LibertyJeep Grand Cherokee Hoods Flipping Open?
Posted by mike on 2002/10/24 23:00:00 (1077) reads

An investigation is underway regarding the hoods on Grand Cherokees unexpectedly opening.

From WTOL, channel 11 in Toledo, Ohio:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced  that it is stepping up its investigation into the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee because its hood may open unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving.  Nineteen people complained about the problem, but no injuries or accidents were reported.

The administration began a preliminary inquiry on May 17 that covered the 1996 through 1998 model years of the Grand Cherokee.

The agency found most of the complaints and claims to insurance companies for the problem were for the 1997 model year.

A spokeswoman for Jeep's parent company, DaimlerChrysler, said the automaker was not prepared for comment.

I have a 97 Grand, and I've had problems with my hood as well. It didn't fly up, but I had to drive around with a bunjee cord holding it down until I could replace the entire latch assembly to get it to close right.

Add atleast another two hood popp ups to this. I contacted my factory rep as I work on these vehicles. In one instance the hood flew open on me. Almost every hood retaining latch sticks when older , if the hood is not fully closed the secondary latch will not catch it. Jeep should have recalled it. This is one of their most stupid actions to date. There will be many many more of these fly ups. Chrysler does not want to hear about any problems and has a non functioning safety system in force. Chrysler will only fix the problem when it is brought into the sunlight never because it is the correct thing to do.
