We've heard from several readers about an impending class action law suit by Jeep owners against DaimlerChrylser regarding the 1991-1995 4.0L 6-cylinder engine.

According to one reader, the March 22nd edition of USA Today reported that there is a class action lawsuit regarding problems with the widely used 1991-1995 4.0L 6-cylinder engine. We've heard from readers that Chrysler dealerships have refused to complete warranty work on the engine citing the lawsuit.

We've tried searching the USA Today web site, as well as numerous internet news search enginers but we found nothing.

(update 3/26/99 1310EST) We've just recieved word from a reader with more details:

I had an hour long discussion with the service personnel @ my dealer regarding my Jeep. From what I have been able to gather, the lawsuit stems from the well known "piston slap / noisy valve train" conditions that have been widely discussed among Jeep owners over the past few years. These conditions are what D/C [DaimlerChrysler] is refusing warranty work on. It seems if a customer complains about these conditions they are referring them to the lawyers involved in the suit. After explaining my problem (a bad lifter which appeared in the past month) they road tested my Jeep and called Chrysler. D/C gave the go ahead to fix it, with apologies for the confusion.

I did speak with a woman at the law firm handling the suit for the class, she was of little help other than to describe the suit and gave a June trail date. I supposedly have more info coming in the mail. The lawyer handling the case is Edward T. Joyce, the phone number is 312-957-1039. This number will connect to a automated voice answering system where you get basic info, and can leave your address and phone number for further info.

If anyone has any information about this class action lawsuit, please email us ASAP.
