WranglerWrangler Unlimited Rubicon Unveiled

DaimlerChrysler officially debuts the Unlimited Rubicon

(from a DaimlerChrysler press release)

The Jeep Wrangler legend grows again, this time delivering Rubicon capability in a package Unlimited in scope.

With the all-new 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, Jeep celebrates the marriage of its ultimate off-road rig – the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon – to the new, roomier, versatile Wrangler – the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

“The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is the ultimate Wrangler and will attract a broad spectrum of buyers,” said Jeff Bell, Vice President, Jeep. “Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has been a tremendous success for the extreme off-road enthusiast, as well as for consumers looking for superior capability in everything they do. Combine that with the spacious Unlimited model, and the result is the best of all things Wrangler: the all-new 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.

“Jeep Wrangler is the icon of the Jeep brand,” Bell continued. “With the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, we have expanded the rugged appeal of the standard Wrangler to bring new customers into the fold, whether to conquer extreme off-road trails with added room to bring along gear, or to have the ultimate showpiece of Jeep capability – now with more space.”

Building on the success of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the all-new 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon takes extreme off-roading to the next level, while simultaneously adding 15 inches to Wrangler’s overall length. The result is 22.3 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second seat, versus 9.5 cubic feet in the standard wheelbase Jeep Wrangler. Of the 15 inches, 13 inches are added to the cargo area and two inches are added to second-row leg room – all while maintaining the Wrangler Rubicon’s legendary 4x4 prowess.

The 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model builds on the award-winning capability of Wrangler Rubicon with an off-road system that includes locking front and rear differentials, front and rear Dana model 44 axles, four-wheel disc brakes and a 4:1 low-range transfer case.

The all-new 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon features a Rock-Trac™ transfer case with 4:1 “low range” that slows vehicle speed in order to give the driver more control, while increasing the amount of available torque. In addition, front and rear axles include “air-actuated” Tru-Lok™ locking differentials which maximize traction.

The 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon features unique heavy gauge diamond-plate sill guards, 16-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels and a “Rubicon” graphic placed prominently on each side of the hood – a badge reserved only for Jeep’s ultimate off-road rigs.

The all-new 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon includes the innovative new Sunrider™ soft top, which includes a “sun roof” feature in addition to the full top-down option. This new soft top gives a second open-air option by folding the soft top back completely over the driver and front passenger to create a 45x23 inch sun roof opening — larger than any typical glass sun roof.

The Sunrider soft top includes larger deep-tinted side windows — 40.5x17.8 inches versus 31.3x21.5 inches on the standard wheelbase Wrangler -- giving second-row passengers a better view.

“Both Unlimited models attest to Jeep Wrangler’s unique positioning in the marketplace as one-of-a-kind vehicles with no true competitors,” Bell said. “No other vehicle can match the emotional connection with the outdoors and the excitement of driving with the top down, doors off and the windshield down on the trails.”

The 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is also available with a hard top that comes standard with deep-tinted rear windows, as well as rear defroster and rear window wiper and washer.

Jeep is taking their time w/the models, but it seems like they are basically building us what we want: Land Rovers. Don't punch me yet..we all want a Defender 90 size Wrangler, and if Jeep built one, they would sell like hotcakes. Defender only stopped selling in US due to lack of airbags...too bad for Land Rover. What we want is a 2 or 4 door optioned Wrangler in a 110-114"wheelbase w/ a full cage, heavy duty bumper/winch/suspension and a turbo diesel or
D.
Why can't Jeep offer what is already built. AEV built the perfect Jeep, minus the diesel. A pefect Liberty w/
D and offroad kit was at 2004 SEMA, AEV also builds perfect Cherokee, although the tires are too large for day to day use. If Jeep bilt the Rescue and packaged it right (Base to full rescue package) it would close the deal on everything from the Tahoe to the Landrover.

When is Diamler Chrysler going to have the brains and balls to put a turbo diesel hybrid into a jeep Ruby? Now that would be the ultimate off road vehicle because you could explore the back country without having to fill up all the time and the torque and power to go anywhere you want.

I just talked to my sales guy about my LJ rubicon on order since 11/09.

I got my VIN a month ago, but still D status.
sales guy says their computer is not accepting orders for LWB rubicons anymore. He is guessing there is a parts supply shortage or something.

But he found one with almost the same equipment 2 hours away(White w/khaki soft top and 6 spd)
Built 12/04/04

The only down side is that some wash rack/porter kid gets to put the first 175 miles on it.
I'll offer to go pick it up if they'll let me.

Great News! Finally got my Deep Beryl Green in at the dealer today and picked it up this evening.

I was able to use a $1,000 cash back incentive going through DCX financing, take advantage of the employee rate (my dad retired), and discount the soft top through my dealer.

Oh, and the company I work for is kicking in a $600 car allowance instead of providing a lease. Doesn't get much better than that.

Check out two pic's I posted at JeepsUnlimited.com

Latest update. "It's Alive!" My order went from D1 status to KZ. This implies that my order shipped Friday and is now on a railcar headed west. Sweet!

My dealer was able to print out a schedule showing me where it's at, Decatur Ill. yesterday, and that it should arrive in west Phoenix Dec 24t but won't leave the lot to arrive at dealer until 1/3/05.

You would think someone would want to get that order done before Dec 31st? We'll see.

I test drove an Unlimited Rubicon 6 speed at a Tucson dealership. Had everything I was looking for except security group and autodim mirror/compass.

Why did'nt I buy it? I'm like alot of you and have one on order (Oct 6th) and have been told ship date out of plant was Dec 17th. We'll see as my info has changed on a daily basis.

The test drive? Sweet!!! Over dirt piles with ease and the locker were not necessary. Of course I kicked them in! Just for the heck of it. The salesman let me pin stripe it a bit too!

Those of us waiting..... It's going to be..."awesome"!

I ordered my Rubicon on Nov.8th and then went back and ammended my ordered to add the dual tops - thanks to this forum. I had the ARB with a 8k ramsey on my 01 Sarhara and will be putting it on the Rubicon when it comes. It did sag the front of my 01 about 3/4 inch but I also had a base plate up there to pull the Jeep behind a motorhome. So the sag is not an issue for me. Does anyone know when the 6 disc radio will be made available? I heard 12/26....
My dealer is giving me 15,100 for my 01 with all the options (5 speed, black) and 35k miles anybody want it for 15.2?!

There's a good discussion at a forum you might want to check out:

If that doesn't show up, go to the Jeeps Unlimited dot com webpage...then Forums, Wrangeler and do a search for "Unlimited Rubicons on Hold?"

Good luck!

Yeah, i had to literally toss a coin between khaki and white. Although the silver is nice too. I like the molded half doors but not the price. I'll probably wait till I find a cheap used set. What's the word on LJ lifts? I'm up in the air between 2" spacers, or 3.5"ish springs. It's more about looking proportional than making a monster rig since the biggest tires I run are 31s.

New for 2005 is a 6-Speed manual transmission. It's the only way ot go...especially on the Rubi. In my opinion, the auto is sluggish and rough-shifting. The new manual has a very low 'granny' gear that should really help in tough situations. The Dual top option was made available for order as of Nov. 8th. First day of production for all 2005 Rubicon Unlimiteds was also Nov. 8th. I don't know how the holiday season will effect order times. From my experience, it could go either way. SOMETIMES, production is actually increased just prior to the holiday break to help relieve the backlog of after Christmas production. Unfortunately, it can also delay by a couple weeks or so...depending upon when your order falls in the schedule. I ordered my Rubicon Unlimited on Nov. 12th.

here is my comment I ordered the Rubi Unlimited on Oct.13 in Eureka,Calif. Should have it by Xmas. No hassle from dealer. If you are gonna buy a Wrangler and have the money Rubi is the only way to go. What jacks up the price is all the sissy options people seem to need on their jeeps. Leather steering wheel on a Rubi? Automatic trans?

OK...Here's the latest official word straight from an actual engineer at the Jeep Wrangler production line:

Dual Top group for Unlimited and Rubicon Unlimited will be available "sometime in December of this year).

Radio with in-dash 6-Disc CD changer will be available December 26th of this year.

I called because the dual top issue was keeping me from ordering my new Rubicon Unlimited. It's just a bonus for me that the radio I hoped for is coming out in December as well.

Hang in there!

Is Jeep slowly building what will end up being the Dakar concept step by step???? If so, marketly speeking, it`s a smart move. Make it longer ( people will sell their swb for it ) make it a Rubi ( people will sell their Rubi, their regular unlimited, and maybe some of those that hadn't made a move yet). What's next??? I say 4 Doors, then what??? I say a diesel engine.

So , by my calculations, I should be trading My 99 Sahara for an Unlimited 4 doors diesel rubi with dual top by 2008.

I don't know what all this means exactly, but I'm not expecting to see one myself until the first of the year.

I just bought my first Jeep. 2004 Wrangler Unlimited black/black and very happy with it, except for the POOR gas mileage 13/16. My Towncars & Limousines get 15/24 with a full load. But that is not my issue. I just received my sunrider soft top from the dealer and installed it with no problems. I took it for a drive to the mountains and the rear curved rigid corner on the top has gone flat and the windows really suck in when moving above 50mph. Is this normal on jeeps with soft tops and is there anything that could be done so the windows wont get thrashed other than taking them off.

I think you're right about the timeframe for the
Rubicon Unlimiteds (mid-January) but in my
case I think it's more about the 2 or 3-week
production break than the dual top. I ordered
dual black tops and have been assigned a
VIN number (as of yesterday). I was told to
that a production date should be assigned any
day.

I have seen dual top Rubicon (SWB's) at a
dealership; they put the hard top on and the
soft top is in 2 boxes in the back seat.

I don't know if the color you ordered might
have something to do with it or not...maybe...

Talk about anticipation! I wish I'd get it before
Christmas so I could do some 4 wheelin' over
the long weekend BUT realistically if they did
ship it before Christmas we'd be talking about
the day or two before (22nd or 23rd) and
there's not enough time to break it in easy
before the weekend then anyway.

White w/grey hard top and black w/ grey soft top, both automatics. The sales guy said that they aren't doing the dual tops because , due to the sunrider mechanism, they cant mount the soft top with the hard top in place. Also , all the first ones are automatics. The 6 spd batch may be starting today(12/06/04) but the factory closes down for the last 3 weeks. I heard that ,from begining to end ,it takes 10 days to build. Any assembly workers out there with some tidbits?

If you want to build/price an Unlimited Rubi, visit our friends at Jeepwarehouse:
http://www.jeepwarehouse.com/

Bill Shoemaker over there seems very knowledgeable and very helpful.

Looks like Jeepwarehouse is offering a nice price on Unlimited Rubicons. The dealers in my area tell me they will not discount the Unlimited Rubicons.

You should be able to put in your order now, but as someone else said, "job one" starts in November. (Job one means when they begin first builds), so you will have to wait a bit to get your new toy.

The last I heard, you still can not order the vehicle as a dual top setup. There is some issue with installing the softop and hardtop together. Many dealers are willing to order your additional top, but I don't think you will get a big savings (maybe around 10% off list).

I took a quick look at one recently and didn't notice any of the pre-drlled holes to install the "trunk" that exist on the SWB models. It would be nice if and when they or someone like Bestop or another aftermarket company makes the height close to or even w/ the the height of the rear gate. Secure storage is vitually non existant - I can barely fit my backpack w/ a laptop now. An Unlimited would be nice when I go to replace my existing ride but only if there is a "trunk" or something like it. My ideal situation would allow me to be able to fit a set of golf clubs back there but I'm not sure there'd even be room... anyone have an Unlimited that knows?

I was on the Jeep sight and it is possible to build the 2005 vehicles; I don't see an option to price out an Unlimited Rubicon. Does anyone know when the release date is?

Also, I was told by a dealer that the two top option was available on the Unlimited; it appears only available on the X and Sport Wranglers. Any information on that?

1. I agree about the whiners.

2. I noticed this in the article:

"and a “Rubicon” graphic placed prominently on each side of the hood – a badge reserved only for Jeep’s ultimate off-road rigs."

Does this mean that more Jeeps will be Rubiconized in the near future? If so, cool!

If I hear one more thing about those flares, and top... I'm gonna explode!

Keep Jeepin'!

Everytime I go to this site I see mostly negative comments. You guys are nothing but a bunch of cheap, whining cry babys. Get a life and get a job so that you can buy a new vehicle. You wanted a long wheel base ruby and they gave you one. Now your not going to buy it?

Jake - First of all; congrats on buying your first Jeep! Yes, you're right...Wranglers aren't known for great mileage. Due mainly because ot the gearing and drivetrain configuration; but also becasue of the fact that they are about as aerodynamic as a cinder block! Most of us feel that the trade-off for a terrific off-road vehicle is worth it though. Also because of the aerodynamics, the soft top is a little noisy...to be modest. There is a soft-top liner that is available for SWB models, and is coming out for LWB models, that should greatly improve the noise and temperature insulation quality though. It's a quilted liner that uses Velcro to adhere to the inside of the top. I believe it'll work on the soft and hard tops. Just the thickness and weight of it should also help a little with the thrashing and flapping too. I believe that Slick Tops offers one...I'll find out for sure.

- That's good to know that you received a VIN# yesterday! That means that it looks as if whatever problem they were having with the Sunrider Soft Top and the hard top must have been resolved. You saw SWB Rubicons with dula tops on the dealer lots becasue they didn't have the new sunrider soft top on them. It's my understanding that that's where the problem lies. If you're right, and the problem is solved, then it probably will be the break that causes the most delay and I will see my Rubi mid January or so. Thanks for the update, and enjoy your first Jeep...there's nothing like them! I'll update as I get more info. You're right, the anticipation factor is killing me.

Everyone that ordered the Dual Top option should check with their dealer for a confirmed status on your LJ. I went by my dealer last night and the DC system as of yesterday 12/11/04 says that it is in BG status due to the Dual Top option. On hold for that option. Status - TBD. I'm hoping it will be resolved soon. I believe the earlier post was right about the fit of the hard top over the soft top, etc. Please post any new info you guys find out. As it is now, I don't see any dual top Rubicon Unlimiteds hitting dealers until at least mid January - and I think that may be optistic! Grrrrrr!

Thanks for all the good info guys. I ordered an Impact Orange Unlimited Ruibcon w/the dual top option (black) and every option except the smoker group and block heater.

I placed my order on Nov 18th, and am in D status now but don't have a build date - dealer expects one in the next couple days though. He said DC takes a 2 or 3 week production break around Christmas that I'll probably fall on the far side of, so we're looking first or second week of Jan.

Best part is, I started a new job on Nov 29th and they have a DC discount program - 1% under invoice! Dealer was a little surprised but had no problem with it really.

It's gonna be my first jeep, wanted one forever and can't wait for that uber-pumpkin to show up! Thanks again for all the info, keep jeepin!

I will have to check what my order status was but the dealer added the dual top and I got a new print out of the order. When we made the change the color of the hard top went to black and it stated the soft top was a matching color. The order code was different than the grey top. The computer did not allow for any other color in the dual top...? The body color is imapct orange. Is this consistent with your experiences? Thanks for the phone number. I will be checking the status of my order today as I really would like to get scheduled before the shut down as well! My dealer ordered the radio from parts and charged me 400 dollars.

I stopped by my dealer two days ago and nothing has changed. I did get a number from Jeeps technical support for DC customer assistance center. That number is 1-800-992-1997 and you can give them your VIN# or VON#.

They seem to have more info than the dealer. I called over a week ago and they saw a tentative build for my order DEC 3rd. When I called earlier this week to confirm the date was missing. Only "D" status. No date.

This am I called and was told that Dec 14th now looks like the build date. When it is made and ready to transport, they will give you some T number. It is then you can track the shipping of your vehicle. You need that number but can be tracked at www.uprr.com

I'm hoping to see it shipping to PHX before year end. 2005 Deep Beryl Green w/ 6 speed. Fingers Crossed!

I don't think there's any way to track the order online. If there is, I sure wish someone would let us all know. I know I'm driving the sales guy nuts! I just wonder what effect the Christmas break will have on my order, if any.

Mark, Before you made the change to dual top was your order status "D"? This confirms acceptance of order at factory.

I put my order in Oct 6th for the 05 LWB Rubicon. It was a confirmed order with VIN# and VON# with D status about a week later.

Since then the dealer said I couldn't change my color request and today said they couldn't change the order to dual tops. I've got the hard top on order with a purchase of a soft top from the dealer when it arrives. More $ of course.

That's the other kicker... take my order, require a $500 deposit and then leave me hanging on a production date? When will they produce these???

My order was in Oct 6th, you'd think I'd be in the first production run.

I almost got white, but decided on the Lt. Khaki instead. I did get the dual tops though. I was disappointed that the half doors weren't an option too; but I think I'm gonna order the SAfari Doors from Quadratec.com instead. They look good and cost way less than after-market half doors (about $175). I'll have to get the adapter that lets the side mirrors mount to the windshield brackets though. Mopar hitch lists for $139. You can mount it yourself.

I hear ya! Silver was also a major consideration for me too. I'm looking into the lift situation myself. There area lot of options out tghere already, but I'm still researching the best way to go. I think a 3" is the way to go either way though. I won't run anything bigger than 33's, so I jsut need a little more clearance. I'm looking at an ARB Bull Bar with A WArn XD9000i, but I'm not sure if the stock RUBI suspensin can handle the weight without sag...still researching...

Also, is the Jeep E-V-E-R going to come with the spare tire carrier as standard equipment instead of bending the tailgate!

I had to go with "arizona" white w/ khaki since desert camo is not yet available. I was hoping the half doors were an option but no such luck. Also, you can't get a trailer hitch from the factory(dealer installed $400+).Have you seen the camo seats in the TJ willys? Way cool!
