Autoweek.com is reporting that a diesel engine that is in development for Mercedes might make its way into future Chrysler minivans.
The Chrysler group is strongly considering selling diesel-powered minivans in North America as early as 2010.
"We're contemplating it," said Jason Vines, Chrysler's chief spokesman.
Talk of a diesel minivan is another indication that Chrysler is looking at a broad lineup of diesel-powered cars and light trucks in a few years. A Mercedes-Benz diesel engine under development will make it possible to meet U.S. emissions requirements.
MarkH, who submitted this news item to us added:
Well, Mike, that's just great. Maybe after debugging Mercedes diesels in Chrysler minivans, DCX will transplant them into the new Wranglers... Why not continue the JK's minivan powertrain heritage?

![]() Don't be too quick to assume that the diesel engine which might be used in some of these vehicles is going to be an "Americanized" Mercedes. A new series of Cummins engines ("little brothers" to the Cummins engines offered in Dodge Rams) is due to come on line in 2010. I, for one, would have more confidence in the quality and performance of a Cummins engine than in that of a Merecedes.

![]() thank god! some sane people on here! the engine in the jk is perfectly fine for what ever u are going to do to (or in) the new jeep. when i drove one, (took a poor salesman on a 40 minute ride and through 3 different states) i didn't feel any lag or sluggishness from the engine at all. i once asked the salesman if i could romp on it a little at a stop light and the tires broke free easily. he then promptly told me to take it home.

![]() I admit, I've been an incessant whiner of the "new" 3.8L-V6 in the JKs. IMHO, it's FAR too (for lack of a better term) "smooth" to be in a Wrangler. That "smoothness" has a real wimpy feel about it, and I miss the low end grunt of the 4.0L-I6. Wah, wah!!
![]() I'll probably get over it eventually, because almost everything else (including the price) of the JKs is excellent. ![]() I'd sure like to see someone add some good bolt-ons & wake up that 3.8L engine with some more ft-lbs! Aftermarket & Jp magazine, are U listening!? ![]() I'm sure most of us would forgive a Mercedes diesel transplant from a Chrysler minivan (yuck...) as long as we get some good grunt back in return. ![]() |

![]() I like markH's comment because you know that even if they drop a super-reliable, fuel efficient, clean-burning, torque-laden diesel into the minivans and then put it into the Wrangler people will whine it is a minivan engine.
Get over it people... Jeep has used all sorts of engines and drivetrains over the years... sourced from everything from Buicks to Renaults to minivans. |
