Chrysler LLC announced their September sales numbers yesterday, and while overall Jeep sales were down 11%, they made it clear that retails sales were on the rise, while "planned fleet reductions" were the root cause of the 11% drop.
The Wrangler continued to be the superstar, gaining 71% over September, 2006. It is interesting to note that for the year, the combined sales of the Patriot and Compass are less than each for the Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee continues to be the sales leader for Jeep - but just barely. The Wrangler is less than 1,000 vehicles short of outselling it.

![]() This really shouldn't come as a big surprise - the formulas for the Compass and Patriot were wrong for the intended market. The Patriot has decent styling, an acceptable drivetrain, and an impressive (optional) all-wheel drive system. Even though it lacks the clearance, true transfer-case, and robust structure required for a true off-roader it could be successful if the price point was appropriate.
The Compass on the other hand, was a total miss. Stodgy and unimpressive in almost every way, it was clearly a product of DC's lack of understanding of the Jeep brand. I find it very ironic that the Compass and JK Rubicon are produced at the same time by the same company. I agree with MikeH that if they had made it a true WRX rally contender, it could have had promise. Hopefully Jeep's new ownership will heed the sales numbers and pull the brand back on track. The Jeep brand has specific strengths that should be capitalized on rather than watering its product down to be like everything else. |

![]() I always felt like the Compass should've simply been a production version of the Willys2 concept. I thought it was kinda ugly at the time, but it bears more than a passing resemblance to the very popular new FJ Cruiser. In that light -& given the success of the Honda Element and Scions- they could've had a winner on their hands if they'd done it properly.
Personally, I'd rather see it completely stripped down, retooled, redesigned & kept and drop the Patriot instead, but I don't think it'll happen that way... |

Just to show how much overlap: our plant has a Compass Limited on display (with leather & everything) with a sticker price of over $26K! ![]() Couple that with the fact that the (new) mileage ratings for that 4-banger don't even breech into the 30's, and it's no wonder the Patriot & Compass seems like a swing & a miss. ![]() I do like the Patriot, but I keep getting into the $20K's everytime I price one out with a few options (and that's not even for a Limited version!) For that price, I wind up talking myself into a new Liberty or Wrangler --which I think a lot of other people wind up doing. ![]() If these were supposed to be econoboxes, then the pricing should have been $14-18K, and no leather seat or fancy options, and ~35MPG. ![]() Leather in a Compass? C'mon, JEEP, you can't be all things to all people within the same model! ![]() So, I think the sales of the JKs and new Libertys will continue to cannibalize the New World cars... |
