Next-Generation Jeep Wrangler Production to Move Out of USA?

DaimlerChrysler investigating opening new plant in Ontario or Mexico.
The Globe and Mail is reporting that DaimlerChrysler is considering building a new assembly plant in either Canada or Mexico that may be the site for the assembly of the next-generation Jeep Wrangler. Here's a snippet: DaimlerChrysler Corp. president Dieter Zetsche wants to build the auto maker's new, flexible assembly plant in Ontario, but raised the possibility yesterday that the company could choose Mexico if a deal can't be reached with suppliers and Canadian governments. "We would like -- and I personally would like -- to end up with this project in Ontario and I'm optimistic that we can accomplish that," Mr. Zetsche said. "If we find out we can't, then we'll look for other places and Mexico is certainly a very good environment for a plant as well." ...snip... The new plant is slated to assemble the Dodge M80 compact pickup truck, a compact sport utility vehicle off the same platform, or basic underbody, possibly the next version of the Jeep Wrangler SUV and perhaps a pickup for Hyundai Motor, another auto maker in the DaimlerChrysler AG family. Mr. Zetsche said yesterday that there has been no discussion about another DaimlerChrysler auto maker taking an equity stake in the project. Production volume is expected to be between 200,000 and 250,000 vehicles a year, industry sources said. The target date for the start of production is 2005. DaimlerChrysler manufactures two vehicles in Canada for every one it sells here, which is one indication that it's a favourable jurisdiction for vehicle assembly, Mr. Zetsche said. Mexican made cars are total ripoffs and the cheapest route. So try to be glad that they are considering Canada more than Mexico. However If anyone can get a hold of address' for the heads of the company the best we can do is flood them with letters >=)

Well, it's been a long time since I have written on this site since the intro of the Liberty. YJ's have in the past been made in Canada as well as some XJ's-I know I owned one. I have been to the past XJ plant in Toledo and have seen nothing but a well built vehicle. For what the guys had to work with and the age of the old cherokee plant it was amazing to see the quality of my cherokee that ordered in 2001 of May-one of the last Jeep XJ's built. Let us clarify one thing for all that don't know the Grand Cherokee is a Detroit Jeep originally designed by AMC built at the Jefferson North Park Plant. I have seen the workers at the Toledo Plant and there is a difference in build quality of the vehicles that come out of Toledo vs Detroit. Jeep in Toledo for one has been building Jeeps since WW2 with generations of the same families building them-so they know and care how to build them! Jefferson North Park Grand Cherokees have been built since 93, a little over 10 years. So quality has to be better with the Toledo stuff-especially the with the new Liberty Plant and the old knowledge. So, it would seem better to keep the Wrangler and new Wranglers in Toledo, however, if the new Wrangler has a frame, like it does now, then it means using the old plant like now. So, it means building a new plant somewhere else. Afterall the way DC looks at it they have already satisfied the city of Toledo with a brand new Liberty Plant which they aren't going to just leave and drop production. Now, another case is if they make a uni-frame Wrangler that they might utilize the Liberty plant. I guess what I am getting at is there is a difference in building cars vs trucks-today. Uni-body Liberty's and Grand Cherokees are 'cradled' through with the engine going in from the belly up. Wranglers have a chassis with running gear and the body is dropped on-totally different process.
I hate to say this but the whole thing is political and is an economic move. My opinion keep the Jeep in Toledo as they know what they are doing and have for years. There was nothing wrong with the canadian Jeep that I had. However, Canada didn't invent mass production, didn't have much to do with auto's in general and the US did and that is how it should be and stay over here. If we want to be and stay competitive we need to keep Jeep here in the states period.
Joe

Originally posted by: Utah Well, there is this little things that most Americans probably have not heard of called the "Auto-Pact" between Canada and the USA with respect to the manufacturing of Automobiles and Trucks. And, there are already many huge plants building vehicles in and around the Toronto/Oshawa region in Ontario.
Canadians purchase many vehicles from US manufacturers, that are made in the USA. However, Americans have been purchasing many vehicles from US manufacturers for many years that were made in Ontario. Included in this, is the Jeep brand....at least in the past, when some YJ's were manufactured, I am sure in Ontario.
So...nothing new. I think we would all like to keep the brand out of Mexico, however...as job security is just as important to Canucks, as it is to our American neighbours.

I can't believe DCX would be this stupid, and have to believe this release is an attempt to gain a bargaining position with their American labor force and jurisdictions. My interest in the new offerings in this brand is diminishing with every press release they dump on us. Keep it in Toledo, Daimler!

Harley Davidson and Jeep, the Last two American Icons, we need to fight this one.
