Want (need) some "official" news about the Jeep Liberty? Then point your browser at www.jeepunpaved.com (the official jeep site) and behold, the greatest source of Jeep Liberty information this side of Stuttgart! Oh yeah, and make sure you have the Macromedia Flash Player installed (http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/download/) - you're gonna need it! In addition to plenty of official propaganda, you'll find offical pricing information, a FAQ page, a "Build My Liberty" page, and a complete list of specifications. The site touts the Liberty as "the next great Jeep idea" - we've heard rumors that this phrase will be the backbone of the Liberty's massive advertising campaign. One of our favorite features of the site is the "Vehicle Comparison" section, where you can directly compare the Liberty with the competition's offerings. Just for kicks, we compared the 2002 Liberty 4X4 Limited with the 2001 Nissan XTerra SE 4X4 and discovered the following facts: - The Liberty has a slightly larger engine (3.7L V6 vs. 3.3L V6) that produces more horsepower (210 vs. 170)
- The Liberty produces more torque (235 lbs ft vs. 200)
- The XTerra has a slightly larger fuel tank (19.4 gal vs. 18.5) - NOTE: EPA fuel economy numbers are not yet available for the Liberty
- The XTerra and the Liberty have identical wheelbases (104.30 in)
- The XTerra is 3.8 inches longer than the Liberty, but the vehicles have virtually the same height and width
- The Liberty has almost 2 more inches of ground clearance (10.10 in vs. 8.4)
- The Liberty weighs over 200 lbs less than the XTerra (automatic transmission)
- The Liberty has over twice as much towing capacity than the XTerra
According to the site (in the "Build My Liberty" section) available exterior colors for the Liberty are: - Black Clear Coat
- Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat
- Dk. Garnet Red Pearl Coat
- Flame Red Clear Coat
- Patriot Blue Pearl Coat
- Salsa Red Pearl Coat
- Shale Green Metallic Clear Coat
- Steel Blue Pearl Coat
- Stone White Clear Coat
- Woodland Brown Satin Glow
Another cool area of the site is within the "Design" tab, in the Concept|Designer area - included here is a brief Q&A with the chief Liberty designer, Bob Boniface. When asked what some of the main objecttives when he was designing the Liberty, he replied, "One of the main objectives was to design a vehicle that was totally different from the Grand Cherokee, one that had its own identity and its own image. It still had to be a Jeep vehicle, but it had to have its own identity. So that's when we came up with the more upright profile, the short overhangs and the external spare. That's also the time we came up with the overall aesthetic of the car, which was derived more from the Wrangler side of the family. If the information on the offical site isn't enough for you, be sure to click on the "Get a Brochure" link to get an actual printed brochure in your mailbox (no, not your email box, but your snailmail box)!

I was saying that an image is not a good reason to buy a Jeep, although it helps. The Liberty is not CUTE, you morons. It's bigger than the vehicle that it replaces, for pete's sake. It it because it's round?.. Can your sense not handle that? As for your insults, it sounds like a bunch of middle-aged losers who haven't had any fresh pussy except for their butt-ugly wives' are turning gay and asking me to put on mascara and to hold them!!! To answer that, I tell you: burn in hell forever, O.K.? Back to the Jeep Liberty :Like I've said before, It's called progress and capitalism--the carmaker will create what will sell, and all good things (Cherokee) must come to an end. I'll bet you jackasses are still pissed that Bambi got killed , eh? Nobody's asking you to buy a Liberty-- keep your Cherokees, if you like 'em--I'm selling mine in approximately a year. The Liberty's short back end that I'm assuming lead you to the Kia Sportage comparison just makes for a better breakover angle, right? Yes,It does, significantly better. You can compare the two Jeeps for yourselves. It's not too different from the cab-forward that Chrysler used on other vehicles. More space between the axles, which means less bulk fore and aft of them, which translate to better handling and in this case, greater angles at at which to rockcrawl without body contact. So what's wrong with that? I thought you boys didn't want to compromise off-road ability? You really have no legitmate complaints and you can't argue anything except for your personal opinions on the looks of the Liberty. But you're butting your heads into the wall and you'll be eating your words as time goes on. Wait and see. Like I said, if you hate comfort and want ALL off-road ability, buy a Humvee.

Originally posted by: Utah haha....OK, I get it now Jerry C. Because I like the styling of the Cherokee, and I think it looks more "masculine" than a RAV-4....my "man-hood" comes into question. Would you also question my manhood because I would prefer to wear a suit to go to a business meeting, rather than a dress? Hey....just cause you like wearing a dress Jerry C, does not make you a bad person...so don't cry.
My "man-hood" is secure....and my eyes are still working too! They tell me that the styling of the Liberty puts it in the same category as other "cute-utes". That's my opinion. I owned a 78 CJ-7 for 10 years.....and it looked nothing like the Liberty to me...except for a few similar features in the front end.
My eyes also tell me that almost every time I pull up beside a RAV-4, Grand Vitara, or KIA Sportage, there is a female behind the wheel. Now that's not a bad thing....cause I enjoy looking at the fairer sex....but, that is the market segment who purchase cute-utes. So maybe the one good thing about the Jeep Liberty is that we might see more ladies (cause that's who will be buying this new Jeep) posting on this message board. Best thing about that for you Jerry C....is that you will now have someone to share your tips with on how to apply your eye-liner, while driving your new Jeep Liberty to the shopping mall.
Seriously though Jerry.....you attack my man-hood for stating that the Cherokee has a "masculine" look....and then you agree with me in your next sentence, buy describing feminine looking vehicles. You can't have it both ways bud....so make your points without getting personal...and try and get your facts straight at the same time.
As for Joe-Nos.....you agree with me too...and then also jump on the .... if it makes you feel manly...than go for it band-wagon.
So....I guess I have to re-state my earlier point cause some of you just ain't getting it: Soccer Moms buy Cute Utes....they like the look and the car-like ride. A lot of men buy trucks and SUV's. They like the "masculine" looks...and enjoy the tough, rugged ride.
If the Liberty looks cute...it will appeal to the ladies who buy the Cute-Utes. But if it rides rough and tough like a Jeep....then maybe they will just buy a RAV-4 etc with thier car-like rides instead. If men find the Liberty looks cute....well they just won't buy it.
So, my point is....the Liberty might strike out with both groups of purchasers. That's my opinion.

Yes, I'm aware that some vehicles themselves really are masculine/feminine by their image/looks-- that's inescapable. Ex: VW Cabriolet-feminine. Dodge diesel 1-ton-masculine. The Liberty isn't a "cute" Jeep just because it has round edges!!!! It is both a modern update and a wind resistance improvement. It is bigger, easier to drivr and more functional. Simple as that. If anything, it looks more like Jeep than anything since the CJs. It has the rounded lights and seven slat grille that are so familiar. No one will ever mistake it for a Geo or Kia,as some people have suggested, unless you're tripping or your vision is totally gone. There's no similarity!! That reminds me of when the new 1997 F-150s were coming out, some people said it looked like a Dodge. Seriously! Yeah, I guess manyl trucks look alike if you don't care or pay attention. The sun and the moon are both round and up in the sky, but are they the same?

That segment is anybody who wants a Cute-Ute. It's easy to see that. Test reports and articles about the Liberty are always mentioning Escapes, RAV-4's, Trackers and Grand Vitara's as the competition for Liberty. Even the previous poster is comparing the Liberty to the Escape. There's nothing wrong with that.....but make no mistake.....the Liberty is not appealing to the same group of purchasers who for the most part, own Cherokee's. I don't care if 90% of Cherokee owners never go off road. They still like a rough and tumble...somewhat crude....classic looking.....and dare I say "masculine" SUV. It's always nice to know that your Jeep can handle the rough stuff on the trails....even if you don't want to trail ride. The Liberty might sell well, but there is a lot of competition in that sector of the market. If the Liberty looks cute...but rides a bit rough as some test reports state....then who is going to buy it? Certainly not the women, soccer-moms, and posers who drive the Cute-Utes already out there. The market-place is being flooded with Sport Utility Vehicles that are all trying to cater to this crowd who drive RAV-4's etc. Jeep is taking a run at the same customer with the Liberty, but the Cherokee offered something different....that was it's strength. This is my opinion....and I might be wrong in a big way.....but I don't think so.

Sorry, that just won't do! According to the Jeep employee in an earlier comment on this list, it has worse fuel mileage than the XJ. Plus it is longer and wider, and I have to squeez my XJ through tough trails as it is. Plus it's ugly. After 15 years of owning XJ's I was ready for an improved Jeep, and it didn't have to be an XJ, but this Liberty thing is just junk. I'll keep the XJ and solid axles thank you.

2. What is the difference between a solid front axle compared to the one in the new liberty. This is the number one complaint I hear reguarding the new liberty.
3. What does the Lo gear do? Does it double the torque? What is torque?
For Jerry C:
1. Do women piss in the shower?

BTW Joe....you yourself said (in an earlier post) that the Liberty is going after the Cute-ute market, and others have posted that they have seen it, and it does have that Cute-ute styling.

However; everyone is forgetting the whole point. Jeep has marketed the Jeep Liberty as a mini/cute-suv because these SUVs sell very well. This is what 90% of the suv market wants. Most people are asking Jeep to keep releasing true/manly suvs. This might make them feel better about their manhood knowing there are no cute Jeeps out there; but it will run Jeep out of business.
To make you manly SUV owners feel better, I'm sure Jeep will release another Jeep model that will be marketed more like the Xterra (a rough and tumble suv). If this type of suv makes you feel more like a man, go with it.

That's what was intended. Get this thorough your heads: 1.Vehicles must change. and 2.The car companies must sell to the people who will buy them and 3. Changes can be made with very little compromise in performance , but great strides in passenger comfort, safety, efficiency, and better use of space . How hard is this to understand? Keep your Cherokees, or buy something else. The Wrangler is still pretty much the king of the hill right from the factory. I guess many of you will be screaming "sellout" once again when Chrysler introduces the next biggest thing from Jeep. As long as Jeep never forgets their basic role and purpose, then I'm not really worried. Point being: you can't please everyone. But you guys are starting to sound like the people who are still disappointed that Dale Earnhardt and Elvis are dead. No one gives a rat's ass. There's nothing you can do to impede progress, so stop wasting your breath.

And it'll kick the Liberty's tail-- on road and off-road. You know that this will probably happen in 5 to 7 years, 10 at most. And please promise me that you guys won't still be on here talking about the glory of your 17 m.p.g. 4.0 I-6s, crappy interiors, and heavy metal bodies.Don't forget the narrow seats electrical problems, and small mirrors. The Cherokee is still a good-looking vehicle, though. That will always be true, just like the first Willys-Overland and the CJs. I await your volley of curses and insults. Give my infidel hide 40 or more lashes. I can take it. In fact, the worst punishment you could give is to strap me in a Pontiac Aztec with an un-removable(is that a word?) seatbelt and make me drive it for the rest of my days. Ha! Ha!

The real towing capacity is 2000 lbs for the base model - 5,000 when equipped with the V6, automatic transmission, and trailer tow package. The figures posted in the comparison are an obvious error (which apparently fooled you and the people running this site).

If the 5-speed is not available DC might as well throw in the towel... VERY BAD MARKETING MOVE. Some people still do want a manual!
