Behind the smiles, handshakes, and bear hugs at Wednesday's groundbreaking for Chrysler Corp.'s Toledo Jeep assembly plant were fears that problems acquiring commercial property in the project's path could delay the introduction of a vehicle crucial to the company's marketing strategy in the opening years of the 21st century.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner is scrambling to find an additional $20 million to purchase and prepare a 450-acre site in North Toledo off Stickney Avenue to turn over to Chrysler officials for its new factory, which is expected to assemble the next generation of Jeep Cherokees.
