here is my comment: the reference of YK for the platform of the Jeep Commander is wrong. The official DC name is XK. I am a DC supplier with parts on this platform and should know.

Yeah, I'm sure the Crosslander will be a big hit (sarcasm). Is it functional, yes, but with no dealer network, the average consumer will never consider it and hence very limited availability. How about a hardcore Jeeper? Probably not because their are no companies to modify these things. Also if one thinks Jeeps and Land Rovers are unreliable, I'm sure the Romanians are mastetful engineers.....hahaha. Maybe Land Rover should sue over this bastardization of the Defender 110. I now pray hard for a Dakar type Wrangler.

According to someone that has seen it, the new Commander looks like a supersized Cherokee. It has the same profile as the Cherokee, only larger. Expect the seven slot grill and round headlamps.

First off, congrads on the new Unlimited. Second, all Jeep are extemely capable offroad. True, IFS does not articulate like SFA, but it will get you to 99% of the places you need or want to go. No other manufacture makes a group of SUVs this capable. Third, my concern is not for DCX; companies want to make as much money as possible. If Jeep sold more Wranglers, more vehicles like the Wrangler would exist. The goal is remain competitive, and DCX sees other manufacturers selling lots of full-size utes. I am by no means a fan of DCX. Why would a company like Jeep, known exclusively for SUVs, not get into this market? Obviously, it seems late into the game, but if they build a vehicle of quality, capability, and good looks, no one will care of its tardiness. Fourth, where is elsewhere. All other companies already build these homogenized SUVs: Tahoe/Yukon/Subarban/H2/Silverado/Sierra, Trailblazer/Envoy/Rainer/Saab SUV, Explorer/Mountaineer/Aviator, Canyon/Colorado/H3, Toureg/Cayenne/Audi Q7, Armada/QX56; Or have IFS and/or IRS: 4Runner, Pathfinder, Xterra, LR3, Range Rover, all the crossover utes, and all previously listed. That leaves the Wrangler and the Land Cruiser/ LX470 as SFA and SRA. The future will see IFS and IRS on the Land Cruiser, while the Wrangler is still to be determined.
I agree Jeep should not water down its vehicles, and I feel it has not. For each segment it competes in, Jeep makes the most capable offering. As chessy as the trail rated ad/ marketing campaign is, it does show that while Jeep may expand to build less capable vehicles, it will never stray from build offrod ready vehicles completely.
My hope is that the Commander will maintain dimensions closer to the Rescue concept, especially with regards to front and rear overhang. While I dislike large SUVs, it does offer Jeep the opportunity to go head to head with Land Cruiser and Land Rover, and at the same time make loads of money so future risks with solid axles vehicles can be made (as related to the general consumer).

I hate the Liberty, am indifferent towards the Grand Cherokee, and will not be in the market for the Commander when and if it ever appears in the showroom. I do use my Jeeps for their utility, and I do take them off-road regularly.

Will I ever buy another new Jeep? Just did: I have a sparkling new Unlimited that I just added to the collection. I'll buy more if they continue to produce halo vehicles that spark my interest. If they homogenize the entire line to the point where DCX is simply offering a re-badged Dodge then I'll take my business elsewhere.

I'm not particularly interested in whether DCX remains in business or not. It's a simple matter of whether they offer a product that meets my needs. I don't quite understand enthusiasts if all they're enthusiastic about is sales numbers. My interest is solely based off of a long line of capable, utilitarian vehicles. I don't care if they build a hundred lines of poseur-mobiles, as long as something like the Wrangler is still offered. That's not whining.

I believe 60% of XJ owners on HERE would never buy a KJ. Yes Jeep did loose some customers with the death of the XJ but remember, those that want what you and I want in a 4x4 represent about 1-2% of the purchases. Thus they lost 1-2% of the market and gain allot more with a more refined Jeep. I would be willing to bet that almost 75% of people buying a Jeep don't even know the difference between IFS or SFA, maybe only 5-10% know the difference off road and only probably 1-2% what actually use those advantages. You don't become a successful business buy catering to 1-2% of your customers.

The KJ, WK, and new Commander are designed to compete with the other SUVs in the market. Most people want plush riding luxurious SUVs. Those that want ones that are capable of being hardcore trail rigs represent 1-2% of consumers, if even that. If you want one of them they still have the Wrangler and hopefully, we will see a 4 door variant with the redesign.

If jeep decides to totally abandon the market that the
current wrangler and now gone XJ serve, then
somebody will step in with a rugged, fairly inexpensive
solid axle 4X4 to serve that market. Jeep has alienated
a large market that it created with the XJ. I've never
seen this pole taken on this site, but I would bet that
more than 60% of XJ owners would not purchase any
other jeep models (except the unlimited). If jeep does
not offer a replacement then someone else might.
Who? Look at www.crosslander.com for an example.
Here is a vehicle that would never have had a chance if
the XJ were still around or if the Dakar had been built.
But right now with neither from jeep, it looks real good
to me.

So clearly you will not be purchasing one, or any new Jeep, so your opinion will not matter to DCX. It's only a spy shot, so relax. This is a popular market and Jeep does want to make money. Everyone on MTFJN knows your opinion of IFS and the new Jeeps, so please spare us the repetive whining.
Did you just purchase your two Jeeps yesterday? Only $700 worth of maintance on two Jeep? My WJ required that much in 2004. Do they work, or are they broken down on your front lawn?
