MiscellaneousCamp Jeep in California Cancelled

There will be only one Camp Jeep this year - in Virginia

Posted on the official Jeep Web site:

Dear Jeep owners:

As you know, two dates and locations were planned for Camp Jeep on June 26-28 in Charlottesville, Va., and August 14-16 at a new site near Santa Barbara, Calif. this year. We wanted to let you know that we have revised our 2003 Camp Jeep plans.

The decision has been made to cancel the Camp Jeep event previously scheduled for the August date in California. Camp Jeep 2003 scheduled for June in Virginia will continue as planned. It was the overwhelming demand for Jeep owners to attend the Virginia event that led us to the decision to combine the two events into one. It seemed that many west of the Mississippi River were planning to drive east for the event. We decided it made the most sense to do what we have done in the past and return to holding just one event.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause those who previously registered to attend Camp Jeep in California. If you have already incurred your registration fees, you will receive a full refund and we hope you accept our offer to attend the event in Virginia at half off the admission price. You can be assured that Camp Jeep in Virginia will be the biggest and best of any previous Camp Jeep.

here is my comment

When are they going to stop catering to Easterners and hold Camp Jeep out West!! A jeep is not a fun vehicle for a family of four to travel 3000 miles in. Plus very few people have the vacation time or money to take that long of a vacation. Maybe they could make the events smaller with not so much attractions at firework shows, etc. Then they wouldn't have to attract over 7000 people. I don't think I would want to attend an event with 10,000 people.

I was registered for Camp Jeep California and was planning to drive all the way to California from Ohio. Having been to Virginia 3 times, we decided to make a 5 week trip to CA with Camp Jeep as the centerpiece. I agree if you take the registration money you ought to bite the bullet and have the event even if you don't get the attendance figures. It's no secret that the entrance fee doesn't begin to cover DC's cost for the event. It has made us skeptical of planning our vaction around it next year!

I find it very hard to believe that people west of the Mississippi would rather drive to Virginia than California especially those in the more western states.
I would think there is another reason (don't have a clue what) for the canceled
event.

We'll never know "the rest of the story", as Paul Harvey likes to say.....but rest assured, I won't be driving to VA in July.

hmmmmm.....drive 3000+ miles to Virginia or a couple hundred to Santa Barbara. I really don't think that most people west of the Mississippi would be driving that far.

It sounds like they cancelled it because they didn't get enough people to sign up for the California one. They're is probably a minimum number of people that need to enroll for the event to pay for itself. So, either it didn't pay for itself or not enough signed up to make the profit they want. I'm sorry but if people enroll in something they owe it to the people to go fourth with the plans whether or not they met their quota. They need to work on their marketing research skills and think more about their customers.

Seems that the MANAGEMENT of Camp Jeep is up to the same problems as last year, last min. decisions and not thinking of the "Campers" first.
They just cancelled the California event and they have not yet sent the packets to the registered entrants for the June event. They originally "promised" to send the packets out in April and they now say it will be Monday June 16th for shipment when the Camp starts June 26th. What about those of us who leave home by the 16th and plan to take more time off "vacation" before the Camp starts??? Same thing last year, we left home before the packets arrived on our trip to Branson!
When you sign up and pay in February they should be able to get your packets at least by May 1st!!!
Is anyone in charge?
