MiscellaneousDaimlerChrysler Files Suit Against Web Site for Improperly Using Jeep® Brand Name

DaimlerChrysler Corporation filed a trademark infringement complaint in a North Carolina Federal Court Monday to protect its Jeep® brand name from being tarnished by improper use on the Internet.

If you've been reading the rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys newsgroup or any one of the number of Jeep-related message boards lately, then this probably isn't news to you, but the guys over at http://hardcorejeep.com are being sued by DaimlerChrysler for their use of the Jeep® brand name. Why, among the many, many non-DaimlerChrysler Web Sites with the word "Jeep" in their name is hardcorejeep.com being singled out? DaimlerChrysler claims it has something to do with the scantily clad women posing next to Jeep products. Here's DaimlerChrysler's official press release (in its entirety) on the matter:

DaimlerChrysler Corporation filed a trademark infringement complaint in a North Carolina Federal Court Monday to protect its Jeep® brand name from being tarnished by improper use on the Internet. The suit was filed against a website operator with pattern of misusing Jeep trademarks on several websites as well as associating Jeep products with pornographic material on his website. Ironically, the website operator recently removed some of the pornographic material after he was threatened with separate copyright lawsuit for copying and posting the pornographic images without permission.

The Web Site operator, Nathan W. Collier has been very active on the rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys newsgroup (if you're not sure how to access the newsgroup, the easiest way to to use Google's awesome groups feature) trying to rally support for his cause. A North Carolina television station recently interviewed Nathan about the situation, be sure to check out their article.

So what do you think about this lawsuit? Does Nathan have a chance to be Davey to DaimlerChrysler's Goliath? Let us know i the Reader Reaction section at the bottom of this story.

Collier's a scumbag trying to benefit from
using other peoples copyrighted material
without permission. He even used the
pornography without permission from the
photographers. You can't take and use
whatever you want just because it's on the
internet.

here is my comment .... I never seen the site, but I am sure DC is going a little too far on this matter. The person should be just warned and told, what are the limits to using the Jeep logo.

P.S. he is after all a jeeper !... I hope ? ...

I enjoy looking at beautiful women and I enjoy looking at nice Jeeps. However
I perfer to look at them seperate not together. If I want to look at beautiful
women, placing her on or next to a great looking Jeep doesn't enhance the experience, in fact she either distracts from a great looking Jeep or the Jeep
distracts from her. As for this guys web site I feel that Chrysler needs to worry about things like market share and designing vehicles that people want, because I think Bob Lutz is about to awaken the sleeping giant that we all know as GM.

I hate them, they screwed up my lease on the
Cherokee (So it didn't show up on my credit
hiistory) , and my Chrysler Financial lease
account ended with the numbers 666......
which leads me to believe those rumors
about Chrysler being a Devil Worshiper
company. I am glad to be in my New Beetle
Turbo S, it really is a good vehicle to
compliment the CJ7!

It wasn't wise to post copyrighted images on that website and I understand why Jeep is going after this guy due to the pornography. I just hope DC doesn't decide to go after every website with the word "Jeep" in the domain. If anything, most of these sites are promoting the Jeep concept which can ONLY be of help to DC.

I'm sorry for Mr. Collier's situation, but barely-dressed women don't do justice to the most awesome vehicle on the face of the earth. If you don't already worship JEEP, a naked woman isn't going to change your mind. :) As for the backround picture of the bikini-clad woman on the hood, she needs to be smeared with mud to make that a worthwhile pic. :) Sure, I wear Daisy Duke shorts with the doors off my jacked-up Wrangler, but really, my JEEP deserves ALL the admiring looks.

I think the lawsuit is uncalled for. It's called freedom of speech. He's not say the Jeep brand endores this stuff.
