Disguised Jeep photo showing the Jeep Commander?
Thanks to numerous readers for letting us know that the July, 2004 issue of Popular Mechanics (print edition only, so far) has a photo of a heavily disguised stretched Jeep in its "Detroit Spy Report" section. Here's a snippet of the text that goes along with the small photo:
This appears to be a stretched Jeep Cherokee prototype in the full armor. But what you see may not be what Jeep has planned. In fact, this is a new design for Jeep. Despite that over-the-top cover-up, it's possible to spot a number of features that help indicate the vehicles true shape. First, if you look carefully, you se the angle of the windshield is more upright than that of the newly introduced Grand Cherokee.
The text goes on to mention the vehicles longer rear overhang past the rear wheels - indicating possible space for a 3rd row of seats. The Detroit News has the exact same photo - note that the caption of the photo says that it is indeed, the Jeep Commander. A snippet from the article says: The Jeep Commander is 4.5 inches taller than the popular Jeep Grand Cherokee and more square and upright, “bearing some resemblance to GM’s Hummer H2,” Bruynesteyn wrote. It will share the same underpinnings as the Grand Cherokee, but will have three rows of seats and should debut during the third quarter of 2005, he said.

I have a TJ, and will keep the TJ... but have a need for a larger second vehicle so the RESCUE would fit quite nicely in my driveway...
Would have to banish the Cherokee to the curb... would still keep it since it's paid for.

The RESCUE definitely should be built, but this is not it.

You can see it under the fabric cover. The upright windshield and very boxy. If you look close you can even make out the profile of the upright grill. The only thing that bothers me is the comparison to Hummer like Jeep is copying them!

i doubt also this will in any way resemble the rescue. the rescue was a boxy beefy off road beast, not a 7 passenger burb mobile. not a bad thing just not the rescue. i'm just happy thta jeep will have another vehicle to choose from, the unlimited is nice but the everyday guy that sees it on the road doesn't notice anything different...maybe the commander will be special in it's own way. look forward to more pics...

I'm sure we won't get something exactly like the Rescue, but if it has a Wrangler like front end with 4 doors that come off, I will be camping out at the dealership waiting for it to come out.

I'm not even totally sure that I like the Wrangler Unlimited. I have a TJ and one of the nicer things about it is that its so small that I can sneak inbetween rocks. I really hope that Jeep doen't sell out to the gas guzzling, soccer mom, SUV trend. Jeep was on the right track with the Rubicons and thats the type of vehicle I hope to see them develop further in the future

I remember reading in several different articles that the 7 seat Jeep was NOT going to be a streched Grand Cherokee but an new vehicle. I would say if the Commander has a Wrangler like front end and is boxy with fender flares we will have a winner. I believe that is what everyone really wants. Now, will we be able to afford one.......??

- The front and rear wheelwells aren't "Wrangler" like enough to be the RESCUE concept.
- The space between the rear door and the rear bumper is too long to be like the RESCUE concept.
- The space between the front wheelwell and the front bumper is too great to be like the RESCUE concept.
- The rear hatch is curved, like the Grand. The RESCUE was straight up and down.
- The windshield has curve to it, the RESCUE had a flat windshield like the Wrangler.
Don't get your hopes up.
This is nothing more than a stretched Grand Cherokee with 3rd row seating capabilities.
Not only that but this spy photo is old.
