Miscellaneous3 New Jeep Models to Debut by 2006

Move over Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee - the family is about to get much bigger!

Automotive News is reporting that in addition to the rumors about the entry-level and stretched-Wrangler Jeep, that DaimlerChrysler will also be debuting a high-end Jeep for the 2005 model year. Here's a snippet:

The Chrysler group plans to expand the Jeep line with a high-end nameplate that will share a platform with the redesigned Grand Cherokee.

The unnamed vehicle will debut in 2005 or 2006, a company source says. It will help the automaker fill its Detroit assembly plant, where the Grand Cherokee is the sole product.

A redesigned Grand Cherokee will debut next year as a 2005 model. There will be "another vehicle off of that platform," said the Chrysler group source, who asked not to be identified.

Asked if the unnamed vehicle would be priced above the Grand Cherokee, he said, "It could be, (but) I consider a Grand Cherokee a high-end Jeep."

...snip...

In addition, Chrysler hopes to generate more Jeep sales by producing derivatives from one or two platforms.

In July 2004, the first of several additional Jeep models is expected to debut. The two-passenger Jeep Scrambler will sit on a stretched Wrangler chassis with a 4-foot pickup bed. It was first developed for military applications outside the United States.

Jeep also will offer an entry-level SUV aimed at younger buyers that will be based on either the Compass or Willys 2 concept vehicles. A source says the entry SUV is scheduled for either 2005 or 2006 and will be based on the Wrangler or Liberty platform.

There are several models Jeep could bring out. An updated version of the FC models (possibly using the basic body and chassis of some Mercedes models), A new Grand Wagoneer - full sized with the Hemi and a 4.2l turbo diesel, a 2.7 td in the Grand Cherokee and the TJ. The squareheads that run the company don't seem to understand what N. Americans want.

Well, first off, I love the idea of bringing back the Scrambler, but with only a 4 foot bed? I mean come on, thats barely enuff room to throw Mickey Mouse back there. I would love the idea if the Scrambler came with a 7 foot bed, that way those of us with motorcysles could throw them in the back and head to the races as well as go four wheeling afterwards. Now, as for a spin-off of the Grand Cherokee, the only logical choice for Jeep is to bring back a full sized sport ute. They made a huge mistake killing the Grand Wagoneer in the early 90's, just as the market was taking off. As a consequence they lost the market to Ford (ohh, shutter to think of driving one of those) Chevy and Toyota(a bloated Mickey Mouse). What needs to happen is for Jeep to reingeer a big sport ute, maybe one that combines a little of both of the Grand Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee, with plenty of modern day technology, and to not mess around with under powered mighty mouse engines either. I want a choice of either a monstorously powerful gas engine and a diesel engine. Imagine the Cummins Diesel currently found in the Dodge Ram powering a big full sized Jeep.

Someone must be paying Daimler management off to purposefully do all it can to obliterate all that Jeep means and stands for. Bring back the Cherokee or make a vehicle that has the same to offer. The KJ might as well be called the Khia Jeep...

Disgusting.

here is my comment

I just bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and I love it! I had a Wrangler previous to that and the Cherokee is almost as fun but much more practicle. It's ashame that it was discontinued. I don't see ever getting a future Jeep unless they start building tough, innovative 4x4's again.

The HUMMER H3 should be interesting if my Cherokee ever dies but I doubt that it will.
