PatriotPatriot Scrapped?

In looking at the articles from Car Connection regarding the Detroit Auto show, there is a statement from Joe Eberhardt (Chrysler Group's executive vice president of global sales and marketing):

There was never an intention to build both the Jeep Compass and Patriot, it was an either/or exercise.

Of course, there is the comment....

The alternative was we could build both of them.

... sort of hints they might build it.

Now the article does not state they are not going to build the Patriot, but they also don't state they will. There has been some speculation that the Patriot might not get built after all. We'll have to wait and see...

"I also think that the Patriot still being off-road capable made the idea of the Compass a lot easier to swallow for many Jeep faithful."

Exactly! I was willing to forgive the too-car-like Compass if the Patriot was also produced. While it may have a fully indepenent suspension, the Patriot at least looks the part of a Jeep and was supposed to have a more robust 4wd system (I'm assuming a low-range t'case).

The pdf below, found on another board, would seem to back up your claim.

Look on page 25 for what appears to be a production-ready Patriot.

 Re: Patriot Scrapped?
I never understood where the Patriot fit in Jeep's thinking. It seems too close to the Liberty in concept and design. With Dodge getting a Liberty clone in the Nitro it is hard to believe that the Patriot will replace these two models.

Perhaps the Patriot will see the light of day if there is still plant capacity left after the initial surge from the Caliber / Compass run. Time will tell.

Perhaps it will be introduced (along with the 4-door Wrangler) at the New York Auto Show in April.

Wikipedia seems to think so:

 Re: Patriot Scrapped?
i don't get this. chrysler was supposed to release arround 10 vehivles this year.
1.compass
2.caliber
3.aspen
4.wrangler
5.4 door wrangler ?

there are still more vehicles to be released. producing the Patriot would make sence with the 2 product line theme one round and one square. one targeted more to women and one to men. the patriot would balence the compass out.

I think they counted the Commander in that and probably the Grand Cherokee SRT.
I've heard rumors that they are replacing the Liberty already, with the Patriot.

 2007 Wrangler
OK, I'm not really thrilled with the prospects of a new 3.8L V6 (minivan based) engine in the Wrangler. Most of us like the 4.0L I6 as is... but the new for '07-'08 4.0L V6 minivan engine with 255-275 hp and about 275 ft-lbs torque would be awesome... and they could still retain the 4.0L designation for nostalgia.... Do you think there's any chance of that? mark.hadden@delphi.com

 Re: 2007 Wrangler
A lot of us thought that the 4.0L would make its way into the Wrangler since it will be the engine for the Nitro (Possible the SRT6 version of it).

There is still some hope that the new 4.0L would make its way into the 4 door Wrangler.

We will see come the NY auto show.

 Re: Patriot Scrapped?
If you read a thread that Mike posted about the Liberty being the Number One selling Compact SUV you wouldn't say that they are getting rid of the Liberty.

No Exec in their right mind would do that. The Liberty is moving to a new platform come 2008. It will be called the KK.

 Re: Patriot Scrapped?
The Liberty is definitely NOT being scrapped!!!

As much as many people may not like it's looks, or the fact it has IFS, etc. the vehicle is a huge seller and is still the best off-roading vehicle in it's class. There was a recent article about how Jeep's ever increasing sales numbers will help DCX overtake its domestic rivals. The Liberty is a huge part of those sales numbers.

With its upcoming redesign the Liberty will receive many of the safety and traction systems seen on the Grand Cherokee and Commander. In addition the vehicles front suspension will most likely be strengthened, body stiffness will be increased, and a large focus will be put on fit and finish as well as the feel of interior plastics (the latter being something that Jeep has caught some flak for with the Grand Cherokee and Commander).

The Patriot has a couple of major differences compared to the Liberty.

1.) Fully independant suspension (not just IFS)
2.) A proposed sticker price of almost $10,000 lower than the average Liberty.

The second point is what would make it a big seller. The claims that the Patriot would get a Trail Rated badge got a lot of people excited with the idea of a cheap vehicle that could have some fun on the trails (albeit not serious rock-climbing) and would be a fuel efficient daily driver.

I also think that the Patriot still being off-road capable made the idea of the Compass a lot easier to swallow for many Jeep faithful.
