I have owned inline diesels in Cummins, Nissan, Isuzu, Vm Moturi and MB configurations. The only V configuration diesel I have owned were Detroit. I hope the Cummins V will be as good as the inline versions above.

Lots of us in the states would love to have diesel Jeeps, but there's a few factors working against us:

1) As of June 2006, the U.S. transitioned to 15ppm max Sulfur (S15) for passenger vehicles. That added to the already high price of diesel (~5-10% higher than gasoline). If we get a cold winter, diesel prices climb even higher (due to fuel oil consumption).
I believe Australia is on S50 as of 2006.

2) New emissions requirements threw the diesel engine manufacturers into a spin, because they now have to produce diesel powertrains with lower emissions. It is taking some OEMs a couple years to figure out a viable (new) design. No one in the U.S. is jumping at the chance to get a car with a refillable urea cartidge! (The 3.0L CRD doesn't need one, I understand.)

3) Based on the Grand Cherokee, the price premium for a diesel is ~$4000. Not a lot of people are clicking their heels over that either.

4) Diesel is not available at a lot of filling stations.

So, until the price of diesel fuel and diesel vehicles comes down, there's not going to be a big demand for diesels in the U.S. Even with diesels touting a 20-25% MPG increase, that $4000 buys a lot of extra gas...

Actually the improvement in MPG is more like 30% (compare the Liberty CRD to the gas Liberty). I drive 20,000 miles a year. If fuel cost $3 a gallon (the downtown station in my city still has reg for over $3 a gallon, and Diesel and gasoline have been running neck and neck for the last year or so) it would take me 5.7 years to pay it off. I've owned my Cherokee for 11 years now, so that would be free money. Also, having clean Diesel is a good thing unless you like to breath that stink.
