The Jeep Grand Cherokee was the 12th best selling vehicle in the United States during the month of September, 1999, as reported by the automakers. Overall sales of the top twenty vehicles were up 7% while sales of the Grand Cherokee was up over 35% to over 225,000 units during September, 1999. The only SUV ahead of the GC on the list was the Ford Explorer in 5th place - over 318,000 were sold during the same period. The top selling vehicle was (as always) the Ford F-series pickup. You can see the entire list here.
The Jeep Cherokee was named the most fuel-efficient large sport utility vehicle, getting 18 mpg to 24 mpg (29 kpg to 38 kpg) by the EPA among model year 2000 vehicles. The Honda Insight, a hybird gas/electric car, was the overall most efficient vehicle, getting over 70 mpg! Other category leaders include the Mazda 626 which scored highest in the mid-size carcategory, and the Toyota Avalon which was the most fuel efficient large car. The auto industry's least fuel-efficient vehicle, according to the EPA, was the Ferrari 550 Maranello, getting just 8 mpg (13 kpg) in the city and 13 mpg (20 kpg) on the highway.
