CommanderCommander to Wither Away, Replaced by 7-Seat Grand Cherokee?
Posted by mike on 2007/10/12 8:02:15 (2778) reads

They guys over at LeftLaneNews are reporting that information from Chrysler LLC suppliers indicates that when the current generation Commander runs its course in a couple of years, we won't be seeing an "all new" version.

Introduced at the New York auto show in 2005, the Commander will only go for one life cycle and cease production sometime around 2010. Slow sales and company reorganization — along with weak fuel economy and poor reviews — have doomed Jeep's seven-passenger 'ute.

This is completely in-line with what we've been hearing lately regarding the shrinking of the Jeep nameplates and the cannibalization of sales.

Neither of them are going away. But they're both going away.

They (Jeep/Cerebrus/whoever) are simply holding onto a name that people recognize ("Grand Cherokee") and putting it on a vehicle that makes sense in buyers eyes (an upsized Commander). The Commander seems to be outselling the Dur-dodo right now and the vehicle itself isn't as good as it could be. Merging the them (GC & Commander) allows them to make one that's better than the two separately.

As a vehicle name, Grand Cherokee is outdated, but everyone's familiar with it. Name recognition shouldn't be underestimated. After all consider how many people buy Hondas just bcause they associate the words "reliable" & "affordable" with it? Commander falls more in line with the naming direction (Liberty, Compass, Patriot, etc) but streamlining things to maximize sales isn't something I would criticize them for.

On the other hand, perhaps this is a prelude to an across-the-board rebadging/restructuring that we've all been drooling for. Maybe they'll drop the Compass and replace it with a 2door offroad Wrangler alternative (call it a "Mutt"); drop the Patriot in favor of a Gladiator then replace the Commander & GC with a Rescue (7-seater that looks and functions like a Wrangler). And finally, they'll rename the Wrangler "CJ-9" and the the new Liberty the "XJ-2."

And then pigs will sprout wings...

((a guy can dream can't he?))

Since there was a CJ-10, If they renamed the Wrangler, it would be CJ-11...

As an owner of a TJ for 10 years and 170,000+ miles, I would prefer TJ-2.

2010 is the Commanders model year. Fact.

BTW, for the people who want the Compass gone....your dream may come true. I would guess a 2 to 3 more years on the market. Then say bye bye.

Chryco won't issue a press release right up until the very end, if they even issue a press release at all on it.

2010 is the end of the Commander (XK) though. You can bank on that FACT.

I have said before, Lose the Compass and make a Willys-based 2 door 4-5 seater with the 4WIS, CVT2L Transaxle, make it a hybrid W/ 40 Miles at 40 mph battery-only capability, and THEN sell it fully loaded (if you consider no interior flash, manual doors/windows, no CD (I-pod input) and basic AC and ABS fully loaded) for under $14,000, and eve I'd buy one!

Re: Commander to Wither Away, Replaced by 7-Seat Grand Ch...
I am glad to see some support for the Commander---Probably the most market-researched vehicle in the Chrysler lineup--And Jeep deliverd when they put out the Commander...

We own a 4.7L Commander and it is great---Great in snow, great off road and great in the sand...My only complaint is, of course, mileage-city mileage...We are getting 15 mpg city with some highway miles...I'm sure if we did straight city it would be more like 14 or even 13...But straight highway mileage is awesome, we are getting 22mpg on roadtrips. MDS is nice to save a mpg or two, but what the Commander needs is a Hybrid system or a diesel (or both).

I am glad to see a hybrid system coming down the line. It will be a two-mode hybrid coupled to the HEMI package, and hopefully, the Cummins 4.7L will find it's way into the next gen GC/Commander.

I am hoping the next gen is named Commander, because it has earned the top-spot in the Jeep lineup...Let's face it, the GC is old and stale as a platform. The basic formula has been around since the Grand Wagoneer, although we all have to hand it to Jeep for the staedy evolution of the platform over the years.

However, if Chrysler absolutely insists on keeping the GC as the Jeep company flagship, then I wouldn't want to see the Commander as a stretched 7 seat version of a 7 seat Cherokee, there will already be 3 versions of the platform running around, (GC, Durango, Aspen) so making a Commander like the oth ers would just make it a mutant.

I would rather like to see the Commander built as an 8-seat version of the Rescue concept, with the next generation Cummins turbo-diesel as the exclusive engine.

After all, Chrysler does have a track record of 'Hiding the future in plain sight'

Um, you do realize that the Commander is nothing but a GC with a different body on it right? They didn't even both changing the wheelbase. GC and Commander are the SAME platform. And the current WK Grand Cherokee has nothing in common with the old Grand Wagoneers.

I do agree with your sentiments regarding the future GC/Commander though. As I've said on here before, for all intensive purposes I think the next gen GC will really be the next gen Commander (ie: 7-seater), they'll just carry over the GC name because of the name recognition that 'Grand Cherokee' has. Plus, the rest of the world still has the Cherokee (what we call the Liberty in the US), so in that respect it makes sense to keep the GC name. Personally I agree that GC should be retired and the Commander name should carry on.

I don't think we'll ever see anything along the lines of the Rescue Concept though unfortunately. I fully expect the next gen W platform (Durango/GC/Aspen) to use the new baby Cummins though.

Re: Commander to Wither Away, Replaced by 7-Seat Grand Ch...
The Grand Cherokee should be dropped in my opinion. Grand implies big, which it's never been except in price.
The Liberty & Unlimited are now crowding it's space.
the Commander should go to the "really fully-size" market, and stop being based on the GC
which is "wannabe full-size" IMHO.
The old Grand Wagoneer was a real full-size SUV. It irked me when Jeep advertised the "Full-size Grand Cherokee with
the CRD". It's mid-sized at best.
How do I define full-size?
A useable 3rd row that non-gymnast adults can get in/out of comfortably, and an available diesel towing up to 8000lbs = full size.

Cerebus should learn from the mistakes of their Daimler predecessors and the GC/Commander should go to the Durango platform and
use it's unique Jeep heritage to standout above it's brethern. Not blend in with them.
How, you ask?
Offer the heavy-duty engines in the heavy-duty vehicles: Wrangler for Off Road and
Commander for the tow/haul of big gear = CRD and MDS Hemi. Offer optional airbag suspensions for loads
and ride adjustable heights. Offer disconnects and lockers front & rear like the Rubicon and Power Wagon.
Add more of what makes Jeep unique and make it affordable in base trim.
Geeezsh, do I have to spell out everything for these guys?

And for the love of God, drop the Compass... that thing is worse than the Gremlin and Aztec.
And somebody please slap those guys over in the Skunkwerks for teasing us with the
JK50 concept last year... getting me a hard over the CRD in the JKL... oughta be a Cummins and ya know it!

Ignoring that your full-size definition doesn't apply to the Grand Wagoneer anyways, that "mid-sized" WK Grand Cherokee has a bigger wheelbase, length, width and height than the SJ Grand Wagoneer. I didn't believe it myself until I saw a WK parked next to an SJ but the numbers don't lie:

WK - 109.5" wheelbase, 186.7" length, 84.2" width, 68.7" height
SJ - 108.7" wheelbase, 186.4" length, 74.8" width, 66.4" height

Granted, the old ZJ and even the WJ Grand Cherokees were smaller than the Grand Wagoneer, but the new WKs are bigger than any stock Wagoneer ever was.

(numbers from the wikis)

i can definitely tell ya that the wk grand cherokee is not bigger than a fsj at all. heres a pic of my cherokee next to my dad's wk:

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/77chief/DSC03202.jpg

the wk has basically no room inside of it compared to a fsj.

now i dont get why jeep has stuck with the grand cherokee name. its not like they still have a vehicle in the US named cherokee, so to have a grand version of a vehicle they dont even sell makes no sense. what they should do is a make the wrangler smaller like a cj5, keep the 4 door wrangler the size it is and have a a bigger better looking commander and have a pickup version of it. all of them solid front axle and body on frame. or they could bring back the 1977 jeep lineup. cj5,cj7,cherokee, j10,j20, wagoneer.

sorry but that pic definitely didn't prove your point. GC looks just as big or bigger, especially looking at height of the actual metal, minus wheels. including wheels, the cherokee looks lifted, which brings it up to about the same height as the GC.

Placing the Grand Cherokee and Durango on the same architecture is necessary due to the closing of Newark Assembly.

This probably means the Grand Cherokee will grow in size (everything below it has grown).

You may see a return of the Commander on a stretched Grand Cherokee platform if fuel economy issues settle down, otherwise, don't expect large SUVs from the new Chrysler.

I am kind of curious about the validity of all of the article. All the other sources point to the next generation top-end SUV from Jeep sharing a platform with the next generation Durango. So unless the Durango is also using a MB chassis...

Also, Jeep is better off carrying the Commander name if they make it boxy. Kind of silly to have a Grand Cherokee still around when there is no Cherokee name plate (here in the US).

I would much rather see the Commander stay around in a boxy form but just grow about 10 - 12 inches in length, an inch or two in ride height, etc. I would rather see the Grand Cherokee get replaced with something much more agressive like the Trailhawk concept (although I dislike the concepts rear quarter design).

There will be no MB platform sharing (that I'm aware of). The next gen Durango, GC, and Aspen will share a common platform. The next gen GC will not be BOF, so make your own conclusions about the next gen Durango/Aspen. ;)

The article is correct that the Commander is going away at the end of its product life cycle.

As I've said before though, for all practical purposes I think it will be the Grand Cherokee (ie: 5-seater) that goes away and the next gen Commander (ie: 7-seater) will be called Grand Cherokee. I don't expect to see a big change in size vs the current WK/XK though. It will still be smaller than the Durango/Aspen, which is supposed getting downsized for the next gen model.

That's 2 years longer than I thought it would last. I always liked the exterior (reminds me of my XJ... but on steroids) but that 3rd row (eliminating any useful cargo space) was ridiculous.

Ditch the Compass with it!

Then, extend & square up the GC, and we'll have an all-boxy lineup, like it should be! Right angles rule!

Maybe these cutbacks will make room for a Scrambler "JKS"... FINALLY!

The overlapping amazes me. With the Liberty/Nitro around, who would pay 20k more for a Grand Cherokee? It's basically the same size and offers the same or less options. I never thought i'd say this, but Jeep has too many Jeeps... on that note, who's going to pay for a loaded Patriot when you can have a Liberty for the same price?! Somebody somewhere SERIOUSLY needs to be fired.
I don't get why they didn't build the rugged patriot concept vs. the pansy cute-ute it turned out to be. We all know the mileage is b.s. With the artists impressions they had originally released, it could've been an H3 killer. The Liberty could've been the new Grand and the Commander could've been upped to match the Durango in size. But hey... it's easy being an armchair quarterback, right?

Same or less options as a Grand Cherokee? Really? When did the Libby get a V8/HEMI? Plus different 4WD systems, and it's a luxury vehicle so it's got a totally different appeal and status. It also looks very different.

By your logic, with the JK Unlimited around, why would anyone spend the same money for a Liberty?? Or why would anyone buy an Acura, Cadillac, Lexus, etc when you can get the same basic thing as a Honda, Chevy, or Toyota?

There's overlap btwn big and small models all the time. Why would you pay for a loaded Durango, Canyon, or Tacoma when you could have a Ram, Silverado, or Tundra for the "same" price? Maybe because some people what nice small vehicles and others would like a basic big one?

While the Patriot may not be a fuel sipper, it's going to get better mileage than the Liberty, and it's smaller, and yes, it's cheaper.

And I'm not sure what artists impressions of the Patriot you saw, but it looks pretty close to the early drawings and CG images that I saw, other than having smaller wheels and tires. Had they made it an "H3 killer" it would have competed directly with the JK Unlimited.

I do agree though that there's too many Jeeps. They need to get rid of the Compass and Grand Cherokee. Keep the Patriot (small), Liberty (medium), and Commander (large). I have a feeling that's going to be the basic Jeep SUV line-up come 2010 anyway.
