MiscellaneousBreaking Up (Chrysler) is Hard to Do

Coming on the heels of the international Jeep Patriot debut at the Geneva Auto Show, DaimlerChrysler CEO Dr. Z (Dieter Zetsche) has been talking to the press about the difficulties in trying to unload Chrysler Group:

The chief executive of DaimlerChrysler, Dieter Zetsche, said yesterday that it would be difficult to break up Chrysler, as analysts and other outside experts have speculated in recent weeks, because of an integrated production system that binds together its various brands.

"Chrysler Group is very integrated," Zetsche said in an interview at the Geneva Motor Show. "The technical lines, like platforms, do not go along the same lines as the brands. The less they are aligned with the brands, the more difficult it would be to think of any separation."

Zetsche emphasized that he was making an observation, not commenting on options for how DaimlerChrysler might sell the Chrysler unit, a prospect it confirmed three weeks ago that it was considering. But his statement seemed to reinforce reports that DaimlerChrysler hopes to unload Chrysler as a single unit, rather than pull out single brands such as Jeep.

I think what Dr. Z. said was very much the case they are in right now. I'm pulling for jeep to stay with ze germans should thier "plan" not work. I'm sure they are feeling a lot like that guy who got his arm caught between boulders while hiking in Utah. Dr. Z. was just saying it would be hard to cut that arm off. I'm just saying that guy in Utah did cut his arm off and is alive today.

I think other than Jeep sharing platforms / pieces with the Dodge / Chrysler lines and visa versa, his comment was also meaning there was sharing among the Dailmer and Chrysler lines as well that have improved efficiencies and saved costs... for instance the BlueTec in the new Benz and in the upcoming Grand.... I am sure there are a few parts being shared too....

I noticed that that unbelievably heinous looking R-Class looks like a re-badged Pacifica. Does anyone know if they share the same platform?

heh, just more evidence that the supposed sell-off isn't going to happen. the ruse is up. saw this a little earlier:

I never thought it would happen anyway, and still don't.

Not only are the Chrysler brands intertwined with themselves, they're also intertwined with Mercedes products and systems.
