AutoWeek is reporting that GM is reportedly mulling over the idea of a "going-right-after-the-Wrangler" H4.
General Motors’ future product plan includes a back-to-basics, go-anywhere Hummer H4—a rough-and-tough competitor for the Jeep Wrangler. The fourth Hummer could be on sale by 2008 or 2009.
A GM source confirms the company is looking for ways of making a small Hummer on its various sport/utility vehicle and pickup platforms. GM engineers and designers are working on the project, but a chassis for the vehicle has yet to be selected.

![]() That is not a picture of the H4. It is Autoweek's photoshop of what they think the H4 might look like. In fact they photoshoped a picture of the Jeep Jeepster concept from 1998.

![]() I find it amusing that Hummer thinks their H4 concept would compete against the new Wrangler vehicles.
The two-door Wrangler appears to be a logical progression from the current generation. I predict however that the base model will be like the current generation's "Sport" trim level (as opposed to the current SE trim level). It appears that the vehicle will also remain an open-air off-road capable, trail running, rock crawling legend. The four-door Wrangler (Rescue?) will fill the void that has existed for five years, after the passing of the Cherokee. It will offer a more utilitarian, heavy duty, off-road experience than the Liberty. The Liberty is a great vehicle but has received some flak because it is not as simple and rugged as the Cherokee was. Within the next two years the Liberty will be redesigned. I am taking a guess that it will be taken more upscale, along the lines of the Grand Cherokee and Commander. In the next two to three years the Grand Cherokee itself will receive a minor facelift. The big question is whether this TK / TKL architecture will spawn a vehicle like the Gladiator concept. This would lead to quite a large Jeep lineup... one that Hummer would have a hard time competing with. -- ENTRY LEVEL FOUR WHEEL DRIVE -- * Jeep Compass (MK49 ?) * Jeep Patriot (MK74 ?) -- WORLD-CLASS OFF-ROADERS -- * Jeep Wrangler (TK) * Jeep "Rescue" (TKL) * Jeep Gladiator (?) -- LUXURY-INSPIRED OFF-ROADERS -- * Jeep Liberty (KJ/KK) * Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) * Jeep Commander (XK) Just to fuel OnlyOneJeep's hopes... note that there are three vehicles in both of the second categories but only two in the first. Perhaps there is room for a stripped-down (albeit it would have airbags by law) off-roader? |

![]() I find this amusing. The H4 is not very much competition for the Wrangler. A repurposed H3 architecture (which was a repurposed architecture to begin with) with IFS is not going to be a rock-crawling legend like the Wrangler.
While I am not one who thinks that solid axles need to be in every Jeep, they serve their purpose well in the Wrangler. While they are not necessary for normal trail riding, if you are looking to go ROCK CRAWLING, solid axles are the way to go. Not to mention the geniuses at GM choose to place a single locker in their vehicle. They should put in front and rear or ELSDs. From what I have seen of the TK we have nothing to fear. All the techno-gadgetry that OOJ fears will be in the H4 also... because most of it is required or will be required by law within the next few years. With the TK we will get not just one but two (possibly three) great rock-crawling vehicles to add to the already off-road capable Liberty, Grand Cherokee, and Commander. |

![]() Where's the Rollbar? (Mabye Poison Spyder Customs can whip one up)
I like it and I hate to say it, but I hope the TK is up to the task, because it looks like the H4 will be nipping at DCX's high heels. Yeah, GM is an a world of Financial Fecal Fret, and what a better segment to capatilize on, the Small Heavy-Duty Carryall, Ragtop and Rollbar, Extreme Terrain Segment, otherwise known as the jeep (smallcase 'j') to make a shining comeback... (I seem to recall a purchase of an iconic utility vehicle by Chrysler one or two decades or so back that revitalized the entire Chrysler corporation). An H4 would be reminiscent of the K5 Blazer with the removable rear hardtop, the early Bronco, or dare I say it, The Super Scout. Im still a Jeep Guy, but DCX better make sure the Jeep stays a JEEP, otherwise I wont have a brand to stay loyal to, and may just have to migrate. p.s. OOJ, the H4 WOULD beat the crap out of your YJ, by the advance of technology alone, a RAV4 would too. |

![]() Is that IFS on the front of the H4? That's supposed to compete with the Jeep Wrangler? Whose the soft one?

![]() Well since DCX seems to be intent on slowly neutering the Jeep line with soft-utes and yuppie people haulers that are just oozing with leather and unnecessary tech gadgets this breath of "basic functionality" from Hummer is a pleasant surprise for me.
Actually, I don't look to see GM spinning off any cool specialty vehicles anytime soon since they are in a world of financial sh1t right now. But if they do I'd be looking seriously at an "H4" especially if DCX keeps watering down its vehicle lines and looks to completely lose their sense of heritage and off road prowess. I absolutely loved Hummer's H3 pickup truck concept that was show about a year and a half ago. This H4 looks good at this point and if it is as off road capable as I think it would be it would likely find a strong following, and if priced at a fair and realistic MSRP (unlike DCX's bloated TJ pricing) it could do well in the market place. Oh by the way DCX, let me reiterate, if you build the Gladiator (in a 4cyl diesel) I will buy one. |

![]() See, I told ya's the sky IS falling...........
When GM is paying attention, they pay attention. Just when Jeep and their silk tie wearing engineers decide that not "every jeep" needs to be Rubicon-Trail tested in order to be badged a JEEP; Along comes GM with what? A H4 you say? You mean a bare-bones/hose out the floor/diesel motor/and NO A/C and NO Radio? In 2008? Who'd want that? Me. IF my YJ dies of course...and we all know..... It won't. |
