WranglerInteresting Article About Modular Door Design in New Wrangler

CompositesWorld.com is running an interesting article about the modular door design of the 2007 Wrangler.

The doors are proof of this point - the Wrangler will be available with either full-height or half-height doors, and a new four-door version is in the works, a first for this model. And with each door, prospective owners have the additional options of either power or manual windows and locks. For DaimlerChrysler, this range of options was a significant driver in rethinking door design and assembly, emphasizes Jeff Tibbenham, supervisor of DaimlerChrysler's window regulator and door module center of competence. "We had to find a way to take some labor out of assembly and find a way to build more vehicles in the same assembly plant, with the same capital assets," Tibbenham explains. Similar "rethinking" processes, years ago, led automotive OEMs to outsource integrated instrument panel modules and, more recently, integrated front-end components from outside suppliers. For the new Wrangler, DaimlerChrysler applied a similar solution, turning to key window regulator supplier Hi-Lex Controls Inc. (Troy, Mich.) to develop a modular door solution. The result is a single assembly that integrates the window mechanism (manual or power), lock and handle hardware, door latch and all cables and wiring, permitting rapid installation and pre-validated performance. Supporting all these components is a structural module plate, produced via injection-compression molding from a high-strength, long glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) compound supplied by Ticona Engineering Polymers (Florence, Ky.). The long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (LFRT) permits extremely complex shapes and integral ribs and bosses not possible in steel stamping. The module is of the "sealed" type, in that it also provides a watertight interface within the door assembly, without additional plastic sheeting.

I love the idea of power lock and windows - I was hassling the DH to put them on the Rubicon. Ever since we've had the Rubicon the damn windows turn so hard. and for a woman the power locks on a four door are a security issue. Shit happens at the malls all the time. Now I just have to keep it from getting keyed at WalMart - lol. The 4 door gives us the option of have the best of both worlds - thank you Jeep - JUST LET ME HAVE IT IN SOLAR YELLOW>

My only question in regards to the doors with power locks and windows is how easy it will be to disable the cords and take the doors off. Will there be a quick disconnect type thing and it not be a big hassel, or will it take a lot of time to enjoy door off action. I know a lot of jeepers are going to counter this by ignoring what i am saying and boast that true jeepers won't get power options and won't have to worry about it, but what about people that want the best of both worlds, how will it work out?

I believe there will be one plug, and I thought I had seen a photo of it in one of the autoshow photos but I can't seem to find it.

I found this picture in an old link Mike had posted back in April:

Can't tell if there is a quick connect under the dash or not.

Yeah as that picture sort of shows, the wires for the power door locks and window regulators will be run through the door retaining strap and have a quick connect molex plug. Also since only the door lock is on the door panel and the window regulator switches are on the dash, you could potentially remove the front doors on the 4 door unlimited and still be able to control the windows in the rear.

I agree with having the best of both worlds I would definitely want to get full doors and a dual top group. I am sure Bestop will be coming out with a set of soft doors in the near future if you want half doors.

I don't think that power windows and locks is the death of a strudy vehicle like a jeep.

I didn't mind when i was youger, but now having a little car to run around in that does NOT have power windows and locks is just a pain. I don't run the ac a lot and opening all the windows by hand takes time and effort.

As long as the unit in the door is water proof/resistant and repaired easily. That injected molding sealed system (however)sounds like it will be impossible to repair.
