One of our readers questioned if we would actually run this story - of course we will! But, rather than just reading the autoblog take on this, we went a bit further to the source - an article on freep.com (The Detriot Free Press). Anyway, here's a snippet:

At a time when the popularity of SUVs is waning, the new Jeep Commander -- which the Chrysler Group will launch today at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit -- will be rolled out with an urban, hip-hop marketing campaign.

Missy (Misdemeanor) Elliott is featuring the vehicle in her new video, "Lose Control," and a Chrysler official confirmed that the automaker is in negotiations to expand her promotion of the SUV in an effort to paint a street-smart attitude for the vehicle.

Chrysler is working with Elliott to create 30 seconds of unique music that is going to be featured in the first launch spot for the Commander, which is to hit dealerships in September, and footage of her is expected to be integrated in the advertisement, according to a source familiar with the talks. The person wished to remain anonymous to avoid jeopardizing the negotiations.
Be sure to check out the entire article, for a humourous comparison between Missy Elliott and Chrysler's most recent singing spokeswoman.

There was a time when Jeeps sold because of utilitarian simplicity and superior engineering. If DC would invest in fuel efficient diesels with manual and dsg trannies, they would be able to celebrate and advertise their technical acumen instead of having to spend megabucks on these elusive and foolish totally urban advertisements.

I agree. I personally believe it's in poor taste. I wish Jeep would "drum up" their WWII history and run that with today's slant perhaps showcasing our Present Veterans and Armed Services' Members talking about THEIR Jeeps...What does the "hip-hop" crowd have to do with Old American Patriotism? THAT would be an ad series I would proud to support.
