Grand CherokeeChrysler Group Tips for Increasing Gas Mileage with MDS Engines
Posted by mike on 2006/4/24 7:04:44 (1307) reads

Now that gas prices are surging again, Chrysler Group is making an attempt to keep those Hemi sales up by offering ways to increase the mileage of these ginormous engines. Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander owners who've got a hemi, take notice:

Just a few simple tips can help owners of Chrysler Group engines with Multi-Displacement System (MDS) get the most fuel mileage possible from their 5.7L HEMI(R) V8 engine.

The customer does not need to drive in a certain way to realize a fuel economy improvement with MDS, but these driving habits can maximize their fuel savings with this technology.
  • Slow down — every 5 mph over 65 mph can decrease fuel economy by as much as 7 percent
  • Use modest acceleration when possible, minimizing "jack rabbit" starts
  • Moderate use of air conditioning and other accessories such as fog lamps and heated seats
  • Use cruise control to help maintain a steady speed
  • Limit idle and warm up periods — don't leave vehicles idle while running in for the cup of coffee in the morning
  • Plan your trip to avoid rush hour, if you can, to avoid idling in traffic

We're pretty sure we learned all these things during driving school, but a little refresher course never hurt.

More tips after the jump...

Check Vehicle Condition

  • Ensure proper vehicle maintenance
    • Replace dirty air filters — a clogged air filter can reduce fuel economy as much as 10 percent
    • Check tire pressures — tires underinflated by just 2 psi can reduce fuel economy as much as 1 percent
  • Remove extra weight from vehicles — an extra 100 pounds in the trunk or pickup box can lower fuel economy 1 to 2 percent
  • Reduce aerodynamic drag on vehicle by taking empty cargo carriers, bike racks, ski racks, etc. off — at highway speed, 50 percent of the engine power is used to overcome aerodynamic drag
  • Remove unused items from roof racks as a loaded roof rack can reduce fuel economy at highway speeds by as much as 5 percent
  • Keep vehicle engine tuned up as a noticeably out of tune engine can reduce fuel economy as much as 4 percent
  • If vehicle engine light is on, have the vehicle serviced — faulty components such as an oxygen sensor can reduce fuel economy as much as 40 percent

Edmunds.com recently did a study of 6 common gas saving myths. For the ones cited in this article, one of them, limit use of AC, was tested and the results were found to be negligible. Windows down or AC yielded the same results. Slowing down and limiting idling showed significant differences.

When is someone going to come up with a chip or switch that will let you switch the engine.

Then if you felt like saving gas, you could just leave it on 4-cyl. mode, but if felt like having some power, switch to v-8.

And put that into the new wrangler unlimitted also.
