SalesAugust Jeep Sales Figures

Strong Wrangler Sales, Liberty and Grand Cherokee Down a Bit.

Chrysler Group reported U.S. sales of 190,388 units in August, a six-percent decline compared to August 2002 when 210,855 vehicles were sold, calculated on a day-rate basis. August 2002 was the second-best August for vehicle sales in the company's history.

Dodge Ram was the volume leader for the company, posting an August sales record of 43,824 units. Ram was up 12 percent over August 2002 when 40,440 were sold. Ram's sales for the 2003 calendar year to date were the highest on record, 302,480 units, eclipsing the 1999 eight-month total of 292,413 units.

Jeep(R) Wrangler sales of 6,797 units were up four percent over August 2002, when 6,794 were sold.
DaimlerChrysler Corporation U.S. Sales Summary Thru August 2003
Month Sales      DR %         Sales CYTD      DR %
Model         Curr Yr    Pr Yr  Change   Curr Yr      Pr Yr  Change
  Wrangler               6,797    6,794     4%     46,908     44,484     6%
  Liberty               16,352   21,511   -21%    108,296    108,739     0%
  Grand Cherokee        20,050   23,298   -11%    128,340    146,763   -12%
    JEEP BRAND          43,199   51,603   -13%    283,544    299,986    -5%
Looking at the numbers a little more - it appears that Wrangler sales are the only bright spot in the Jeep sales numbers. Both Liberty and Grand Cherokee sales saw double-digit declines versus August of 2002, while the Grand Cherokee is down 12-percent overall from 2002.

Did you notice that the ugliest and least capable Jeep had the greatest decline in sales?

Imagine that!

Jeep builds tougher Wranglers and their sales impove in a weak economy. I guess the Rubicon and the extra horsepower in the SE's I4 engine help.

It's time for DC to toughen up the Liberty and Grand Cherokee as well. Maybe the Grand Cherokee has passed its prime and it's time to build an updated Grand Wagoneer to separate it "size wise" from the Liberty. It's time for DC to build Jeeps that will blow the Hummer H2 and H3 away. If I were the designers at DC, I'd keep the Wrangler going strong. Then I would build Jeeps with Jeep quality and a Hummer look. What would GM do? Take DC to court because their Jeeps look much like Hummers?

DC! Stop making 4x4s that look like the Liberty please!

Looks like the experiment with Liberty's high-rpm but low torque V-6 and independent suspension has failed, and failed miserably. Boulevard cruisers do not make 4WD vehicles. Liberty even lost the up country option of taller springs. You can't put lipstick on a pig and expect real 4WD users to buy it! What a sales slump, the older Cherokee was turning in better sales figures and that at the end of the production run.

It really doesn't suprise me on the sales figures for Jeep. All the cheerleaders now have their Liberty and Jeep has let the Grand Cherokee, which once upon a time the clear leader in its class, become outdated. The 04 update was pretty wasn't much on the Grand. Maybe they will do better in 05. A diesel Liberty? Who cares. I would like to see a diesel Wrangler.

It's a hell of a lot more capable than a Liberty (though that's not saying much).

well, at least the TJ is still going strong. Hopefully that sends a message that people want the real thing. Bring on the Scrambler.

I did my part today, I just returned from my local Jeep dealership where I ordered my 2004 Jeep Rubicon. "Jeepfan" had great points, in addition, Jeep should also stress the fact that the Jeep is "Made in USA"!

I say if Daimler Chrysler were to get rid of their current advertising firm and hire one that would have a fresh approach. To show off what a jeep can actually do.. You would see the numbers jump. Think about it.. How many ad's on t.v. do you see that are for the Hummer 2 or for the Ford products? A TON. Now how many jeep ad's do you see showing off the wrangler, grand cherokee or the liberty in their elements? NONE! or hardly none.
It's like opening the sunday paper to find all the sales papers. If Target didn't advertise one weekend and K-mart did. People remember K-mart and forget about Target's deals.

Chrysler if you are reading this. WAKE UP!!!!

Comming from a sales person who actually sells the jeeps.
