Updating the Cherokee would have been the best option since is a lot cheaper than building a whole new Liberty. The Cherokee was not perfect but with updates/options like a sunroof, new interior, rear tire carrier option and an updated rear seat you'd have a vehicle with low production costs thus higher profit; plus benifits over the Liberty such as: better off-road, more cargo room, better torque to weight ratio.

I have no problem with soccer moms wanting Libertys. I just wish Jeep offered a cheap, bare bones 4x4 with 4 doors.

I agree with the previous post. Other than the IFS I like everything about the Liberty except for the front end styling. You put smaller projector headlights
and a flater hood on them and I think they would look a lot better. I don't
expect that to happen since that styling theme seems to be in every new Jeep concept as of late.

I looked in the archives. In June 1997, Jeep sold 14,062 Cherokees. That's more than the Liberty ever sold, and it was 13 years old with just a slight remake. Think if they had stayed with the Cherokee theme when they did the full redesign instead of the frog-like Liberty with IFS and limited luggage space behind the rear seat? They would be selling a lot more of them if they had!

I'm still not impressed with the Liberty. It looks more like a frog than a Jeep. I am glad it is making $$ for Jeep though. Notice Wranglers are up quite a bit from last year. This impressed me since the Liberty and GC are down from last year. A better SE and an all-new Rubicon probably deserve the credit. Perhaps there is still a market for serious off-roaders after all. Imagine what a 4 door Wrangler could have done.

If the Liberty ever has a live axle option and a more Jeep like body, I'd want one.

Well I was one of the biggest Liberty bashers when it was released, but I have to admit after I saw it I thought it would be good for my Parents. They ended up getting one last year and it's been incredible. It may not be as rugged looking as a Cherokee, but if they fill that void with something like a 4 door Wrangler, then the Liberty really is a great addition to the Jeep lineup.

I'm glad to hear that it is very reliable and they are good off-road although I still love my Cherokee. Is it true that they beefed up the rotors in the Liberty?

I just wish that the Liberty looked more like a Cherokee (or Dakar) and not like a not like a Toyota or Honda.

You know I sell the Jeep Liberty. Only been in sales for over a year.. Still get alot of people wanting the old Cherokee. I didn't think much of the liberty until my parents bought one. Ever since then They have grown on me. I sold a Wrangler to a jeep engineer who tried to tell me that the Liberty was actually built better than the grand cherokee. He told me some stories on what they put the liberty through.. He said they had plans for a V8 version, but never went through with it. He told me just how capable the Liberty really is off road (as good as the Grand he said). After that encounter. I looked at the liberty in a whole new way...
I ended up purchasing one myself.. Yes people bash the liberty. But compared to the old cherokee.. They Hardly ever come in for service. Our service bay hardly ever has any in the shop. That is a big imporvement in quality..

IF jeep would just market thier vehicles alot better showing what they can and will do, and why they are called a Jeep. I think the Wrangler and The Grand would sell twice as much.
