Grand Cherokee2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Plans?

Allpar claims to have the latest scoop on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is to be the basis for the 2012 Dodge Durango (and, if they keep it, the Dodge Aspen)

As for looks, our guess is that Jeep will move back to the original Grand Cherokee styling cues. Most likely, aerodynamic considerations will have a much higher influence than before — which does not necessarily mean you should expect swoopy lines, since the new Ram doesn’t look especially aerodynamic but is, and the “aero-styled” Shadow wasn’t. We suspect the “blocky” styling will be toned down, inside and out; today’s ethic is looking lighter, not heavier. We’re hoping the goofy headlight treatment will disappear — replaced either by the current “big round headlights” or by the Grand Cherokee’s original rectangles.

Redriderbob wrote, “We do know it will draw super-heavy amounts of influence from the 2007 Jeep Trailhawk Concept. That vehicle was based on the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited platform that has a 116" wheelbase, the same wheelbase as the previous generation Dodge Durango! Front grille styling, as well as side profile styling cues will be very similar I am told. The vehicle will carry more chunky and edgy fenders. I have been told it will look more like a Range Rover Sport with Jeep DNA on steroids!”

Be sure to check out the entire article - it has many more details on potential powertrains and styling.

Ok, so this article is just regurgitating info that's been know for quite some time now. I didn't see any new details in there...

Next gen GC will be a ground-up redesign and the Durango and Aspen/Pacifica replacements will be built off the same platform. That's been known for like a year now probably, maybe longer.

Phoenix engines, Hemis, diesel... all givens.

Everything else is pretty much just speculation.

Given Jeep's history of showing us previews of future styling in their concept vehicles, I definitely think we'll see a lot of the Trailhawk's look in the next GC. Personally I think the liftgate will be more vertical like the ZJ's and WJ's, vs the faux-fastback hatch of the WK, in order to fit an optional 3rd row back there and boost cargo room (and IMHO the more vertical back end just looks better). The Trailhawk's tail end is pretty steeply raked though...

The best thing that could happen to Jeep is for private US investors to buy them and make them Jeep again. Chrysler continues to water the brand down so they can pay the UAW crooks. That being said I think my Commander is a really well build vehicle, except for the traction control computer. Grrr!

A Jeep does not need to pull G's in corners, they need to be tough, last long, tow well and be simple therefore a solid axle should be standard and a selling point. The Wrangler is the only solid axle Jeep left in the showroom and it cannot tow itself!! If you want a good off roader and to be able to tow anything significant you are out of luck. I guess Chrysler wants you to buy a Wrangler and Grand to do the job one should.

I hope this means a return to solid axles!

Keep living in the past. This generation could likely even be independent all around. Look at it's competition in the segment, it's pretty much the way of the world. Ford, VW, Land Rover, BMW all independent. If you want a live axle off-roader, your best option is going to continue to be a Wrangler.

In the past Jeep had a loyal following, so I think it is smart to live in the past in that sense. Jeep really created this segment, and it will still be in this segment when all the other makers get out (and many will).

I've owned 3 jeeps now (yj, xj, wj), and they have each been very different vehicles and served very different purposes and have fit my lifestyle as it has evolved from college student to family man. All of these Jeeps have had solid axles and they have had a common DNA in terms of their AWD systems. Jeep has been cutting this commonality in a bid to keep up with all the new competition (first in 2001-XJ, then again in 2004-Wj), but I think that that kind of thinking is misguided. If you agree that the wrangler is the soul of the brand then it makes no sense not to imbue as many other models as possible with that same essence. All the tired arguments about how no one takes their $45,000 grand cherokee overlands rock crawling is missing the point.

When I get into my 2004 overland and it recognizes me by my key and automatically adjusts my heated leather seats and auto dimming mirrors to fit my frame and favored driving position, and as the rain sensing windshield automatically engages my wipers to swipe off the first drops of an early November rain while the navigation system gently guides me to some colleagues house way out in the boonies all the while the quadradrive automatically is sensing and sending torque to any wheels that have traction, I secretly am happy to think that underneath all this ridiculous opulence, I am driving something as capable in its own way as a wrangler.

Am I the only one that does this?
