Yikes! That's one of the worst headlines we've ever had to write!
Warranty Direct, an independent automotive warranty specialist company, released the results of a survey they recently conducted regarding the reliability of major automotive brands for vehicles 3-to-9 years old. They are ranked by the percentage of mechanical failures reported covered by each brand warranty policy.
Not a single U.S. brand made the top ten - the list was led by Mazda (8.04), Honda (8.90), and Toyota (15.78). Jeep was absolute last in the list with 46.35% of vehicles needing at least one repair under the warranty policy. Ouch.
In second-to-last place was Land Rover at 44.21%.

![]() The folks who conducted this survey must have omitted Fords from their research. I'll guaran-durn-tee them that I had infinitely more problems out of the Ford products than I've ever had with any of my Jeeps.

![]() With all the "reliability" and "quality" studies that have been reported over the years, most show a clear trend. The quality gap between the "worst" and "best" vehicles has closed significantly in the past few dacades and the differences are less significant.
The 46.35% number is misleading. For many years, Jeep had a 7/70 warranty and therefore, more repairs would have been covered longer by Jeep than by other OEMs. Better coverage would tend to inflate that number. That number also indicates that over 50% of new Jeep owners NEVER had to go to a dealership for any warranty mechanical fix. Considering the complexity of modern cars, that's pretty amazing to me! (Can U tell I work in the auto industry?) Anecdotal experiences with individual vehicles mean nothing with respect to that number. Read: statistically insignificant. You'll find plenty of Toyota & Mazda owners who have nightmare lemon stories, too. As long as it's covered under warranty and you enjoy the Jeep, who really cares?! If you'd rather be seen driving in a rice-burner, that's far more embarrassing than a ~50% chance of having to visit a Jeep dealership for a warranty problem! ![]() If you want to keep whining, go ahead, but it's a lot more satisfying to learn how to turn a wrench. ![]() |

![]() My '99 TJ automatic has had its transmission replaced twice, developed a cracked header, then the fuel pump went out at 80K, and still has electrical quirks that come and go. It has 122K miles on it.
I still love my Jeep, but I wish they would improve the build quality. That (and the weaker engine) is making me hold back on buying a new 2007 JK Rubicon. |

![]() I drive a 2000 Cherokee with 125,000 miles - one warranty repair - going strong. Wife drives a 2003 Mazda that's been in at least a dozen times under warranty....

![]() I was shocked when I read this article. I have a an 06 Rubicon Unlimited and it is great.I have 15,000 miles on it and no complaints. I had two other Wranglers before this one and they were great both had 150,000 when I traded them in. Wranglers are the best, they are dune buggies in the summer and snowplows in the winter. THEY ARE A DEPENDABLE , STRONG, FUN VECHICLE

![]() I agree with Jeeps having more repairs as compared to Japanese cars, but the Japanese cars' parts cost so much more and the insurance policies are also much higher. This makes it about even over the life of the vehicle.

![]() I agree based upon personal experience. I purchased a wrangler for fun and a toyota for work in the same month back in 2005, both new vehicles. My wrangler has had a recall and been in the shop for warranty issues 2 times. My toyota has had not one problem and both are around 19,000 miles....I still wouldnt sell my jeep as i luv it but would like to see reliability improved.

![]() what does everyone else think about the fact that this survey was done in europe on vehicles sold and driven in europe (or at least the article makes it seem so)? i think it would be interesting if a similar survey was done here in the states. i wonder if the outcome would be drastically different.

![]() Why is this shocking to anyone who owns a Jeep? I used the warranty 4 (!) times during the period. Leaking alxes and leaking engines top my list. Lets face it Jeep is a poor quality vehicle. I can say this because I own one. But I am not shocked, I knew this prior to my purchase, but reliability was not one of the factors I was looking at during my purchase.

![]() My other vehicle is a Mazda so we were discussing this same report on a Mazda group. The definition of "failure" being recorded here is a mechanical issue that Warranty Direct covers. What's interesting is that they have a wide array of policies that differ in levels of coverage. Given the cost of the Jeeps and Rovers, I do wonder if part of the reason they fared so poorly is that the owners had policies that cover more than their Mazda and Honda counterparts.
At least in the worst case all the times I need to service my Jeep will be offset by all the times I don't have to service my Mazda :) |
