Heavily-disguised photos of the 2005 Grand Cherokee during testing appear...

TheCarConnection.com landed the first spy shots of the 2005 Grand Cherokee during testing in California. Here's a snippet:

The eagerly awaited next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee finally has broken the cover of secrecy. A prototype for the new off-roader has been spied at a Chrysler test site, and a prototype in heavy camouflage has been spied while undergoing brake testing in the extreme heat of a California desert. The rear view clearly shows the vehicle to have a solid rear axle — a design still preferred by Jeep for its ruggedness — although all other car makers have by now incorporated independent rear suspensions for their new SUVs.

This next generation Grand Cherokee has come a long way. Initially, it was planned for the 2002 model year, which means an introduction date in 2001. But those plans were cancelled in the aftermath of the DaimlerChrysler merger. A new Jeep master plan was worked out, which took into account joint corporate considerations and also affected the Grand Cherokee. One of these considerations is cost saving from a pronounced top-down parts-sharing philosophy, which means that the new Grand Cherokee will draw heavily on the current-and next-generation Mercedes ML-Class models. Since the new ML will not be introduced before 2004, this meant that the new Grand Cherokee needed to be delayed. It is now bound for a 2005 debut.

...snip...

Any information about how ample the use of Mercedes-Benz parts will be currently is covered in a thick cloud of secrecy. At the recent launch of the Crossfire, DaimlerChrysler officials were extremely eager to stress that the degree of SLK parentship would remain unrepeated. But seeing is believing. We anticipate that the degree of similarity between the forthcoming Chrysler 300C and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class will become the benchmark for the Grand Cherokee and the ML-Class.

i can't say how or why, but i've seen it. The original story is a good dipiction of it. The head lights and mercedes-hints make it a beautiful car. i didn't think of asking, but i am not sure if the front axle is solid or not. i hope not as i am an avid off-roader and with a long wheel base already an independant front suspension, ground clearance will shrink even more. i like it. if you want a GC, just wait until the NY auto show, sneak a peak and be impressed. Also, i wouldn't worry about the engine, the majority of GC's made with the exception of the laredo have been v-8. These new babies are gonna have towing power galore, at least that's my guess considering Daimler-Chrysler last five vehicle unveilings

I can't offer the in-site you are looking for but I did have a 95 and 91 Ford Explorer and now have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and 2001 Wrangler and I can tell you some of the general differences between Fords and Jeeps that I noticed. Sorry, I can't comment on the 2004 GC although I'd imagine it is very similar to the 99-2003 GC so you may want to ask someone who has owned a GC for a while.

1991 and 1995 Explorers

Pros:

-Plush
-Large Interior
-Cheap Parts
-Great road trip vehicle because no noise and comfortable.
-Drives in snow OK.
-Good paint.

Cons:

-Cheap seats. I know the brand new Explorers are even worse.
-Bad Auto Tranny. I had a V6 which uses a different tranny than the V8. Most people have needed them rebuilt after high miles.
-Not a great off-road vehicle. Basically a mini-van/4x4
-Not great acceleration with the V6.
-Power steering pump will go out after high miles.
-Chews through tires and rotors - needed to be replaced quite often.
-Suspension parts always break because the vehicle is so heavy.
-Awful gas hog 14 mi/gal

2001 Jeep Cherokee and 2001 Jeep Wrangler

Pros:
-Small vehicle easy to park
-Much more reliable trannys than Ford
-Suspension more durable than Ford's due to better parts and lighter weight.
-More reliable I6 engines.
-Small on outside while large on inside (for Cherokee)
-Better acceleration.
-Better off-road.
-Better headlights. I prefer headlights to headlamps which get sctratched and are very expensive to replace.
-Tires tend to last longer.
-Better gas milage 22mi/gal

Cons:
-Weak paint.
-Road noise.
-Poor back seat which is not a problem with the GC.

Overall I'm much happy with Jeeps than with Fords. I sure I'll never buy another Ford unless it is a pickup.

I just hope that it looks nothing close to the current hideous ML. Based on the IFS in the Liberty, I believe that it will unfortunately lack a front solid/live axle

Does anyone have any more information about the new GC? Is it going to be longer, wider, taller? Are there any more pics out there? What are your thoughts on the 2004 GC? I torn between waiting for the 2005 or purchasing the 2004 now. If anyone has any comments about the 2004, please submit them, or send me an email. There a mixed reviews on the GC as is...reliability??? Is that a concern any of you have heard? The other SUV i'm considering is the Explorer.....whats the better car?

I love the I6 engine for the TJ and Cherokee. Perhaps the V6 is better for the heavier Grand Cherokee but I would have preferred a 4.2 liter I6 with 275 HP like the one in the Chevy TrailBlazer. The I6 is reliabe and easy to maintain. I know a guy with 3 Cherokees - 2 with 300K+ miles on the I6. The V6 may be great too. Only time will tell. I don't know enough about it to say.

The spy photos of the GC are encouraging (at least it looks less mini-van like than the current GC). If it doesn't have IFS, that'll be a good thing too.

The same article has spy shots of the H3 HUMMER but I can't tell much from them.

I think it will look a little bit better then that. Looks like it will be more Cherokee like from the shape of vehicle in the spy shot. Hope it changes dramatically from the minivan looking thing it is right now.

Does anyone have any idea or thoughts as to what the GC is going to look like? The computer image that you can find on this site, is that close? What have you heard? Big change from 2004? Is the 3.7 V6 a better engine than the I6 they have in it now? What are your thoughts???
