Concept/DemonstrationPatriot and Wrangler Unlimited in Chrysler Group ESP Video
Posted by Brian_R on 2006/9/19 11:09:47 (2862) reads

With the addition of Electronic Stability Program in the Jeep Wrangler, DaimlerChrysler has been moving all of its vehicles to include ESP. Now the NTSB is going to require that vehicles include Electronic Stability Technology in the next few years.

To coincide with the NTSB announcement, DCX posted a video of several vehicles in a side-by-side with ESP on and ESP off. It's interesting to see, as they include a Chrysler minivan, Dodge Nitro, Jeep Patriot, Dodge Ram, and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in different tests.

I haven't yet got a complete answer to my big concern with ESP and especially ERM; that is, can it be turned off completely? I've read that ESP can be, but does that include ERM or not? I don't want electronic "nannies" taking care of me. I intensely dislike any decision that's taken away from me, like Traction Control (part of the routine in starting my SVT Mustang is to plug in the radar detector, then turn off the traction control), and I very much despise Dummy Running Lights! So, whether or not these "driver aids" can be completely turned off could make the difference in buying a Jeep or not.

Put whatever you want as long as there is a fun, I mean, off switch.

Hate to be the cone resetter guy in those videos. I thought shagging cones at the local rallycross sucked

I do beleive there are plenty of benefits to the ESP system. I think there were a few problems with the "Disabled" test runs.
The Ram driver turned the wheel too early in the returning lane-change.
The Wrangler driver didn't turn into the slide when the rear end started to slide-out. It did however continue to track very straight which leads me to think it was a locked Rubicon.
I did like seeing the Nitro, it reminds me of the Durango prototype.

It is great that the Wrangler will now have what the Compass already has. Now we won't have to worry about the Wrangler deluting the brand.

i was not surprised to see the ram loose control like that. with an empty bed, there is no wieght over those back wheels. the unlimited did seem to do the best out of all of them. just another reason for purchase!!

The Wrangler Unlimited seemed to keep the best control with ESP off. The Dodge Ram got scary very early.
