the floor mats out, and put them back. What is going on is they are putting the driver's floor mat over the gas pedal when they put the mat back. So they think it's a runaway Jeep, but it's a floor mat pressing the gas pedal down. If that car wash decides to not wash Jeeps, they are going to be cutting their own throats. The solution is to make their employees aware of the problem so they won't make that mistake. The Jeeps have a much larger hump in the front for the 4WD system. There is not much room for error in installing the mats. The solution is so simple, and so obvious.

I'm pretty sure most vehicles with automatics won't allow you to start the vehicle with the transmission in gear -- it has to either be in Park or Neutral. On many new vehicles you also have to put your foot on the brake to even shift out of park.

I simply think it's an issue of these stupid people not figuring out the difference btwn the gas pedal and the brake pedal, that or their feet are slipping off the brake and hitting the gas and they can't figure it out.

If you've got your foot on the brake, and you shift into drive, a vehicle isn't going to just suddenly take off, and it's sure not going to go 75 feet before you get it "under control".

Here is a line of thought.
What is unique to the Grand Cherokee among the Jeep line-up? Quadra-Drive
Think about the scenario - a car wash can be the slipperiest of places due to the soap.
Now think about how the Gerodisc system works. It builds up hydraulic pressure before engaging the other wheel.
Car wash operators are in the business of moving cars through the line in a time-efficient manner. They hop in, put it in gear, press the accelerator for a few seconds (while the loose wheel is slipping away and building pressure) finally the Gerodisc engages and viola' - We Have Lift-Off!

If the car wash operators are reporting 40% of Grand Cherokees are having this problem...I wonder how many GCs have Quadra-Drive?

I have an '03 GC without Quadra Drive, in the 40+/- times I've driven it through the car-wash I've never had this happen.
Since I haven't used Quadra-Drive I wonder if anyone else could shed some light on it's operating charachteristics?
I bet if they put it in 4 wheel Lock it wouldn't do this.

That's a really good observation. I don't own a Jeep with Quadra-Drive so I can't talk from experience, but the Gerodisc idea makes sense to me.
