There's a lot of you who have been talking about diesel jeeps, so I thought I'd post this update to the previous story about a possible Mopar-branded Diesel engine that can be (relatively) easily swapped into later model Jeeps.
JPMagazine blogs have an update:
It's basically the same 2.8L VM Motori engine offered in the JK Wrangler overseas. Because of its industrial background (it's also used in overseas equipment) it should be easily swapped into older Jeeps. In fact, only a thin adapter plate is needed to install it behind any of the later 4.0L Jeep transmissions.
There's also a photo over at AEV's site.

![]() Diesel would have to be priced at nearly $5.80 to just break even with gasoline in 'Miles per dollar' comparason, assuming a 15 m.p.g. gas vehicle(4.28 mi/$) v.s a 25 m.p.g. diesel (5.8 mi/$).
And Diesel provides bettere low-end torque. Right now, Diesel prices are high because of the winter-to-summer changeover, but they will drop back down to about 10-15 cents over premium soon. What Chrysler needs to do is get the word out about the truth of diesel fuel. The new engines and fuel burn cleaner than some gas engines, and get much better mileage. I was a doubter too until I saw a friend get 18 m.p.g. in a 7.4L Diesel Excursion. |
