It appears that all the complaints about the "plasticiness" of the Jeep Compass and Patriot interiors is not falling on deaf ears. Chrysler announced that portions of the interior will be made with different materials, mainly on high-usage areas like arm rests.
From LeftLaneNews.com:
The two Jeep models have been widely criticized for their interiors — mostly due to the use of cheap, hard plastic and less-than-stellar fit and finish.
The interior upgrade comes much sooner than the typical mid-life refresh as the two models have only been on the market for about a year.
Ralph Gilles, a Chrysler designer, also revealed that the Detroit automaker wasn't completely satisfied with the interiors at launch. "Even before these products were launched, we did some soul searching," Gilles told Automotive News.
The lackluster interiors have hurt the Compass and Patriot, making them the two worst selling Jeeps in the U.S. market.

![]() The cute looking headlights are the reason for the horrible sales. Put some square or Commander style lights on there and it'll sell. It just needs to be stronger looking. They took the round headlights a little too far. Leave the round lights to the Wrangler.

![]() I hate the Compass in its current form too, but I have to admit that it looks a lot better from some angles than others, and then only in a couple colors (black or Jeep green). It's an odd duck, for sure.
![]() I'm OK with the Patriot, just because it has enough boxy right (Jeep) angles, but it's way too expensive when optioned out. Who wouldn't prefer the new Liberty for about the same price? ![]() As far as correcting the interiors to make elbows comfy... that's pretty funny when I think of the "elbow comfort level" of my past CJs & YJs! Bone on sheet metal! ![]() I don't think anyone would be complaining about cheap looking interiors if these two Jeeps fulfilled their purpose... which was supposed to be inexpensive and very fuel efficient. Right now, they're neither. Modestly optioned for $20K+ and <30mpg hwy seems to have missed both targets and blurred the lineup... If they cost $15-18K, with few & Spartan options, and got 35mpg, it would fill the niche and no one would be bitchin'. ![]() |

![]() Regarding the Compass, in addition to noting that the interior is junky, ugly, and a good reason sales are lacking, I'd also like to point out for those that haven't noticed that the exterior is also very ugly. I know the exterior isn't the first thing that you notice when you look at a vehicle, but next time you see a Compass overlook the crappy interior and actually take a look at the exterior and you'll see it's an even bigger, smellier turd than the interior. Thank you.

Here's a novel thought, their sales suck because they suck as Jeeps. That being said, the compass is useless....maybe a SRT Ralleye version may help a little, but the're cheap...plain and simple. Sure the crappy interiors have a lot to do with it. Seriously, the Compass and to a lesser extent, were DCX's baby...and a proven failure. If you want to target cost concious individuals with a starter vehicle, make it more fuel efficient...that's what was attempted with the Compass. |

![]() It's about time we heard about this!! Doesn't Chrysler understand that silver plastic DOESN'T look like metal? They put it everywhere - in Dodge trucks, too. If you upgrade your Wrangler to Sahara from X you get a nasty silver plastic overlay on the dashboard instead of black. Even the knobs have that grey plastic on them! What were they thinking?
