Jeep® Brand Delivers the Mail with the New 2003 Jeep® Wrangler Right-hand-drive Postal Unit

Helping to ease the upcoming holiday mail load, the Chrysler Group introduces the new 2003 Jeep® Wrangler right-hand-drive Postal Unit available beginning December 2002.

"Jeep is the ultimate utilitarian vehicle. When Jeep returned from WWII, it went immediately into government agricultural and postal services. Jeep Wrangler returns to this unique postal market because it demands capability and versatility. As an off-road, four-wheel drive vehicle, Jeep Wrangler can handle the weather and the rough terrain, while still being fun to drive," said Jeff Bell- Vice President Jeep, DaimlerChrysler Corporation.

Available to letter carriers everywhere, the reintroduction of the Postal Jeep is welcome back to this historic segment. The Jeep Dispatcher (DJ3A) was the first Jeep vehicle built for the U.S. Postal service. Based on the Jeep Universal (CJ3A) introduced in 1949, the Jeep Dispatcher was built from 1955-64 and was equipped with a flat four engine to cut costs. The two-wheel drive Jeep Dispatcher featured a hard top and sliding doors.

The second mail Jeep Dispatcher (DJ5) model, produced from 1965-83, was based on the Jeep CJ5, which endured as a popular vehicle with improvements in power, axles, transmission and seating comfort. Jeep CJ5's exterior styling also featured a rounded body contour.

Prior to the 2003 Jeep Wrangler right-hand-drive announcement, the last Jeep to be sold in the postal segment was the 2001 Jeep Cherokee, which is now discontinued. Jeep 4X4 vehicles are favored by rural letter carriers throughout the country.
While sporting the same signature Jeep grille and round headlamps, as the historic postal Jeep models, the new 2003 Jeep Wrangler has some exterior differences. The Wrangler Postal Unit is a hard top with full metal doors and roll up windows to keep the mail secured, while the interior has a rear removable seat which creates ample space for bulk mail and packages.
Other new standard features of the 2003 Jeep Wrangler Postal Unit include the interior with front cloth seats and dual easy access as well as a flush-mounted AM/FM cassette radio with four speakers. Exterior features a Dana 44 heavy-duty rear axles with Trac-LokTM, P215/75R15 Wrangler all-terrain tires, full-face wheels and a full-size spare tire.

Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $20,253 excluding destination $610. This 4.0-liter automatic Jeep Wrangler Postal Unit will be available in all ten colors.

Jeep Wrangler is sold in more than 100 countries. The vehicle is built at DaimlerChrysler's Toledo (Ohio) Stickney Avenue Assembly plant.

here is my comment: With the changing demands of the rural carrier craft, I must say that the new RHD Wrangler is indeed an ideal vehicle for rural mail delivery with one major exception. It does not have adequate space to carry today's mail. Today's mail includes many more parcels, and larger parcels, along with heavier volumes of bulk rate mail. With more and more people in rural areas ordering goods over the internet and taking advantage of the valuable free delivery service that rural carriers provide, the limited space in the typical jeep-sized vehicle will soon be no longer adequate. Even on smaller auxiliary routes, a wrangler would not suffice. We just have too many parcels and too much mail for a wrangler. Why doesn't Jeep offer a RHD Wrangler Unlimited (an extended length version of the wrangler) which has more cargo room in it for parcels?

here is my comment Why did they stop making the Cherokee? We need vans, staton wagons, ect. Even on a small J route like mine a wrangler won't do!

great! but it is too bad Jeep didnt stick with the larger model... large routes that are in need of a new right hand drive will have to do without.. a wrangler wouldnt handle most of the mail carried on larger routes... especially at christmas time when large packages are being sent
which means many trips.... that we dont get paid for!

It is the right hand drive, standard and optional equipment that makes it a Postal Jeep. What else would you use it for? Plus, the price is not out of line for what is required for a postal vehicle. Thank you Jeep!!

here is my comment Rural carriers pay for their own vehicles, including gas, maintenance, taxes, tags etc. out of the 39 cents per mile they get. It has nothing to do with the price of stamps, and everything to do with the dedication to getting the mail delivered. Everyone interested in Jeeps should be glad they are making and selling them.

Sounds like a stock Wrangler with some
options, and right hand drive, not a special
"Postal Model". Unless the hard top is a fixed
steel top.

I purchased a right hand drive jeep (2003) and I have been thru 4 sets of front tires, in less than 2 years.(20,000 miles)
anyone else have this problem with their rhd Jeep. The tires wear on the outside edge and starts on the left tire first....I would not purchase another one of these because of this problem. The dealership can not seem to find the problem,,, they have done front end alignments but it doesn't solve the problem,
