Concept/DemonstrationNew Concept Car - The Jeep Compass
Posted by mike on 2002/1/9 23:00:00 (2234) reads

The Jeep Compass, in its world premiere at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is a concept that feels at home in an urban environment while possessing the free spirit of a performance rally car. Inspired by the 1998 Jeep Jeepster concept and built on a Jeep Cherokee platform, Compass also offers a great combination of on-road dynamics and off-highway capability. Aptly named Compass, this latest Jeep concept will be pointing consumers in its segment toward tomorrow.

Chrysler Group's Pacifica Advanced Design Center in Carlsbad, California, was tasked to design a Jeep concept for "millennials," the next large, emerging group of consumers in the USA, now age 24 or younger. This group will outnumber the "Baby Boomer" generation. The Jeep brand has the third highest percentage of "definitely consider" of all brands among those buyers, as shown by the 2001 Vehicle Experience Study.

"Millennials are looking for an authentic, affordable vehicle to carry their friends and gear," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President of Design for the Chrysler Group. "They would prefer to have an exotic sports car, but those are not only out of their financial reach, but also don't offer enough room or flexibility. Knowing their preference for the Jeep brand, we created the Compass to exactly fit the bill: a capable compact SUV offering performance, cargo space and an attractive price."

Like a rally car, the two-door Jeep Compass has all-wheel drive, a short wheelbase and a low centre of gravity to hug the road. Compass features a lightweight steel "uniframe" construction and a 157 kW (210 bhp), 319 Nm (235 lb.-ft.), 3.7-litre PowerTech V-6 engine, offering ample power whether travelling on pavement, gravel, dirt or snowy city streets.

"The 'G Force Green' exterior paint is reminiscent of a military colour scheme," said Michael Castiglione, exterior designer for the Jeep Compass at Pacifica. "The exterior and interior colours convey a mature, honest integrity and are steeped in Jeep authenticity." Adds Pacifica's Jordan Meadows: "Even as the instrument panel looks like the cockpit of a fighter jet with technical dials and gauges -- and of course a compass -- we have kept the interior styling simple, uncluttered and functional."

Slot machine-style rotating controls operate all primary functions, while the gauges are reminiscent of traditional watch faces, and the air vents have classic aeronautical design. A sturdy grab handle covers the width of the instrument panel, as a visually strong "backbone" runs throughout the entire interior. This design element is mirrored by a full-length overhead console. The instrument panel features a multi-functional docking station with LCD screen.

Four bucket seats offer all occupants a command-of-the-road seating position, comfort and support. The seats are trimmed in green leather and Goretex with "G Force Green" soft touch grommets. The rear buckets fold to create a flat loading surface, executed in low-gloss stainless steel with integrated tie-downs in the side trim. True to its Jeep heritage, the interior features a moulded rubber floor. The spare tyre is incorporated into the rear hatch.

Jeep Compass conveys an expressive personality in its exterior design with details such as fender length running lights, and stainless steel brush guard and sill panels with the Jeep name. The roof features a unique diamond plate textured liner with integrated tie-downs, developed to take the abuse of any type of hauling.

"Our goal was to make the Jeep Compass rugged, durable and able to take a beating at all the typical scuff zones," Castiglione said. "You can play hard and be rough on this vehicle and its exterior holds up, giving the driver total freedom to go anywhere, do anything. After all, it is an authentic Jeep vehicle - right down to its seven-slot grille and trapezoidal wheel arches."

I am 10 years past the targeted age group but perhaps I still have the mind of a 24 year old? I like the compass primarily because it is so different from most of what I see out on the road (which is pretty much the reason I bought a Wrangler six years ago). Unfortunately there is one problem with the Compass - it is only a concept car and will most likely not go into production.

I think it's a great idea, fun little rally car. A little zip, a little room, and AWD. Just don't call a car a Jeep, bring back the Eagle brand and give it a simple name, maybe it could be the Eagle AMC?

There isn't a picture of the back of the Compass on this site, but you can see it here:

Seriously... are the designers at Jeep for real? I can't believe this is the best idea they could come up with... very reminiscent of the AMC Eagle, and THAT was huge success wasn't it? (insert sarcastic pause here)

Compass is just great, but produce it now and not in 2003. when every manufacturer will have one. But please give it 4 doors even if access is not perfect. And keep the shape and interior as is.

I saw the Compass while I was at the NAIAS earlier this month. Looks even better in person. Very nice lines. But I am glad there is a wide range of opinions on it. If "plain and generic" was the way to go, we would all be driving Camrys. Some will hate the Compass, some will love it. Myself, I have been looking for something with a "Rally" feel to it and this is a nice example. And how sweet would it be to see a Jeep, the true name in off road vehicles, take part in real rally races? Something a little sporty like this could do it. Don't worry about Jeep "softening" their image. They will always make true climbers like the Wrangler but like someone else mentioned, a wider variety of Jeep models will mean more buyers for Jeep products which means more money for Jeep (Chrysler) which, in turn, will (hopefully) mean they can keep making great vehicles. I hope they make it. Dip one of those babies in Gun Metal Gray Metalic and I will sign on the line now.

Utah, I'm assuming you're referring to me here:
age 56 (almost 57) and own 2 Subarus.

Yeah, I know what Subies are capable of, and I
would love to see Jeep take a crack at that
market. It's wide open, and other manufacturers
are sure to join in

Wow, a very different look from the backside. It looks to me like a beefed up Honda Civic or Mazda hatchback. Still, it's hard to imagine many people in the targeted age group having the cash to purchase these.

What is interesting is that there are people well past that target age group who have posted here saying they would consider buying one...so maybe Jeep will sell it to a different demographic then they thought. At car-truck the poll shows 47% of voters liking it...so it could be a winner.

If it can crack into the Subaru market...it could do very well. I see so many Outbacks and Foresters on the roads here.

This kind of concept from Jeep does not really upset me. It's new...going after a diffenet segment of the market...and it's not replacing a classic.

Make room for the surfboard racks!

AMC Fan brings up some very good points. If you look back over the last 50 or
60 years of automotive it has been the American auto industry that has been
the inventor or innovator of most modern automotive segements and first. The
Euporean and Asian automotive industries have a history of taking our first and
refining or improving on them. Compared to the U.S. industry they have invented far less. The most obvious to the readers of this page is the fact that
Jeep invented the whole 4x4 market over 60 years ago. It was the U.S. industry that created the whole pick-up and light truck market decades ago More recently it was Chrysler that invented both the Minivan market and the FWD performance market in 1984. Both the Caravan/Voyager and the Daytona/
Laser platforms were years ahead of the competition and both were built on the
same K-platform as were most of Chryslers vehicles of their day. Of course
back then the automotive press were forever bashing that way of building a product line. Fast forward to today were VW/Audi build something like 9 or 10
vehicles of the same platform and the same automotive press has nothing but
praise for them. To paraphrase AMC Fan, BULLSHIT ! If the U.S. auto industry
never existed and modern vehicle development was left to the euporeans or
asians I feel we would currently be tooling around in 1950's BMW and Toyota
technology.

Lay off the AMC Eagle. The Eagle was a vehicle whose idea was years ahead of
its time, look at Subaru's line up today. Both Audi and Volvo's all wheel drive so
called off road wagons could be direct decedents of the Eagle, but since they are foreign the automotive press loves them, Bullshit !

I'm 30 and I would buy one. I would certainly keep my TJ for serious off road fun, but I have a 40 mile commute and would love a jeep with better gas mileage and a little more zip.

Jeep isn't trying to wuss down the brand, they are just diversifying in order to appeal to a broader market and make more money. If Jeep is making more money, they can produce more specialty vehicles like the Rubicon and maybe a future 4 door wrangler.

Basically its a two door Liberty, but apparently without the true 4x4 drivetrains.
I like some of the other posters would like to see a soft top version, but then again even with a soft top I think it would look much better with that top down
than up. Overall I kinda like it. By Jeep standards its rather radically styled but, I like the look better than the Liberty. I think it would appeal to the demographics that Chrysler is targeting, the fact that its a two door helps. I
would like to know what the base price would be. If its suppose to be an entry level Jeep vehicle I would think it would be priced below the base Wrangler nicely equipped (as the advertisers like to say). One thing that really strikes me is the lack of ground clearance. I guess if its based on the Liberty you could
get one of those cheap two inch coil spacer lifts. When it comes to having an
entry level Jeep I like the Compass better than the Willy's concept.

Now to address Utah's all important question, " Would anyone over 25 buy one?" ?"

Not Me, I am sticking to my Cherokee, but I will say that if they were to built
it I would thoughly check it out and if I were totally blown away (which I doubt)
I would consider a purchase.

Yes! - but would that make it too much like the

Replacement Concept).

It's too bad more of these "concept Jeeps"
never get made ;^(

There must be a lot of 24 year olds in the USA with money to buy this special concept aimed at this generation-next demographic group. Here in Canada most 24 year olds could not afford the insurance on one of these...let alone the payments. The are all paying off their student loans and riding around on razor scooters :-) The ones with any cash are driving 10 year old Honda Civics with 5 grand worth of Car Audio and sub-woofers in them.

So my question is....is there anyone over the age of 25 who posts here, that would consider purchasing a Jeep Compass?

I like the idea of the covertible model that someone earlier mentioned. But...I would never purchase one.
