WranglerJeep TJL Training for Duty

A major online site has an image and some info about the long-wheelbase TJ training for duty.

Motor Trend's Truck Trend recently posted an article about the U.S. Military's efforts to evaluate specially modified commercial vehicles for military use. Among those being evaluated is the long-wheelbased Jeep Wrangler. Here's a snippet:

[Mark] Smith, who was commissioned to design this Severe Off-Road Track (SORT) and has been associated with the legendary Rubicon Trail since the start of the Jeepers Jamboree in 1952. He's built 4x4 courses for DaimlerChrysler, as well as for other purposes, including military training.

This two-mile-long track on a 20-acre plot of ground is unique in a number of ways. It'll be used by both Army and Marine Special Forces for training purposes, as well as a permanent demonstration and evaluation track for military personnel, members of Congress and the Pentagon, and representatives of Federal Government agencies. The goal: to evaluate commercial vehicles outfitted for military and other back-country duty in an area within the national capitol region. The track was built with the help of the Navy Seabees for the new COMmercially BAsed Tactical Truck (COMBATT) program.

...snip...

The legend of the "Jeep" 4x4 began over 60 years ago when automotive manufacturers across America were challenged to design a compact, lightweight, highly capable vehicle for use by the armed forces. The successful Willys MB sprang from that development challenge. Since then, the CJ-2A and other models worked their way into the hearts of civilians, while new military Jeep vehicles followed. Notably, the M-38, M-38Al, and M-170 answered the call to action in all types of terrain, providing decades of dedicated service. Now, Jeep returns to its roots with a new military machine.

The Jeep Wrangler TJL mixes modern automotive technology with some of the same attributes the troops valued in the original Willys MB. An up-to-date take on the original "go-anywhere, do-anything" utility vehicle, the new TJL (long-wheel-based TJ) has been designed to meet the most challenging tasks and perform in the most adverse conditions. Its first tour of duty will be in Egypt.

Be sure to check out the entire article for photos and information on the Dodge Ram COMBATT and Jeep TJL.

Well, as one who has driven and lived with 1/4 tons and H-1's as well as M113's, M2's and M577's as well as fistv's in the field for extended times with my fist teams I'll take a Hummer any day of the week. The fact that it is enclosed, weather proof, warm in the winter and A/C'd in the summer vs a 1/4 ton and trailer that you freeze your butt off in winter, because it's a soft top 99.9% of commands require the soft top and doors to be removed when the snow stops which is OK for a while till you have to live for 4 or 5 days in the rain and wet butt from the straw stuffed seats. Nope, for the people that use them the H-1's were a godsend. Thats the comfort part, utility wise you can carry more equipment, access if faster, keep it dryer and cleaner, mount heavier weapons than a M60 and have better protection with the armoured versions. The diesel engine makes fuel acquisition in the field much easier, till the conversion was pretty complete mogas could be tough to find in some units. From use I really can't find any faults with the H's. As for that pic on the article that sure looks like a MB g wagon to me, not a jeep...

I think it would be cool if the Jeep returns to the US military.

here is my comment I think it would be a great idea for the Jeep to return to duty with our soldiers. I have owned several Jeeps and I don't think you could get a better quality or dependable vehicle.
