The Toledo Blade is reporting that the Jeep Liberty has recently been reviewed by Consumer Reports and the results are not favorable.
The Toledo Blade is reporting that the Jeep Liberty has recently been reviewed by Consumer Reports and the results are not favorable. Here's a snippet: The Toledo-made Jeep Liberty isn’t recommended by Consumer Reports, much less on the magazine’s list of best new cars and trucks for 2002.
Instead, one of the Liberty’s competitors - the Toyota RAV4 - was named Consumer Reports’ best small sport-utility vehicle. That vehicle and two competitors - the Subaru Forester S and the Honda CR-V EX - come with recommendations in the magazine’s annual auto issue, which subscribers are receiving this week.
The magazine’s April issue gave the Liberty Sport with a V-6 engine an overall rating of "good" among small SUVs, ahead of the Suzuki Grand Vitara JLX+, Chevrolet Tracker, Nissan Xterra SE, and Kia Sportage EX. Besides the RAV4, Forester S, and Honda CR-V EX, however, the Hyundai Santa Fe GLS, Ford Escape XLT, Mazda Tribute LX, Saturn Vue, Land Rover Freelander SE, and Suzuki XL-7 topped the Liberty Sport in the overall ratings.
Consumer Reports, a leading magazine many people look to before buying a car, isn’t granting interviews on the Liberty, a spokesman said yesterday. A full report on the new made-in-Toledo vehicle is scheduled for the May issue.
...snip... On safety, Consumer Reports gave the Liberty an overall score of "good," and the SUV got the same rating for accident avoidance and crash protection. The SUV’s offset-frontal crash results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety were marginal, the magazine noted, and the government hasn’t done front-crash tests.
The magazine noted that the Liberty received the government’s highest rating for driver-side crash tests, indicating that no injury or only minor injury would be likely to occur in an accident.
Consumer Reports said the Liberty’s new 3.7-liter V-6 engine is "reasonably smooth but thirsty," called the ride "jittery," and noted that the interior is roomier than the Jeep Cherokee it replaced. The vehicle’s fuel economy is hurt by its hefty towing capacity, said Chrysler’s Ms. May. Be sure to check out the entire article.

I don't know much about the mechanics of the car and have alot to learn about the 2-wheel drive that can convert into a 4-wheel drive and other drives I don't know much about. It was important to me that this car could go anywhere, and by-gosh, it sure can!! I had a great time driving on the beach sands. I experienced a freedom, I had not felt in many years. It was so much fun, I laughed the whole time. I was reborn as a "rough-and-tumble" kid!!! I am definitely a jeep-kind-of-gal. It brought out the real me and I am thrilled with this car.

I have had it for 3 months and have not found anything I don't like about it. It is a very smooth riding vehicle and it is very comfortable riding in it, even people I know that have ridden in mine are impressed with the smoothness and power that it has and at how comfortable it is. I t also has a lot of safety features that are very good and they even thought about chldren when they designed it with the child restraint hook behind the seats. anyways I love my Jeep Liberty and I would not want to own something else. I love every feature about it. so I don't know what the gripe is with the person that wrote this ad. It is only their opinion NOT a fact!

Consumer Report's never has much good to say about Jeep vehicles. Consumer Report's most common comment about Jeeps are the lack of a smooth ride. But what Consumer Report's fails to realize is that it is the Liberty's less than smooth ride ( especially what even the current Wrangler owners experience ) that gives the Liberty it's unmatched stock off road prowness over other small SUV's. The Liberty was proven on the Rubicon trail. I wouldn't drive a RAV4 through a pile of wet leaves! Consumer Report's should take some of those other competing tin cans on the Rubicon trail and rate that.
There are SUV's and there are Jeeps. Jeeps have been around long before the phrase SUV. The SUV term was created when the Jeep was already 50 years old and the Cherokee had been around for 5 years already. SUV came to Jeep not the other way around. SUV went on to define the meaning of a big gas guzzling paved road monster trimmed in leather. There are number of things the smaller nimbler Jeep can do that even the Hummer couldn't do. But I digress.
When Consumer Report's rates a Jeep, it lowers it to the standards of todays butt cushioning SUV's. I understand that Chrysler has to marketing their vehicles so they at least break even. ( I hope Chrysler at least leaves the Wrangler - or whatever model replaces it next - in it's current state of being the best stock off road vehicle )
So to my fellow Jeep owners I would say, do not be too disgruntled about Consumer Report comparing your beloved Jeep to whatever new SUV comes out that year. The Jeep is in a class all it's own. You bought a vehicle with a long history and a fine heritage. Jeep has been around almost a decade longer than even that British made thing - LandRover? Be proud. Remember to wave at a passing Jeep driver. No other vehicle owners share this comradere. And if you must listen to something Consumer Report's says about your Jeep at least remember what they said about the Wrangler two years ago: "The Wrangler is the last vehicle you would want to take on the road and the first vehicle you would want to take off the road" Whether they meant to or not, this solidified the desire for my Wrangler.

These same people can't even decide if they want paper or plastic bags at the super market, and yet this same magazine uses the surveys they fill out to make their rankings. The whole concept is a joke. The really sad thing is how many consumers in the market for one of the mentioned vehicles will dismiss the Liberty without so much as a look or test drive just because of what this magazine tells them. Well I guess if they are that ignorant, we certainly don't want or need them in the Jeep family now do we. Where the hell is my blood pressure medicine? I wonder if my doctor checked with Consumer Reports before he prescribed this stuff? I better call him just to be sure! " Oh my God!" I bought my phone without reading Consumer Reports, what if it blows up in my hand?................I'll take my chances. Reports just to make sure
