British Wrangler CRD: 28 MPG

4x4 & MPV Driver magazine in England reports the combined city/highway mpg for the Wrangler Unlimited CRD is an astonishing 28.2 mpg! Diesel trucks are very popular with the pick up truck crowd, and as someone who commutes more than 70 miles a day in a Porsche Cayenne S, I'd gladly pay $5,000 more for the opportunity to have the CRD. As a loyal Jeep fan (1 Grand Wagoneer, 1 Cherokee, 3 Wranglers) I'd never have purchased my Porsche if the CRD Wrangler was an option, but now I may be a Porsche fan for life.

The information appears in an 9-page PDF article that pits the Wrangler CRD against the Land Rover Defender.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2.8 CRD Sahara is the resounding winner in this test. We thought is would be a much closer contest between this pair of iconic off-roaders. But it's clear that Jeep have done far more to make their new 4x4 appeal to a broader ranger of buyers, while retaining its core strengths of off-road ability and functional good looks.

We can do the 1/4 mile, then say Watkins Glen or Elkhart Lake for theroad track and then the Rubicon Trail. Lowest combined time for the three events wins. But it seems unfair since the GC is likely to flip on the first track turn at speed, and does not have a low range gear selection nor a lockable differential. Typical muscle car thinking. Build it to go fast in a straight line, how cool is that?

And that was a $133 Turbo S (06) version, not a half-priced non-Turbo version. Also, U might want to check the lateral g's on the SRT8 (0.92 vs. 0.87 for the Turbo S). So it's not flipping easily in any turn. GYFS I actually rode in a Cayenne to & from JFK, in the cramped backseat, 2 years ago --and in all honesty-- it wasn't bad, if you like being seen in a $60K jellybean. Best quality leather I've ever seen in a vehicle --I'll give it that. You know, if you bought the SRT8, you'd have at least $20K left over... then you wouldn't have felt the need to start this thread by complaining about fuel prices...

Earlier this week however the EU have decided we can keep our imperial measures. I don't expect the forecourts to start pricing petrol by the gallon though. I think they and the government would face a huge wave of protest from the public. At 91.9 pence per litre the price is £4.18 per UK gallon. At $2 to £1 that's $8.36 per US gallon! 80% of which is TAX.

I originally ordered an 07 Unlimited Rubi, and after my deposit was told it would take more than 6 months to build, if they built it at all. (I understand more than 6k orders for 07 Rubis were unfilled) I want a CRD to run Biofuel;just because I have money doesn't mean I want to give it all to Exxon/Mobil. My Cayenne S is more than an "SUV wanna be sports car", if you check out the videos on Youtube you'll see it's everybit a "Trail rated" vehicle as any Jeep, and performs on the track everybit as good as the 911s/Boxters/Caymans. I never wanted a poser SUV, so I purchased the only SUV that will run sand, mud, hills, rocks, and the track. Sorry you can't afford to join me in my new Porsche off-road trail club. When we go to Moab or any other hollowed Jeep ground, I'll be sure to post some Photos. To sum up, I wanted a Jeep, but Ohio couldn't produce them fast enough and will not bring us the engines we desire. Which I find strange since the European Jeeps are made with CRD engines right in the same factory as our Jeeps. And for all you Imperial gallon folks out there: it is my understanding that the Imperial gallon is no longer a legal form of measurement in the U.K., it's just a quaint journalistic holdover from a by gone era, but JonnyJeep should be able to clear up that issue, and 24 mpg is still a hell of a lot better than 18 mpg. No sympathy required or requested, just OUR collective ire at an American company not giving the consumer what he demands.

Since you obviously have the extra disposable income to buy a German luxury SUV-or-whatever it is, realize your moans of high gas prices & MPGs fall on deaf ears. The Jeep CRDs (like the previous one in the Liberty) generally don't meet the new ULSD(S15)/emissions req'ts. So, unless we want a GC with a Bluetec, the rest of us waiting for a JK diesel will have to wait until they decide to put the Bluetec in it, or until any new diesels get certfied. Why don't you try that Cayenne at a stoplight vs. the GC SRT8? ...unless you don't want to spend the $0.50 on a futile burnout. JEEP. There is no substitute!

(The mag has been criticised many times in the past of being biased towards Land Rover anyway.) However, they have a CRD JK as a long term test vehicle and publish their actual MPG figures for each long term test vehicle. They are getting 28.5 for the JK. These are UK figures though and our gallon at 4.546 litres is bigger than in the US. Equivalent mileage figure for 28.5 MP(UK)G is only 23.7 MP(US)G. Don't get too excited!

Hasn't Chrysler learned it's lesson? The CRD KJ sold great....I'm sure that the new 3.0CRD in the Grand will sell great too. $5000 option? Sold. You'll recoup the costs in a year or two. Plus....think of the TORQUE!!!

Starting any discussion about fuel efficiency with that intro negates any opinion that guy has. OK, call it class envy. But really, should this guy give a shit about MPGs if he's driving a $60K-something gotta-havit midlife crisis SUV-wannabe-sports car? I don't think so! And if he does feel a need to talk MPGs, maybe he couldn't afford the Porsche to begin with. Damn, that gets me: upper middle class snobs talking about MPGs. Jeez! Go eat a friggin' brie sandwich Let's see ya drive the Porsche at Red Rock.

That's up to them if they want to feel guilty about their "carbon footprint"... which I personally think is a bogus, fundamentally flawed concept...just don't WHINE about fuel costs & MPG to the rest of us... especially if you've just bought a Porsche, Lambo, or Hummer. It reminds me of when gas prices first breached the $3 mark... There was a string of "news" reports that people who bought H2s for $50-70K and H1s for $100-120K, were bitching that they only got 10MPG in town. What the $#%@ did they expect? So, IMHO, if you're fortunate enough to be able to afford a $50K+ vehicle, and it costs you an extra couple/few hundred per month in gas (because it's a 400HP sports car or a 3-ton tank) then you forfeit your right to bitch about MPGs, and you're owed ZERO sympathy.. To sum it up: wah, friggin' wah!
