Perhaps giving it the Startech treatment will help turn people's opinions about the Compass...

From theCarFanatic.com...

The STARTECH SD3 performance kit for the diesel model consists of an auxiliary module that modifies the engine electronics. With it maximum power output of grows from stock 140 hp / 103 kW to 180 hp / 132 kW. At the same time peak torque increases to 360 Nm between 1,750 and 2.500 rpm.

As an optimal complement to the STARTECH SD3 power kit there is the STARTECH sport exhausts system with a large oval chrome tailpipe on either side. The fully stainless-steel precise- fit exhaust is available for all engine variants of the Compass, and lends the Jeep a more thrilling exhaust note.

For customizing the exterior STARTECH offers a custom-tailored designer suit. In the front the Compass gets a new face with the STARTECH front fascia. Retaining the original mounting points means easy installation and optimal precise fit.

This modification looks like the answer to a question that no one asked!! The Compass is simply not going to gain the respect of the "Jeep" crowd by adding the Startech treatment. I remember seeing a YUGO once with gold BBS wheels and a rear spoiler, it still sucked and was not improved by the enhancements. My thoughts are "Get a life, Get a REAL Jeep."

I think this helps the front look of the Compass a little bit, but not enough to matter. Besides there are so many problems with the Compass that just touching up the front end a bit is not enough to really make a difference.

Have you seen the recent "Motor Trend" car of the year issue? The Compass was one of the vehicles considered for car of the year and "Motor Trend" has validated what I (and many others who frequent this site) have been saying since the Compass's arrival. "Motor Trend" basically stated the facts about the obvious design, quality, and performance shortcomings that plague this sad little car.

Interestingly, "Motor Trend" also said that the Kia and Hyundai small SUVs are actually better vehicles all around, especially from a quality stand point. I have been a long nay-sayer of Kia and Hyundai vehicles which have traditionally been Korean built crap with NO resale value. Oh, and yes I know that Hyundai is now building some of its vehicles in the U.S. But my point is that it is particulary disheartening to see that DCX is getting its butt spanked by these companies where the Compass is concerned. I do predict that the Compass with either be killed off after a short run, or it will see a drastic make over to address numerous issues. We can only wait and see from here.

Merry Christmas to all!

"Polishing a turd" is what came to mind for me.
