Liberty120,000 Libertys to be Recalled

In the first major recall for the Jeep Liberty, DaimlerChrysler recently announced that 120,000 of the popular SUVs would be recalled. Here are the details from Yahoo! News:

The Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG said Thursday it is recalling 120,000 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles to repair a problem that could delay the deployment of its driver's side air bag.

There have been no deaths or injuries related to the problem, the automaker said.

The problem is caused by a bracket scraping a sensor wire during a severe frontal crash.

The condition causes the air bag to inflate about 20 milliseconds slower, which could cause an injury to the driver, spokesman Michael Rosenau said.

``The likelihood of this type of contact is extremely rare,'' the automaker said in a statement.

The problem was discovered during a recent crash test, the automaker said. Rosenau said a rubber casing will be installed around the wires.

The vehicles affected will be those built from April - the start of the 2002 model year production - through Nov. 27.

Owners will be notified by mail as soon as the automaker is able to secure enough rubber casings to repair all the vehicles, Rosenau said.

About two-thirds of the vehicles being recalled also will be checked to see whether a locking clip that attaches a lower panel on the driver's side could become loose or detach.

The locking clips will be changed to ``a more robust fastening system,'' the company said. It affects the SUVs built between April and Sept. 13.

The automaker said it has received 13 complaints but no reports of injuries.

The Jeep Liberty has been one of Chrysler's most popular vehicles, with 75,722 sold through November.

Sales for the small SUV, which went on the market last spring, have been so brisk that it has not been included in the automaker's zero-percent finance offers.

Kia worshipper Rox, just like me! We drive knowing that our cars won't roll over and kills us. Look at Ford with their 10th recall of the year! Jeep with their inferior build quality and designs. Most people who post on this forum are ignorant. Buy American is their war cry. Go ahead, just don't say they are better cars :).

BUY KIA!!! YOU'LL LIVE MY FRIEND!!!

Joe and Kia NOS!!!!

All this fuss over a possible worn wire? It's a good thing the problem was spotted early and only 120k vehicles were possibly affected. Once they've all been fixed... everyone will forget it ever happened!

Jeep is in an accident you live... Kia is an accident... death or vegatable. Why is anyone trying to tell these guys Korean cars suck. Everyone knows that and the only ones trying to justify the opposite are the poor (in all sense of the word) guys that bought one. So the Liberty lifted a wheel.... so did the Montero, Discovery, and even an X5 did. SUV will do that, especially if they can go offroad. So to the guys who collected box tops to get their sweet cars, now you can trade them for a meal at McDonalds... but not the value size.... economy is still weak, like the resale value of your car.

go ahead and buy cars made in South Korea, where the minimum wage is $1.60 an hour and the average manufacturing wage about $2.49 an hour. you get what you pay for...when the floor falls out or the engine grenades don't come here and cry to us...

Most all cars have recalls, especially in the first year of production. So this recall doesn't mean that the Liberty is not a real Jeep. Korean cars are a piece of crap!! We owned a Hyundai Excel and talk about a joke of a car. We should have sued the damn Koreans to get our money back! That thing was dangerous to drive 'cause it had no pick-up and it was sooo cheap inside. It was only four years old with maybe 45,000 miles on it and the engine literally blew up. Smoke and crap was spewing all over the place. How many old used Hyundai's and Kia's do you see on the road?? Hardly any 'cause they all die and go to their grave real fast and are such crap that people get rid of them. You see many more older model Jeeps and Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, etc. That speaks for the manufacturer of these cars. Maybe a Kia is all you could afford so you feel you have to praise it big time, but it certainly doesn't rule compared to other cars out there. Maybe someday you'll have a chance to experience the best.
