SalesJeep Retails Sales Up in September, Fleet Sales Down
Posted by mike on 2007/10/3 6:58:03 (1135) reads

Chrysler LLC announced their September sales numbers yesterday, and while overall Jeep sales were down 11%, they made it clear that retails sales were on the rise, while "planned fleet reductions" were the root cause of the 11% drop.

The Wrangler continued to be the superstar, gaining 71% over September, 2006. It is interesting to note that for the year, the combined sales of the Patriot and Compass are less than each for the Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee continues to be the sales leader for Jeep - but just barely. The Wrangler is less than 1,000 vehicles short of outselling it.

Full sales figures after the jump.

This really shouldn't come as a big surprise - the formulas for the Compass and Patriot were wrong for the intended market. The Patriot has decent styling, an acceptable drivetrain, and an impressive (optional) all-wheel drive system. Even though it lacks the clearance, true transfer-case, and robust structure required for a true off-roader it could be successful if the price point was appropriate.

The Compass on the other hand, was a total miss. Stodgy and unimpressive in almost every way, it was clearly a product of DC's lack of understanding of the Jeep brand. I find it very ironic that the Compass and JK Rubicon are produced at the same time by the same company. I agree with MikeH that if they had made it a true WRX rally contender, it could have had promise.

Hopefully Jeep's new ownership will heed the sales numbers and pull the brand back on track. The Jeep brand has specific strengths that should be capitalized on rather than watering its product down to be like everything else.

I always felt like the Compass should've simply been a production version of the Willys2 concept. I thought it was kinda ugly at the time, but it bears more than a passing resemblance to the very popular new FJ Cruiser. In that light -& given the success of the Honda Element and Scions- they could've had a winner on their hands if they'd done it properly.

Personally, I'd rather see it completely stripped down, retooled, redesigned & kept and drop the Patriot instead, but I don't think it'll happen that way...

Seems to me that the average price (i.e., with a few options) for a 4WD Compass or Patriot is around $20K. And you can get into a 4WD Wrangler or Liberty for around that price... so there's a lot of overlap.

Just to show how much overlap: our plant has a Compass Limited on display (with leather & everything) with a sticker price of over $26K! That's now into GC base price territory!

Couple that with the fact that the (new) mileage ratings for that 4-banger don't even breech into the 30's, and it's no wonder the Patriot & Compass seems like a swing & a miss.

I do like the Patriot, but I keep getting into the $20K's everytime I price one out with a few options (and that's not even for a Limited version!) For that price, I wind up talking myself into a new Liberty or Wrangler --which I think a lot of other people wind up doing.

If these were supposed to be econoboxes, then the pricing should have been $14-18K, and no leather seat or fancy options, and ~35MPG.

Leather in a Compass? C'mon, JEEP, you can't be all things to all people within the same model!

So, I think the sales of the JKs and new Libertys will continue to cannibalize the New World cars...

Agreed, the Patriot should have been the econobox... vinyl floors, cloth seats, none of the fancy heated leather options, etc.

For $26,000 I can get a base model Commander or Grand Cherokee, or a mid-level Wrangler or Liberty. The Patriot needs to top out at $18,000 or so.

The Compass would have been more successful if DCX had dared to take some chances with it... make it more of an activity vehicle for going to the beach, running the dunes, etc. than a little hatchback with sedan tires.

When I first saw the Patriot, it merely reminded me of a 9/10 scale Liberty (especially when compared to the new one). It's OK, but not real inspiring. I had hoped it would be more along the lines of the Honda Element or Scion Xb. A true econo-BOX.

When I first saw the Compass, I immediately thought Rally vehicle. What a hoot that would have been, if offered as a Special Edition with AWD & the 300HP SRT4 engine (OK, now 285HP). They could have put some extra driving lights on the front (like the Rally cars have), racing stripes, hot wheel & tire combos, and then tooled this thing up Pike's Peak for fun, drifting all the way!

Yeah, most Jeepers still wouldn't have been interested, but at least the ugly duckling would have had a purpose and attracted a (young) target audience... who might then become the new faithful to the brand!

I agree too. They blew it with the Compass. It could have been so much more.
The Patriot is too expensive. It starts out ok but just adding some basic options it gets too pricey.

+1 on the Patriot being too expensive - both to buy and to own. When it came out I seriously considered trading in my '06 KJ Renegade for a 4x4 Patriot. I figured it would go everywhere the KJ does for me, and at the 29MPG they touted I'd save thousands per year over the 15.5 I get in the KJ. Since we're in a transition period for EPA estimates - '08 estimates are more true-to-real-life than '07 and before - I got confused and took that 29MPG estimate as being somewhat reliable. Then I hit the message boards and read what Patriot owners are getting. 17, 18, in some cases 15MPG. Right. How could I buy a *car* to replace my KJ if it doesn't solve the only problem I have with the KJ?
