MotorTrend.com has the first pics that we've seen a cammo'd version of the 2008 Compass. It's not too much to look at, but it's good to know that there are some mules being tested out there. Here's a snippet:

While we had to travel around the world for the official unveiling, Jeep has been parading a heavily disguised Compass through the hills near our Los Angeles offices, allowing us to chart its trail to production. Fanatics deny that Jeep would ever allow the tank to hang so low in the rear, but welcome to a new world at the Chrysler Group, where they build Jeeps on Mitsubishi Lancer platforms.
You can check out the photos, but you'll have to sit through a quick commercial on the MotorTrend site before they let you in.

So the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot are all going to be built off the new Lancer platform? If so, that's the first I've heard of it. It was my understanding that the Caliber was a new platform... hence all the info on the Patriot and Compass talking about them being built off the Caliber platform, not a Mitsu platform (though I have heard rumors about a Mitsu-based Jeep vehicle in the past). Somehow I think MT is mixing old rumors with current info. It does appear that the production model will be even more boring than the concept though (no big surprise).

The Calibre is a new architecture. Perhaps, the Lancer will be redesigned to use the same platform, but I doubt it as DCX has sold all their stake in Mitsubishi. Motor Trend is not the most reliable when it comes to their future vehicle information.

Also, Brian_R, the Wrangler will most likely be priced from low $20's (for an X-trim model) to mid $30's (for Rubicon-trim four-door model). The Patriot and Compass will most likely be priced $15's to mid $20's.

I was hoping to see newer photos of the Compass but these photos are the same ones from over a month ago.

This definitely needs the bigger diameter wheels / tires, rear window spoiler shown on the Rallye concept. This version lacks any character in its design. The Rallye concept at least had some character to it and I think consumers will be sorely disappointed if they find that its design cues aren't at least available as a trim package.

Are there any spy shots of a production version of the Patriot out there?

They should name this one the BJ, for obvious reasons...

Let's face it, it isn't going to win any WRX rallies against the likes of a SUBARU WRX, a Lancer EVO, or an Audi Quattro, and it isn't going to conquer the Rubicon trail, either, so what EXACTLY is the role of this JEEP?

It could possible SUCK more than OOJ's YJ, but not by much, because it does have airbags.

What was wrong with the Jeepster concept??? That concept, if put into production, could have SPANKED the then Z-28, and would have been even more potent now with a HEMI in it, and it was RUBICON capable.

For that matter, whatever happened to the WILLYS concept? I would have much preferred that to a compass, or even a Patriot. It was supposed to become the SCOUT. hmmmm.....

Wow, built on a Lancer platform, that sucks bull kaka. It looks basically like the initial press drawings, etc. have suggested kind of weenieish.

As I've said before, they can build this crap, and call it a Jeep (even if we all know it is not a Jeep) and if they sell a ton of them they had damn well better be investing profits into vehicles (like the Gladiator) that can keep up the real Jeep legend. If not the marque is doomed and I certainly will have nothing more to buy from DCX.

You would think that if they built it on the Lancer platform, they could throw in EVO-type engine performance and acceleration. There has to be something that defines this vehicle from the rest, and I don't see it. I don't see them using this vehicle to use competitively (which would be a good justification for the model other than "expanding the lineup") and depending where the price point for the Patriot and the next-gen Wrangler lie, there might be 4 vehicles in the same price range.
