MiscellaneousInfo on DCX new fleet of V6s
Posted by CanJeepYJ on 2006/8/1 13:20:44 (1976) reads

Earlier this month it was reported that DCX would be discontinuing their family of V6s to make way for their internal family of V6s, code-named Phoenix engines. These engines should be ready by 2010 and most of the current engines being fazed out between 2012 and 2015.

Here is a list of the displacement of the engines along with which vehicles that will inherit each engine.

1... 3.0L V6 base Phoenix (next gen LX, J1, L2, R2)
2... 3.0L V6 premium Phoenix (L2)
3... 3.3L V6 base Phoenix (current gen JS Avenger/Sebring, next gen RT Minivan)
4... 3.3L V6 premium Phoenix (current gen JS Avenger/Sebring, next gen RT Minivan)
5... 3.6L V6 base Phoenix (current gen JS Avenger/Sebring, current and next gen KA Nitro, next gen KK Liberty, next gen RT minivan, next gen LX, Grand Cherokee current and next gen, next gen Commander)
6... 3.6L V6 HEV Phoenix Engine (next gen RT minivan)
7... 3.6L V6 premium Phoenix Engine (current and next gen LX, next gen RT minivan)
8... 3.6L V6 PZEV Phoenix Engine (next gen RT minivan)
9... 4.0 V6 base Phoenix (next gen Pacifica, next gen NE Dakota, next gen Ram, next gen KK Liberty, current and next gen KA Nitro, next gen LX, next gen Grand Cherokee, next gen Commander, next gen JL Wrangler)
10... 4.0 V6 premium Phoenix (vehicles unknown)

Notice the next generation 4.0L will be going into the next generation Wrangler, codename JL. The next generation Wrangler should be out by 2015.

For those complaining about the long wait for a bigger engine in the JK:
1. The 4.0L V6 won't be going in the JK; it's slated for the JL (next-next-gen Wrangler).

2. You might want to drive the JK with the 3.8L V6 before deciding that more power is needed.

OK, so we have to wait 8 years for a better engine in the WRANGLER. And it's already looking like a better engine will be needed.

Understand, with a heavier WRANGLER & "stretch-WRANGLER" for MY2007, the 3.8L V6 MINIVAN powerplant with its <10% HP & ft-lbs peak increase is not really greeted as an "improvement" by enthusiasts for a vehicle that's supposed to be the ICON of the Jeep brand. It's looking like a mistake before it even hits the showroom... but as we agree, the final vote will be cast with a test drive.

By the numbers, its performance looks like a breakeven, not an improvement, to me. We'll see...

For Christ's sake, the Saturn Vue grocery-getter even has a 250HP V6 ...and that's not even a competitor...

A better comparison is the Toyata FJ with 239HP/278ft-lbs... which is a competitor...

A MINIVAN powerplant!? What were the suits thinking?

But the Pacifica is much heavier then the Unlimited, where they have the same engine.

I can imagine that the 3.8 will be a fine engine. The only problem is this connection to it being found in minivans.....jeep people don't like the idea of this.

For the Pacifica, the Chrysler website (U.S.) lists ONLY the 3.5L V6 MPFI 24-valve engine with 250 HP (@6400 RPM) & 250 ft-lbs torque (@4,000 RPM) ...still WAY better than the 3.8L V6 MINIVAN engine.

That goes even further to make my point that there were better engines readily available that DCX could have chosen for the JK & JKL. Thank you.

Well, to maybe piss you off even more....the Pacifica will be getting rid of the 3.5L in favor of the new 4.0L.

Engine choices (for 2007 models) will be the 3.8 and 4.0.

8 years to wait until MY2015, for a 4.0L V6 engine with sufficient HP & torque... Hmmm... Couldn't just use that (aluminum block) Nitro 4.0L 255HP 275 ft-lbs V6, could they?

In the meantime, I hope that torque band is really really wide on this grocery getter 3.8L V6, or DCX has a lot of pain coming in the press reviews... and on this forum

Maybe a diesel option will start looking good...

I'm just anxious for the aftermarket to catch up. I'll like it more with a trail jammer and a cat-back system. Maybe even new headers...

Or perhaps I'll just save up for a supercharger. Wishful thinking.
