From a DaimlerChrysler press release:

After successfully implementing a new pricing strategy for the 2002 Jeep® lineup, the Chrysler Group announces the addition of a new Jeep Grand Cherokee model. The new Laredo Sport model is strategically placed in the heart of the Upper Middle Sport-Utility segment where Jeep Grand Cherokee competes.

"The award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee provides legendary Jeep capability with a new level of refinement for 2002," said Tom Marinelli, Vice President, Chrysler/Jeep Global Brand Center, DaimlerChrysler Corporation. "With our new Laredo Sport model, we'll attract new sport utility buyers in an extremely active part of the segment, where transaction prices range from $28,000 to $29,000."

The Laredo Sport uses the Chrysler and Dodge minivan eX formula announced earlier this year to create a well-equipped model at a great price. Standard on this 4.0-liter Power Tech I-6 model are premium features including leather seats, an Infinity® sound system and 16-inch wheels.

Arriving in dealerships by mid-November, the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for a two-wheel drive Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Sport model is $26,025, including $600 destination. The MSRP for a four-wheel drive model is $27,995, including destination.

"Because of its straight-forward nature, Laredo Sport will be extremely easy to shop and easy to buy, especially for the ever-increasing number of customers who use the internet throughout the shopping process," Marinelli continued. "Approximately 65 percent of Grand Cherokee buyers use the internet to gather information before visiting their local dealers to compare and make their purchase. With this initiative, we are offering customers an attractive, complete, high-value model in a critical part of the segment."

After successfully launching the all-new Jeep Liberty with a starting price well under $20,000, the Chrysler Group announced a new pricing strategy for its 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler models. The company reduced Jeep Grand Cherokee pricing $2,000 across the board, while making the 4.0-liter Wrangler more affordable with the all-new Jeep Wrangler X model.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is manufactured in Detroit, Michigan and Graz, Austria. Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wrangler are built in Toledo, Ohio.

Following is a full range of current pricing for the Jeep lineup.

Here in the Northwest, the advertised prices for Grand Laredos are below the fancier Liberties. When my XJ lease is up next near, I'm now thinking heavily of going to a low-end Grand Cherokee instead of a Liberty. Per Jeep's web site comparison, a Laredo with a 6 is lighter than the comparable Liberty. The Grand is also standard with SelecTrac, ABS, overhead compass, etc. I'm also concerned about what I've read about Liberty ground clearance. I'm not an extreme off-roader, but I've always liked the way solid axles walk over things. That plus more luggage room instead of less, if lease payments are anywhere close, I'm going for the Grand. If not solid axles forever, at least for the next three years!

Oh joy another luxury Jeep model. When will DC learn and produce a "sport utility vehicle" that you can use for utility! They should offer the Laredo Sport with all the basics, maybe even manual roll up windows! WOW WHAT A CONCEPT!!!!.... on a Jeep yet!!!! WOW!!!! . by taking away the XJ DC left a BIG HOLE in their lineup, the GC Laredo Sport could have filled that hole, but not with leather, 16" rims, and god knows what other luxury crap installed.

The people making the decisions at DC must be a bunch of stupid, greedy, ignorant fools! I don't see the need for leather in ANY vehicle much less a Jeep!

People are just too materialistic.... what no leather or power windows, or 400 speaker Infini
AP sound system.... that's not good enough for me. Done venting now...

I agreee with you XJ, the sport is only 4x2, why would you buy a jeep that is 4x2? But then again 95% of jeeps are 4x2. I bet yours is also a 4x2!! hahahaha, anyways, it goes to show that all jeep fans, like you, like minivans.

Joe Always Nos!

Once again I can't help but feel that Daimler has missed another opportunity.
The Sport sounds like another luxury model when what they need is a real off
road model. Leather interior, infinity sound system and 16 inch wheels do not
make an off road vehicle. I went to Camp Jeep 2000 and they had a yellow Grand there that had a little bit of lift, real off-road tires and serious bumpers.
Thats the grand model they should build. I can't remember what it was called
but, Grand Cherokee Renagade has a nice ring to it.
