From Jalopnik:

The Liberty-based soft roader will undercut its Jeep cousin, with a base MSRP of $19,225 for the two-wheel-drive SXT ($20,735 for 4WD); the midrange SLT starts at $22,635 ($24,145 4WD).

...snip...

The '06 Liberty ranges in price from $21,290 to $26,190.

Since when is the Grand Cherokee or the Commander a truck based SUV? They're not body-on-frame vehicles like a truck. The only truck based SUV in the Jeep lineup is the Wrangler and now the Unlimited.

I have been thinking lately about the Jeep lineup when the new Unlimited, Liberty & Patriot comes out. You will have the Patriot, Liberty, Unlimited, Grand Cheorkee and Commander. All four doors.
Remember when there was just the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee to choose from if you wanted a family four Jeep. This is good for the consumer as we have lots to choose from, more than ever but they must be planning on going after a lot more market share because these vehicles are going to steal customers from each other. People that may not have considered a Wrangler before because of size and would have bought a Liberty, GC or Cherokee will now have the option of the Unlimited also. I think the Patriot is going to be a big hit and could steal customers away from the Liberty. It the new Liberty looks like a smaller Commander then it could steal customers from it. Over at GM they say they have no plans for a next generation TrailBlazer and at Ford the next Explorer is up in the air. Both truck based SUV's like the GC and Commander. With sales of truck based SUV's on the decline I wonder if they are planning a way to phase out the GC when it's life cycle is over in 4 or 5 years. The new Liberty is going to be bigger than the current model and I wonder if sales of mid-size truck based SUV's continue to fall they are planning for life with $3 plus fuel.
Just my thoughts.
I love my Commander though.

All very good insights. There can certainly stand to be far fewer truck-based SUV's on the road. I'm quite pleased to see people buying crossover soft-roaders instead of bigger SUV's, simpy for the safety concerns caused by too many people driving cars far bigger than they can realistically handle. It would be nice if the only people that bought large pickups & SUV's were people that would use them for their originally-intended purposes of hauling, towing, and rough-roading instead of so many being sold as grocery-getters. I think it would be nice if there were no more luxury SUV's, if the large SUVs were utilitarian as they once were, when the AMC Cherokee, Full-sized Blazer, International Scout, and Bronco ruled. If they phased out the GC and made the next-gen commander much less luxury, that would be a good thing IMO.

yeah, you can't really compare the '07 Nitro to the '06 KJ because they're different platforms. That's like comparing pricing on the Compass to the Neon.

Speaking of the Compass though, a fully loaded Dodge Caliber comes in about $3k less than a fully loaded Jeep Compass. The Compass has more available options though, which drive up the price. I wouldn't be suprised to see something similar with the redesigned Liberty vs the Nitro. I also have a feeling that the Nitro will be available in a more "base" version than the Liberty, ie: the Liberty will probably have more things standard, upping the price compared to the starting prices for a Nitro.

The Nitro's based on the new KK Liberty platform, isn't it? If that's so, then perhaps the '08 Liberty will be less expensive than the current KJ Liberty.
