 Chrysler President Looks Towards a Hybrid Future for All Jeeps |
Jim Press, vice chairman and president of Chrysler LLC, last week made a comment how every single Chrysler vehicle is being designed so that it can be adapted to support a gas-electric hybrid powertrain.
In fact, Press's statement is the most sweeping endorsement of hybrid vehicles by any manufacturer - Toyota included - and it represents a huge reversal in attitude toward hybrids. Scorned as uneconomical curiosities only a few years ago, they are now solidly in the mainstream. Whereas 13 hybrid models were for sale in 2007, there are, by one count, expected to be more than 60 available by 2011. GM announced this week that it will offer at least 16 hybrid models by 2012.

Standardization of parts will occur when Chrysler adopts an entire hybrid fleet, and hence the price per vehicle would go down. Again, I call for Chrysler to eliminate the starter, and make every car, truck and van in the fleet Light Hybrid at the very minimum, and offer 2-mode hybrid on all models. A Bluetec Diesel Hybrid Wrangler would easily meet the New CAFE standards, and be more driveable, on and off road. What am I looking for in a Hybrid Wrangler? 6 speed manual transmission (less complex than the GM-Mercedes-BMW automatic) Battery-only range of 40 miles at 40 M.P.H. Heavy Hybrid range of 80 M.P.G. for the first gallon, and 40 M.P.G. each gallon after that. Light hybrid engine start-stop when the car is not moving. "Clutchless 1st gear" start in 4x4 high and low for off road driving, snow driving, and rock crawling...a simple tap of the accelerator would replace removing the starter interlock fuse and using the key and starter motor to creep when offroad, a common jeeping offroad technique. I just read RUBICON's Posting, and I agree, just please make it the Willy's concept and not that ugly 2 seater, and price it to compete with the Scions. |

Re: Chrysler President Looks Towards a Hybrid Future for ... Give us diesel hybrids backed by Lithium Ion batteries like the Renegade concept. That may have been an ugly little vehicle but I like the powertrain concept.

 Now, if the OEMs & the aftermarket could just come up with economical & standardized replacement battery packs & motor-generators, I might just line up for a Hybrid Wrangler. I'm not sure I'm ready to pay a $3000-$5000 premium, though... and meeting the new CAFE is gonna cost us... either in dollars or horsepower.  |
