Grand CherokeeDaimlerChrysler Reports No Mechanical Problems Found in Grand Cherokee Shifting

DaimlerChrysler recently announced that they cannot find any mechanical reason that Grand Cherokees would spontaneously jump gears - a problem that several consumers have reported in recent months. Here's the story from Yahoo! News:

DaimlerChrysler AG says it can find no mechanical problems that would cause 1995-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees to suddenly shift from park into reverse.

The automaker's assessment is part of a response, due Wednesday, to questions posed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA began an investigation in July, saying it has received 48 complaints of an ``inadvertent rollaway in reverse'' from owners of 1995-1998 Grand Cherokees.

No deaths have been reported, but the incidents have led to 32 crashes and 14 injuries, according to reports to the agency. Most of the incidents reportedly occurred while the sport utility vehicles were idling with the gearshift in the ``park'' position.

In its response to questions from NHTSA, the automaker said in a written statement it would ``continue to explore whether ergonomic or other differences may affect the rate of complaint.''

DaimlerChrysler said it also has commissioned a study to further explore the problem, focusing on the difference in complaint rate for the 1998 model year and other model years.

Since the 1999 model year, Jeep Grand Cherokees have been equipped with a different transmission.

The automaker said it also is examining how the driver interacts with the vehicle. It says NHTSA has acknowledged the interaction is a critical factor in accidents like those under investigation.

I own a 1994 Grand Cherokee. Purchased new, am I am the sole driver. It has normal use, no hitch. I have complained over and over, that it thrusts in reverse. Eventually the dealership treated it as the recall above, putting on that kit. It still thrusts. If they look at it, they have always said, they don't see the problem. Meanwhile I have to keep the brake pedal strongly depressed, when I shift it to reverse. Other people in car with me, startle. "What the heck is that?!" I rent cars, have driven other cars. None of them ever do this in reverse? This is my second transmission before there was 50,000 miles on the car. Warranteed exhaust replaced twice. Now it's cracks in exhaust manifold. The engine only month new, developed a loud sound. People react, it sounds like a diesel. Dealership put me on a list, claiming they had replaced engines only for those to develop same loud noise. Then we were on a class action,( years, and nothing resolved). There is definitely an engine/ transmission/ exhaust system, "problem". But, Chrysler claims they don't see it. Then suprise some kind of recall a couple of years later. It's ridiculous that manufacturer can sell you a $26,000.00 vehicle, that plummets in value a month after you own it. Due to inferior parts they already knew about. Then you have to keep spending hundreds to try and keep vehicle running. Not normal upkeep, but, related to their shortcomings. I would never trust them again.

I drive a Grand Cherokee, and I sell them. I made a observation on a few occassions. I have noticed that if you don't get the shift lever quite all the way into the park position, and you let the button out on the shift lever, the Jeep will go into the reverse position. I have observed this when I have been a hurry. When I started to get out of the vehicle it went into reverse. I have been selling Jeeps for approximately 16 years. I have been moving Jeeps around alot during that time period. It's happened to me hurrying around to pull a vehicle up while a customer is waiting. I wonder if this is a possible explanation. Have these cases all involved going into reverse? Most vehicles have had these claims made against them at one time or another. I wonder if they aren't just driver error. As I mentioned I sell Jeeps, and for the largest Jeep dealer in the state of Minnesota. We are not hearing reports of runaway Jeeps from our customers. I work for Park Jeep at (800)279-5337. Happy and safe Jeepin!

here is my comment: We own a 96 GC. This past summer my wife was backing the jeep and stopped leaving it idleing in park. She walked around the back to the passenger side of the jeep. Suddenly the jeep started backing up. The wheels were turned and the front tires nearly ran over her. It continued backing around our house somehow missing everything. Our son jumped in the driver side stopping it just before it hit our house. We were not aware of other jeeps doing this same thing.
