WranglerLive in West Virginia? Own a Liberty Renegade, Break the Law
Posted by mike on 2002/10/15 23:00:00 (292) reads

The new Jeep Liberty Renegade is deemed illegal to own if you live in West Virginia.

From WTVM in Columbus, Georgia:

Buying a Jeep Liberty Renegade is enough to make you an outlaw in West Virginia.Renegades are illegal in the state, because they're too high.

At 72 inches, the Renegade's roof-mounted light bar is too far off the ground. West Virginia law limits light heights to 42 inches, so inspection stickers cannot be issued for the Renegade.

State police say it's O-K to drive Renegades in West Virginia if they're registered in other states, but West Virginians are barred from owning them.

A spokeswoman for DaimlerChrysler, which produces the Jeep line, says West Virginia may be the only state where the Renegade is illegal. She says she hopes something can be worked out.

One Jeep dealer says not being able to see the model is costing him money.

Hey he was probably posting at 2 in the morning, thus wrangler renegade. I think it's funny that you can marry your cousin in West Virginia but you can't have roof mounted lights.....

I think its time for west virgina to accpet change, grow and become more modern, what about cab marker lights on semis? or large pickups?
Stop wating time and money on antique laws and do some progressive law enforcement.
thanks
sean

here is my comment, remove the light bar , but then I'm sure it's not 30 inches tall, they should repeal the law and allow the sale & ownership of this Jeep.

Isn't WV the state of Robert Byrd? 'Nuff said. All DC needs to do is rename it the Liberty Byrd and voila! Legal. And I thought Arkansas was backwards!!

here is my comment I am from West Virginia, but don't live there now. I was in WV when this story broke and feel it is kind of crazy to have say that a new vehicle cannot be purchased with the light bar already on it but you can put aftermarket lights onto rollbars. After the story was on the news I watched and counted no less than 10 trucks with rollbar mounted lights that have current state inspection stickers on their trucks. I believe the law is outdated and needs to be changed, the roof mounted lights on the Renegade are for off road use only. Wake Up West Virginia, I won't be moving back until the law changes, I don't want to be an outlaw with my TJ's light bar or my wife's Liberty if I put a light bar onto it.

why dont they just cover up the lights? like on those show trucks with the light bars they have those smiley face covers. and then when you go offroad, you can take the covers off.
