Concept/DemonstrationGladiator Pickup in early 2008?
Posted by mike on 2007/7/26 7:16:11 (2981) reads

An unsourced article over at CarJunky.com has all sorts of facts about the long-rumored Jeep Gladiator pickup going into production and being available in early 2008. The article is long on "facts" and short on sources, so we're not really sure what to make of it. On one hand, it could be a major scoop, but on the other hand, it could be the late-night ramblings of a crazy guy with a keyboard. Regardless, here's a snippet:

The chassis for the Gladiator uses a stretched Dodge Dakota to get the extended wheelbase but the overall visual impact of the automobile remains in proportion. The truck has that angular militaristic luck, no curves and blunt lines but then if you are in the market for beauty you wouldn't be looking at a pickup.

When this becomes available in early 2008 it is going to make an excellent addition to the Jeep range and carries the idea of the Jeep Truck far better than anything else in the Jeep range which seem to be aimed at the suburbanites doing the school run rather than something that will be going off road and getting dirty. The Gladiator looks exactly as you would expect a Jeep to look and in this regard it gets top grade.

Make what you will of this story, but we'd sure like some confirmation before we put our money down.

Thanks to Whos_Deal for the link.

Re: Gladiator Pickup in early 2008?
IMHO the article is bogus. Early 2008 is just around the corner. If the Gladiator was going to be here that soon, there'd be more info out about it. Shoot, if the Gladiator was going to be here that soon, general specs about it would probably be common knowledge by now. Chrysler is horrible about keeping details like that secret.

And why on earth would they use a Dakota chassis? I know we've got the boys at Dodge to thank for the design of the JK's chassis but I think it would take a lot more work to convert a Dakota chassis to fit a JK's body and running gear than it would to simply stretch the existing JK Unlimited chassis.... Unless they were planning what would basically be a rebadged Dakota, complete with IFS?? JK styling or not, a Dakota running gear would kill the Gladiator. People want a real Jeep truck, not just a Jeep styled truck.

Dakota chassis or JK chassis, it wouldn't be a "small" truck either way. The concept has a 138" wheelbase -- that's only 2" shorter than a Quadcab Ram!! And the JK's axles are nearly full-width anyway. The JK Unlimited is currently the biggest Jeep that Jeep produces -- it's bigger and has more cargo than both the Grand Cherokee and the Commander. It would be a mid-size truck, just like the Dakota, just like the new Tacoma (yes, the new Tacoma is most-definitely a mid-size truck now).

As much as I want this to be true I highly doubt it. I've been trying to find out info on this vehicle for quite some time and found a few sources with direct contacts within Jeep. According to them with any new 08 vehicle we would have already seen signs of prepping for production and that hasn't happened. It could come out in mid 09, or a very small limited run in 08 they could hide but then it wouldn't really be a production vehicle. This blog article looks like just a rehash of old info thats been out for years, except the Dakota frame stuff.

I do wish they'd make this, I've been waiting for a new Jeep truck for 10 years. Everyone says small trucks are dead. Thats because all small trucks around today are junk. Even the midsized segment are mostly city trucks that wouldn't stand up real work and abuse that a truck is supposed to be made for.

We used my Comanche as the primary workhorse in a family business for a decade, mostly attached to a trailer and hauling cords of wood or a yard of gravel in the back or a dozen bags of cement in the back. Most of the roads then were not paved so about 1/4 of it's 320K miles were very rough ones. No other vehicle we owned came close to withstanding that type of abuse even a few fullsized fords (ick) but the little Jeep just kept on taking it. Plus it was a favorite among friends for hunting, we could squeeze it through places carrying gear where a bigger 4WD wouldn't dare tread.

Jeep, please please please come out with another truck. Make a small truck that can haul 1600+lbs or tow 4K+ while getting 25mpg in normal driving and offroadable on the weekends like my 21 year old Comanche and people will buy them like hotcakes. Currently there is nothing produced that could replace my aging truck.. I haven't given up all hope on the Gladiator just yet but my patience is wearing thin, I've begun a ground up rebuild of my old Jeep. If noone will make a truck like I wan't I guess I'll have to. Hopefully it'll last another 20 years and quarter million+ miles of rough abuse ;) I just wish I could get one of those 2.8 turbo diesels the concept had to throw in mine.

If you "patriots" want to talk about your cute little Toyotikas, go to another website. You're in an unwanted minority, here. This site is for Jeepers. I wouldn't get out of the electric chair to buy a Toyotika at half price.

I hope you all sleep better at night in the comfort that the net profits from your rice-burning vehicles went back to Japan. YES, back to Japan. Even if they're "assembled" by a hillbilly, the profits go to some overpaid hard-on residing in the Rising Sun.

BTW, a Honda Civic can tote a mere 1300# of stuff, if it has to... like 4 football players... Sooo impressive... GMAB!

P.S. Don't forget to visit the dealership to get all the recalls fixed on your "high quality Tonka toys"

What should be a minority is idiots that think in jingoistic broad terms that don't really mean anything. Puffing out your chest doesn't mean anything.

Net profits...please. I guess you must not wear t shirts or sneakers unless they are hand made in the USA right?

Are the people happily working at these Toyota plants in the US not patriots because someone opened a plant where they live and they have a job and feed there families? They are red commies how dare they!

I bought an 2wd 02 Tacoma after my Cherokee was on its last legs and I didn't want a Liberty. After owning nothing but Jeeps my whole life and Jeep not making a real Cherokee replacement or a truck that's somehow my fault? I am still waiting for Jeep to make something I want and and I am not a patriot because I bought a Toyota? Are you serious?

The big three have screwed themselves, me, and lot's of my friends who worked for them over and over and over by painting themselves into a corner at every chance they could.

Net profits...come on. You a CEO or something? You think the employees see much of that money?

I am not even a current gen Toyota fan boy as there current trucks have succumbed to the bigger porkier more useless mantra subscribed to by nearly everyone.

But come on. The statement of small midsize trucks came up. People pointed out not every small truck is tanking and now they are un-American?

Toyota pickups, Landcruisers, Jeeps, and Landrovers are some of the coolest 4wds on the planet. Why if you own one you have to hate the other, or have to give a flying F where the company is headquartered is beyond me.

Good thing people around the world don't think like you otherwise they couldn't buy a Jeep in their home country with out being lynchedby a mob of backward assed protectionists like you.

Thanks for giving me permission to not take anything you say very seriously.

I guess I was indentured into jingoism the day I accepted a job in the US auto industry. Great word, BTW.

Now, if you could just learn when to use "there", "their", and "they're"... or "a" vs. "an"... your prose would be much more effective.

Again, don't forget to get those recalls taken care of, and enjoy that 2WD Toyotika! Now THAT'S really funny. All that bluster and you only have a 2WD truck... which supposedly replaced a Jeep Cherokee! Amazing. Talk about not being able to take someone seriously... LoL

I, too, hope JEEP makes something you like soon, so you can snap back into the fold.

I'm glad I "stirred the pot", because you have given me an idea. The new Scrambler/Gladiator was recently branded as a Jeep "JT". Long live the Jingo Truck!

Well, now, I'm off to a Toyota website to spead the love. If love fails, I'll propose a 3rd A-bomb.

P.S.-
Seriously, I kind of like the FJs... very utilitarian & it has a stronger engine than the JKs. I just can't bring myself to buy one. It's kind of like lingerie: it's nice to look at, but I don't want to be seen in it.

I realize this is a Jeep site - it's why I come here. I was pointing out how I *would buy* a Gladiator if they produced it. I was showing how I bought a Toyota because there is no comparable domestic light truck. A Gladiator would be the first American truck to enter this segment.

As for recalls - let's stick with facts:

2006 Tacoma SR5 4x4 4.0L, Recalls: None

2006 Jeep Liberty Renegade 4x4 3.7L, Recalls:

1. Body Control Module - lights could come on while vehicle is parked thus draining the battery
2. Lower Ball Joints - ball joints could fail and seperate, possibly causing a deadly accident if occurs at speed
3. Heating/Cooling system blower motor - if fan setting set to the highest setting and heat set to warmest setting, the system could catch fire

Other problems that have not been recalled or otherwise addressed:

Tacoma: None
Liberty: TPMS system false-fires when the humidity or relative barometric pressure changes as a weather system moves into the area. This happens about twice per month. I check the tires with a gauge every time and all five are always properly inflated, 33psi.

I always like to stick to the facts, plus some humor...

The 2006 Toyota Tacoma has had recalls. Apparently you didn't take 5 minute to click on the links above, so I'll print the text for the (2) Tacoma owners on this JEEP website... as a courtesy:

2006 Tacoma Recall Reports

In both, "on certain vehicles." My VIN is not affected. How many recalls have I received on my Tacoma? Zero. What does that mean? It means that the company corrected the problem. Can you say that about the KJ LBJ issue? It affected every KJ ever built over a five year period.

Regarding the second recall - it's an assembly issue regarding how tires are mounted on the wheels at the assembly facility in California. This is an assembly problem. All three recalls that I had repaired on my KJ are design issues. Sure, the airbag recall was a design issue, but they corrected it before my truck was assembled, hence no recall for me.

All the more reason Jeep should have stuck with solid axles and not this IFS junk. ;)

And while your particular Tacoma may have dodged the recall bullet so far (who knows what flaws may show up later on though -- it's not like the LBJ issue on the KJ was known from the start...), let's not forget the whole engine sludge issue, which prompted a class-action lawsuit didn't it? Oh, and the new Tundra snapping cam shafts.

I have to disagree about the small pickup being dead. Maybe the mid sized trucks like the Dakota are dead but you can't tell me that a Toyota Tacoma with a 4 cylinder engine costs as much to produce as a 3/4 ton Chevy with a big V8. If they did they would cost as much to buy. Besides the Toyota is going to get much, much better gas mileage than a full size. Toyota has sold over 92,000 Tacoma's this year, alomst as many GMC Sierra's. People are too hooked on getting the biggest trucks they can with massive towing and hauling ratings just to bring groceries home.

Tacoma is not a small pickup anymore. It has grown considerably since the last generation.

Re: Gladiator Pickup in early 2008?
I'll second that. The MY05+ Tacoma is the biggest truck in the mid-size segment. The only remaining small truck is the ford, and it is the only one that's dead. People are buying Tacomas and Frontiers like nobody's business. The Toyota took the title of top-selling light truck a couple of years back and has held on to it.

Mid-size and light trucks are far from dead. Domestic mid-size and light trucks aren't selling well, but that's because of quality and form. The Japanese ones sell like mad because (1) they are far better-built than the domestics and (2) they are far more off-road capable, sitting higher, having more travel and tighter turning radii. Throw in the fuel-economy topic that everyone thinks about now, and the idea of a pickup truck that gets 26mpg while still being able to haul 1300lbs of stuff is a real selling point these days.

when the gladiator pctures started showing up on the web i was really excited. and then...... i am "kinda in the industry" and one thing i know for a fact is that the small pickups are dead. they only cost about 5k less then their full size big brothers and they cost almost as much to make. i really don't know what jeep would be doing making a new model like that at this point in time. i highly doubt this is going to happen. like i said, i got really excited when i saw the glad. but the more i thought about it the more the 4dr looked better. the small truck is dead. i know for a fact that the chances of there being a new redesign for the ford small truck is somewhere around 15%. no one is buying them and they are expensive to make. if jeep knows what they are doing they will NOT produce the gladiator. maybe they don't know what they are doing. deisel wrangler anyone?

That is an intersting point of view. I think the flaw is in that you are thinking of the Gladiator as a "small truck". While it may be true that it is physically a "small truck" I believe the reason people will buy it is because they consider it to be a quality vehicle that suits their needs. I think this is the same reason the 4 door wrangle is selling so well. People are NOT thinking of it as just another trashy SUV. I am certainly not qualified to argue if the Gladiator is a quality vehicle. But, it is kind of a moot point. If people perceive it as one, they will buy it. Of course people will change their minds quickly if it turns out to be a piece of junk. That is what chrysler has to worry about.

Remember, the MY08 Dakota gets the new 302HP/329 ft-lbs 4.7L-H.O.-V8! So, it would be awesome to get that in a JT/Scrambler... as long as JEEP remembers that MANY OF US LIKE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION in our Jeeps.

It could be a tactic to 'save' the Dakota platform (remember, they aslo share a version with a foreign automaker (Mitsubishi ?), or at least add production to a plant with excess capacity (remember, they cant make enough Wranglers, so how could Toledo add a PU version ?)

Anyway, I like the SkunkWerks PU version, and building a 2 door, long wheelbase Wrangler and calling it a Scrambler would be a no-brainer, I thought that is what 'Flexible Platform" was all about.

A Gladiator Pickup would be a great addition nonetheless, as long as it is 'JEEP Tough'

So would the frames be built at the Dakota factory and then shipped to Toledo's Supplier Park to finish the vehicle? What is the source of all these rumors? Is it Chrysler execs planning their first moves of what they will do after the partial-divorce of their German partners?

Those are the kind of details that would make this rumor credible. Unfortunately, it is probably just the ramblings of someone with one too many six packs.

Re: Gladiator Pickup in early 2008?
I'd assume that they would make them at the Dakota factory, completely, with no Toledo involvement. They don't make Compasses and Patriots at Toledo.

It does make sense - they can easily fit their 4x4 equipment to the Dakota and rework it to make it a true offroader. On the other hand I can say that they already have a Jeep pickup designed and waiting for factory capacity to build (the Scrambler); and Dakota's days are probably numbered and I don't see investing in that platform to be sensible.

Dakotas are not selling, and that's costing the company huge bucks. That's basically the rationale for believing this story. Dakotas are likely to be canned anyway - that's the rationale for not believing it! But making it look like a Jeep and giving it better off-road capabilities could give the Dakota a new lease on life. The average buyer cares more about looks and image than function anyway - whether they're getting a BMW, Land Rover, Hummer, Mercedes, or Jeep.

Re: Gladiator Pickup in early 2008?
I think the Dakota is failing to sell for many reasons, most of which are that it's a grampa truck. Dodge partially addressed this for '08 by restyling the nose, but it's still not that appealing. A truck based on the Dakota frame with Wrangler styling and off-road capability would sell. I bought a new light truck this year. I looked at all 5 brands - Dodge Dakota, Ford Ranger, GM Colorado/Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma. I immediately ruled out the Ford because it's tiny. The GM was next to be dismissed because it's underpowered and has the worst turning radius in the class, despite being smaller than all the others, Ranger aside. I thought a good bit about the Dodge, but the 05+ model is just so fugly. And they added 800 pounds to the vehicle with the redesign. So it's "only V8 in it's class" is horribly underpowered for the bloated truck. This left only the Japanese trucks. Both the Toyota and the Nissan are far more capable off-road from the factory than any of the domestics. I chose the Toyota over the Nissan. It was close between the two, but the Toyota is lighter, mostly because it has a plastic bed, and I like the styling inside & out better. The Toyota also sits a little higher than the Nissan. Let it be known that if the Gladiator was an option, I'd have one of those in my driveway instead of my Tacoma.

Oh, I know it doesn't have to have Toledo involvement (WKs and XKs aren't built in Toledo either and will continue to be built at Jefferson North until at least 2009 model year) but being that it would probably share 90% of it's interior components and the body panels from doors forward with the Wrangler it would sort of make sense that part of the work would be done in Toledo.

I wish Jeep would lets us know if this rumor is true... if it is I need to ask for a raise and start saving my pennies.
