The mainstream auto press is picking up a familiar image of the next-gen Wrangler

The mainstream auto press is just now picking up a familiar image of the next-generation Wrangler - well, it's familiar to readers of this site at least. Remember this article from about a month ago? Well AutosInsider.com from DetNews.com recently ran a short article with a similar photo - although their photo looks like it was taken from a still camera rather than grabbed off a frame of video. Here's what accompanied the photo:

A new addition to the Jeep family will be a four-door variant of the Wrangler when that model is redesigned in mid-2006.

The long-wheelbase Wrangler four-door will be considerably wider and longer than today's Wrangler, with exterior styling said to resemble that of the Jeep Gladiator concept truck unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show. Insiders say both Laredo and Rubicon trim levels will be offered.

The next-generation Wrangler will become upscale, with improved safety features and more content. Engine choices will include a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.7-liter V-6. Rumored for the four-door Wrangler only is an optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Jeep reportedly will offer buyers a choice of five-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions.

I am very excited about all I've heard about the Wrangler. The interesting thing is most places are saying that the Hemi will be an option. But, let'snot forget that there will be 2 Hemis in the future. I know that the one offered in the Wrangler will be the 5.7 but how incredible would it be if it were the 6.1 with 425hp. Wishful thinking I know but I can always hope.

I don't think they mean leather seating and rear-seat DVD players when they upscale. I think they mean a slight refinement in plastics, and the base model being less-stripped down.

I'd hate to see more than anything the Wrangler go upscale. One of the things that have always made Jeep great was that it was affordable 4wd for the masses. We got enough upscale yuppy Jeeps and wannabes out there as it is. I think the upcoming Commander, and the Grand Cherokee more than fits the upscale bill.

It's sounding like diesels will be put on hold until they can make them "clean" and be offered in every state. The rest of this story is old news.

Unless this is to be equipped with larger, say, 33-inch tires, it
looks to be quite the low-rider—six-inches of ground clearance,
maybe?

This would be a good diesel to have. Specs from the Grand Cherokee 3.0
D in the UK.

Maximum power of the 3.0
D engine is 218 hp DIN @ 4000 rpm and peak torque is 376 lb.ft. from just
1600 rpm. Top speed is 124 mph and 0-62 mph in 9.0 seconds

Wrangler prices are high due more to demand than cost-of-production.

Over the years, prices were raised consistently without affecting sales volumes. This is a testament to the reputation of the Wrangler in the minds of the average consumer. Just look at resale values for the Wrangler to understand demand.

If DCX wants to make the next-gen Wrangler with higher quality materials, so be it. They want to make sure Toyota does not undercut them with a rugged, heritage-inspired offroad vehicle of their own.........

Seeing as Chrysler is too cheap to put a map pocket on BOTH
front seatbacks on the flagship WK, don’t expect too much in
the way of refinement on the TK.

Hopefully no to "refined". As it stands now and TJ and a KJ are similarly priced after rebates. I wish the TJ were cheaper than it is, but at least this way you have their choice between "rugged" off-road TJ or "refined" off-road KJ. Like someone said, with the KJ, Grand, and Commander, I hope they don't over-refine the TJ. If the TJ gets to refined and drives up the price, they'd be abandoning a part of the market. That's actually the reason why I wouldn't expect too much in the way or refinement, updates probably is a better term.

This picture is pretty ridiculous.....obviously a current TJ body on top of some unknown frame.....I wouldn't think it means much

and have only good things to say about it

My "Wrangler Wish" is the Selec-Trac Option
(which I also had a version of on both)
I live in FL and regular 4wd isnt as practical

Same info I've been seeing. I wonder when they go on the complete phase out of the I-6? They'll probably wait for the redesign, but if they can find a way, it wouldn't surprise me if the put the 3.7 in the wrangler sooner. I don't have any problems with the 3.7 I have, but I know there are those that like the 4.0 and it is a good well proven engine.
