MiscellaneousChrysler Creates Jeep Product Team

Chrysler recently realigned their development teams and in the process created the "Jeep Product Team". If you thought that there had been one of these all along, you'd be wrong. Previously, development teams were organized by platform, regardless of the brand. Chrysler is betting that with a dedicated Jeep brand team, vehicles will be more Jeep-like.

From Marketing Daily:

CHRYSLER IS SHUFFLING ITS PRODUCT development teams so that the engineers dreaming up the vehicles are thinking brand as much as vehicle platform.

Explains a spokesperson at the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company, which last year split from Daimler, "it has been until now platform-based, so there were teams for body-on-frame vehicles [e.g., trucks] like Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Durango, Ram and Dakota. And there were teams aligned with front-wheel-drive vehicles."

He says the change allows for "a combination of brand focus and customer focus, while at the same time focusing on commonality and timing."

The new organization creates a Jeep Product Team, whose vehicle-development efforts will be focused on evincing the Jeep brand, including parameters usually reserved for marketing communications: strong, iconic, heritage and loyal customers.

I think Mike should head the JEEP Product Team and all of us should be on it. We could simply have ongoing meetings through this Blogosphere and get a paycheck from Chrysler on the side. Hell, we put way more thought into JEEP's image & future products than they seem to, and we're full of it ideas, that is...

I don't see why they couldn't put the Gladiator on a Dakota platform and build it almost exactly as the concept.

They could build the JT as well and would have far higher sells between those three than they have between Dakota/Nitro/Compass sales. If for no other reason than to increase their bottom line.

Hopefully, this Jeep-only product team will be Jeepers at heart and will see that. As opposed to a bunch of Chrysler guys whom Cerberus told "Okay. You... you... you... you... & you. Put on these JEEP t-shirts. Now, you're the official 'Jeep-doods.' Go try and understand that Jeep-thang..."

Maybe this will mark the beginning of some really good improvements. An ORT program. Jeep-only dealerships. A Wrangler based pickup. Etc etc...

...which explains how we got the Compass & Patriot (from the Caliber)...
...and a Caravan engine in the JK...
...and the Nitro R/T 4.0L-V6 engine in the Pacifica and Town & Country (but not the JK)...
...and the Nitro-clone of the Liberty...

And, somehow, the one vehicle we all WANTED in the lineup --the JT-- couldn't be borrowed/shared from the Durango or Dakota platform(s)?

The only Jeep that I wanted was the Gladiator diesel with 6 speed manual. I do not want a Durango/Dakota based Jeep, I want a wrangler based pickup.

I'd prefer a JK-based JT, too, but either way, it'll sell. My point was, if Chrysler was intent on having "platform-based" product teams, then at least we could have gotten a JT out of the deal...

Agreed.

Meanwhile back at the farm... GM is giving us a H3 based pickup.

Good pics. I've been waiting for that one... I wonder what the price will be? The base H3 is $30K. The Alpha (V8) is around $40K. If GM prices it at $35K, it will just be a low volume Avalanche that most people pass on...

If Jeep can get off their a$$ets and fire out a JT at ~$20-25K, it should crush the H3T in sales numbers... I'll even take the "hearing aid beige" with the CJ-retro-looking white steel wheels! That's cool enough for me.

The h3t looks useless, too big and heavy looking, heck the motorcycle on the picture doesnt even fit.

Step One: ditch the Patriot
Step Two: ditch the Compass
Step Three: Build the JT
Step Four: Put a Hemi in the Wrangler
Step 5: Have me as a customer for life.
seems simple dont it?

I am afraid we will not see the Compass go away anytime soon. The plant that builds them could not build enough Dodge Calibers and Patriots to keep the doors open. I could see getting rid of the Compass only if the Patriot sales took off and the Compass sales tanked. As long as they keep selling Compass's they are going to keep making them until their 5-6 yr product cycle is up.
They have too much of an investment to just stop making the Compass because some people just don't like it.
Some could argue that it would be worth getting rid of just because of the damage it may be doing to the brand image and that could be far more than real dollars it would loose by discontinuing it.
I don't know. Tweek the Patriot some and I think it fits ok into the Jeep lineup.
